SHELL. APPLICATION FILED AUG. zu, 1907. 'j
and embedded in the paper base or, in. the
particular form of shell shown, in what is Called'wound wad 3 v By this construction it will be `seen that `5 the primer cup rests on the bottom ornearly. fso of the battery cup with which it is forced into contact as described, and the anvil 6"" being firmly and centrally set as contradisf tnguished frointhe ordinary form of sepa- 10 rate anvil, the tiring of the primer is ren# -dered more certain and effective. It will v also be seen that this construction is much more economical bothY inthe original cost of producing the parts,` since one less part is re quired tlianforinerly, and also the cost of `assembling and handling the parts is less than, the old form of construction of battery cup and separate' anvil. The double vent in the bottom of the battery cup is also an im provemcut over the central vent necessitated by the ordinary .form of battery Vprimer in which it was necessary to provide-means for securing the base of theanvil at the bottom of thc battery cup.
but
That I claim is: i. 'fin a shell, a battery primer embodying a primer-cup and a battery cup, the said bat tery cup having bottom portions thereof -foreed into the interior thereof to constitute an anvil with a'pointed apex vand angulaisupporting'sides.
2. In a shell a battery primer embodying Ia primer cup, and a battery cup', the said battery cup having its bottom forced into the interior thereof to forma pointed an vil with the base thereof extending V,across 4the cup, and having portions of the said i11- wardly projecting bottom cut away to pro- ;vide double vents.
3. In' a shell a'battery primer embodying battery cup having its bottom` forced into the interior of the cup to form a pointed anvil,"and having a portion of the said bottom cut away to provide a vent, the base of the anvil extending transversely of the cup. v 4f. In a shell a battery primer embodying api-imei' cup, and a battery cup adapted toA receive the primer cup, and having its bottorn forced into the interior thereof to pro,- vide an anvil extending across the cup and adapted to enter theinterior' ofthe primer cu Ina-shell' avbattery primer embodying a primer cupland a battery cup',4 and an anvil formeduntegrally'therewith and extending across the bottom of the cup to form a convenientopeningin the bottom on each side'of the anvil. y
In order that the invention might be fully understood, the details of. an embodimentV thereof have been thus specifically described;`
a. primer cup, and 'a battery cup, the saidy 'ing the perforated ,y l
having its' other ,end crimped or upset into. gas .tight ,connection with'the base of the Arii der embodying seance of saidfbattery cup, andan inciosing hood,
the said hood passing through the reinforcing wound wad and havinor its forward edge rmly upset into said wat'.
8. In a shotgun shell including a paper tube and a cup 4of ductile material, :ininterior Wad or reinforcement having an opening therethrough, in. combination with a battery cup primer comprising a primer' cup and a battery cup, there being an anvil formed integrally with said battery cup, and an imperforate hood inclosing the said battery cup primer at one end, and having its other end crimped into gas tight conocen 'tion with the said interior wad or reinforcement.
9. In a central tire shotgun shell. .for nitro powders, the combination with a paper tube Joined to a base of ductile material perfo rated at its center, having the edge sur lrounding said perforation depressed, inA
combination with a battery primer embodying ay primer cup and a battery cup, the said battery cup having an anvil formed integrally therewith, and a flaring hood inclos lng the outer end and sides of said battery primer and itself supported on the depressed edge surrounding Vthe `perforated center of the base and having its other end crimped or upset into gas tight connection with the base of the'shell. i
l0. In' a shotgun shell, the combination' with a paper tube joined to a base of-ductile material perforated at itscenter, having the edge surrounding said perforation depressed, of a battery primer embodying a primer cup and a battery cup, the said battery cup having an anvil formed integrally therewith,
and a flaring hood inclosing the outer end and sides of said batteryl primer and itself supported on the depressed edve surroundcenter 4of die base vand shell, there being a iiange. formed around the bottom ofthe said Haring hood adapted' to coperate with the depressed edge sur. roundi the perforated center of the ba-se., ,y 11.,Tecmbination in a shell or battery' a'primer cuppof a batrug portions of its fi d o its interior-finto anguiar uelation so 'that they join to form an anvil which has an apex and inclined' supporting sides.- y e 12. The combination in a shell orV battery primer embodying a primer cup, of abattery eiip having a. strip` of material integral' therewith extended upwardly and within the 'dup toa point-` or apex in proper -'rela-tion to torni an anvil. 1e
13. The 'combination in a shell or 'battery pri-nier embodying a` primer vcup,- of a bat-- te'i'jy cnphaving a stripof. its material extended upwardly-into the interior of suoli cup to a'point or apex in-position to forni an anvil'land provided with apertureso1i-eaoli side -of such apex.
1l. The combination inashell or' battery primer embodying a primer c'up,' of' a bat.-
- tery lcupuhaving a. narrow strip otits mate- -an integra-l bridge of materia rial, extendedupwardly .from its bottoni intov the interior of the cup to forma-point or apex in position to aetas `an anvil and ent.
away at each -side of suc'hapex to provide openingsl ti-erethrough.
'15'. In a shell or battery primer, the 'coin-` an anyil' formed integrally with the battery cup by having'the bottom thereof formed to projectinto its interior whereby. the center of the proj eating bottom comprises the point orape'x lof the anvilandbeing supported by I an integral bridge oi'niaterial spanning the bottom edge of the battery cup.
16.: In" a vshell Orbat-tery primer, the c inbiiiat-ion of a primer cup, a battery cup, and an an'vilfornied integrally with thev battery' cup by having the bottoni thereof v-Joi'med to project iiitoits interior wherebytlie center of theproje'cti'ng'bottom comprises-the point or apex oft-he anvil and being su'pported'by an integral bridge of material spanning the "betton'i' edge 'of the batt-ery cup; between diainetrically opposed points therein.. v i 17 -In'a'shell or battery "primer, the coinbinatio'n'ofa primer opp, a battery cup, and
an vanvil formed integrally withthe battery cnpby havingthebottoni' thereof formed to Y project'into its-interior whereby'the center ofthe projecting bottom comprises the point or -apex of the anvilV andbeing supported by spanning the of the pro] "portions o bottQ'I'l ied-gelof the battery eu'p,'.there being a-pbrt'ionof the said inwardly proj eating botl torn-remote'from the pointer a'l'iex of the 'anvil cut, away to'provide'a vent.
