UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEVEN HAYDU, OF GANAANVILLE, OHIO.
ROCKING-CHAIR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEVEN HAYDU, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Canaanville, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking- Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rocking chairs and the object of my invention is to provide a chair that can be easily folded into a compact parcel, whereby the chair can be easily carried and will occupy a comparatively small space.
Another object of the invention is to provide a folding rocking chair that can be safely used, and I have designed my chair for porch use, whereby after the chair is used in the summer time it can be folded and stored away in the winter time, without occupying a large space. The chair can also be used for camping purposes or upon such trips where chairs are carried.
The above objects are obtained by providing a rocking chair having a folding seat, rockers, and arms, and the detailed construction entering into the chair will be pres ently described and claimed.
I11 the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the chair, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a chair when folded, Fig. 4 is an end view of the chair folded, Fig. 5 is a bottom plate of the chair, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the chair folded.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the back of the chair and the lower edge of this back is provided with a depend ing extension 2 having an enlarged end 3 to which cables or cords 4 and 5 are attached.
Hinged to the back 1, as at 6, is a seat 7 having the side edges thereof provided with depending members 8 for pivoted arm-rest supports 9. Hinged, as at 10 to the upper ends of the supports are arm rests 11, and these arm-rests are pivotally connected to bearings 12 provided therefor at the rear side edges of the back 1.
Hinged to the bottom side edges of the seat 7, as at 13, are chair legs 14 having rockers 15. The legs 14 and the rockers 15 are adapted to fold inwardly, and for nor mally maintaining said legs at right angles to the seat 7 I arrange a coil spring 16 ad jacent to each leg, each spring having one Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 14, 1909.

end fixed to the leg, as at 17, while the opposite end is fixed to the bottom of the seat 7, as at 18.
The bottom of the seat 7, adjacent to the front edges thereof is provided with a depending bracket 19, and journaled in said bracket are sheaves 20. The seat 7 is provided with depending eyelets 21 directly in the rear of the bracket 19, and the rockers 15 adjacent to the rear legs 14 are provided with eyelets 22.
The cables 4 and 5 extend forwardly from the extension 2 and under the sheaves 20, then rearwardly through the eyelets 21, and are attached to the eyelets 22 of the rockers 15.
The bearings 12 of the back 1 are provided with hooks 28, adapted to engage outwardly projecting pins 24, carried by the side edges of the seat 7.
The tension of the springs 16 normally holds the legs 14 and the rockers 15 in operable relation to the seat 7, whereby the chair can be safely used for rocking purposes.
To fold. the chair, the outer edge of the seat 7 is gripped in one hand and the upper edge of the back 1 in the other hand. These edges are then swung toward each other, until the seat 7 is parallel with the back 1. This movement of the seat 7 swings the armrest supports 9 forwardly, until the armrest-supports 9 and the arm-rests 11 are approximately parallel. The same movement of the seat 7, through the medium of the cables or cords 4 and 5 draws the legs 14 and the rockers 15 inwardly, with one rocker overlapping the other and the springs 16 under tension.
In order that one rocker will move slightly in advance of the other, one of the eyelets 22 is located in closer proximity to one of the rear legs 14 than the other eyelet 22, whereby the cable or cord 4 will be slightly shorter than the cable or cord 5, consequently, the movement of the rocker controlled by the cable 4 will be in advance of the movement of the rocker controlled by the cable 5.
After the chair'has been folded, the hooks 23 are placed in engagement with the pins 24 to prevent the rocker from opening or assuming its natural position.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, is
1. A folding rocking chair, embodying a back, a depending extension carried there- Patented Aug. 24, 1909.
by, a seat hinged to the lower edge of said back, arm-rest supports pivotally connected to the side edges of said seat," arm rests piv-- otally connected to the side edges of said back and hinged to the upper ends of's'aid arm rest supports, for permitting of said sea'tbeing folded against said back, legs hinged to the bottom side edges of said seat, springs connected with said seat and with said legsfor normally maintaining said legs at right angles to said seat, rockers carried by said legs, sheaves revolubly supported by the underside of said seat, depending eyelets carried by said seat, eyelets carried by said rockers, and cables connected with the depending extension of said back and extending over said sheaves and through the eyelets of said seat and connecting with the eyelets of said rockers for swingingsaid rockers and said legs inwardly, one in advance of the other when said seat is folded toward said back.
2. Afoldingrocking chair, comprising a backhaving a depending extension, a seat hinged to the lower edge of said back, spring pressed legs hinged to the lower side edges of said-seat, rockers carried by said'legs, revoluble shafts supported by said seat, depending eyelets carried by said seat, eyelets carried by. said rockers, cables connected with the extension of said back and passing over said sheaves and through'the eyelets ofsaidseat and connecting with the eyelets of said rockers for swinging said rockers inwardly, one in advance of the other when said seat is folded toward'said'baok, and means carried by said back for engaging said seat to hold said chair in a folded position.
3. A folding rocking chair, comprising a back having a depending extension, a seat hinged to the lower edge of said back, spring pressed legs hinged to the lower side edges of said seat, rockers carried by said le s, revoluble shafts supported by said seat, epending eyelets carried by said seat, eyelets carried by said rockers, and cables connecting with the extension of said back and passing over said sheaves and through the eyelets of said seat and connected with the eyelets of said rockers for swinging said rockers inwardly, one in advance of the other when said seat is folded toward the back.
4. A folding chair comprising a backhaving a, depending extension a seat hinged to the lower edge of said back, legs hinged to said seat and adapted to fold thereon, rockers carried by said legs, and cables connected with said depending extension and with said rockers and loosely connected with the botton of said seat for swinging said rockers andlegs inwardly when said seat is moved toward said back. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
STEVEN HAYDU.
