THREAD CUTTER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 20. 1909. r

INVENTOR Attorney Patnted ug. 31, 1909.
' UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE. v
JOHN W. KLEMNLOF MENA, ARKANSKS, ASSIGNOR OF OIIIE-HALF 'IO GUTHBERT J. CLEBQBNE, F NORFOLK, VIRGINIA. I
THREAD-CUTTER.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. KLEMM, citizen of the United States, residing at Mena,
' in the county of Polk and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Thread-Cutters, of whichv specification, Figure 1 is a perspective Viewof a spool provided with my 1mprovedthread cutter. Fig. 2 is a plan View in perspective, of my improved thread cutter, re-
moved. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of a portion of a spool and through the thread cutter located therein. Fig. 4a is a bottom plan view of my improved thread cutter removed, and, Fig. 5 is a top plan -v1ew thereof.
In accordance with my invention, I provide one of the end sur aces. of a spool A, holding cotton, Sllk, or other thread, .with'a V-shape slot 5, tapermg inwardly from its peripheral edge, and provided with undcrout side edges 6. I may alsoprovide the eiroular edge of the respective end of the spool with a relatively small notch 7, at the center of slot 5.
The cutter comprises a V-sha-pe plate 8 having taperingside edges 9, constructed in the same degree as the under-cut edges of slot 5, to interfit therewith, said tapering edges being provided with roughened surfaces whereby to positively engage with the side edges of said slot.and prevent dislodgment of the plate. The cutter plate 8 is further provided with a V-sha e slot tapering inwardly from its .outer utt end and also provided with under-cut edges'll, pro:
viding cutting edges 12 at the upper surface of the plate, thesaid under-cut edges 11 having a taperv substantially etplal to and rendering the same substantia 1y parallel with the outer tapering edges 6 of the plate 8 as will be seen by reference to Fig. 3.
A Thus, I provide a thread cutter which may Specification-of Letters Patent. Application filed Mayt20, 1909. Serial No. 497,269.
be manufactured and inserted in connection with a spool of'thread at a verysmall cost, and which will greatly enhance the market valueof, and createa great demand for the particular spools with which it is used.
It will be noted that the top andend surfaces of the cutting plate, when inserted as described, within the spool slot, extend flush with the respective surfaces of the spool, and that the edges of the plate at theouter ends of its slot 10, are rounded, bOIll ofwhich facts tend to. preventthe fingers from being cut in handling the spool.
Hav'ing fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a spool having a V-shape slot inone of its end surfaces, and
tapering inwardly from its respective pe ripheral edge and having under-cut side edges, of'acutter plate for insertion within Patented Aa 31, 1909.
said slot, of V-shape provided with beveled edges to engage the under-cut edges of the slot, and also provided with a V-shape slot tapering inwardly from its butt end, and provided with under-cut edges whereby to form cutting edges at the upper surface of the plate, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a spool, provided with a V-shape slot in one of its end surfaces, tapering inwardly from its respective peripheral edge, and having under-cut side edges, a cutter plate for insertion within said slot, of V-shapeJ provided with tapering side edges having roughened surfaces to positively engage the said under-cut edges of said slot, and prevent dislodgment of the plate, said plate beii'ig further provided with a central V-shaped cut out portion tapering inwardly from its butt, end, and provided with under-cut edges whereby to form cut-.-
ting edges at the upper surface of the plate,
JOHN KLEMM.
