LOUIS NUSSBAUM, SR., OF NEW IBERIA, LOUISIANA.
SOAP-HOLDER FOR WASHBOARDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led May 22, 1909. Serial No. 497,757.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs NUssBAUM, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New Iberia, in the parish of Iberia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Soap- Holders for lVashboards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in soap holding attachments for washboards, whereby the soap is adjustably held in position substantially in alinement with the corrugated surface of the washboard so that the material being washed may be rubbed against the face of the soap without applying it directly by hand.
lVhile the invention is not restricted to the exact details shown and described, still for the purpose of disclosure reference is had to the accompanying drawings illustrating a practical embodiment of the invention, and in which drawings like characters designate the same parts in the several views, of which- Figure l is a perspective fragmentary view of a washboard with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section passing through the opening in the washboard. Fig. 3 is a similar view in longitudinal section, and F ig. 4 is a plan view of the slide.
l designates the corrugated surface of a washboard, the board itself being of the usual construction, with the exception that at the upper end a pocket is provided for the reception of a cake of soap. This pocket consists of a box-like construction having a lower wall 2, and side walls t braced by the rear member 3, sunk flush with the rear edges of the side walls. The side walls are provided with a plurality of longitudinal grooves 5 adapted to receive the longitudinal edges of a slide 6. This slide, which is an adjustable bottom for the box, consists of a rectangular member of suitable thickness cut away at its longitudinal edges, as at 7, to form the tongue 8 fitting in the grooves 5, and the object of providing the -slide in this form is to enable the same to be inserted in reversed positions to adjust the height of the soap 9, independent of the movement of the slide from one set of slots to another. The slide may be cut away at one or both corners, as indicated at l0, and the cut away corners will provide means for draining the box.
F rom the foregoing the operation of the device is clearly apparent, but might be briefly stated as follows z-TVVhen the slide 6 is seated in the lower slots, with the bottom portion CfL of the slide directed downwardly, a cake of soap of proper size may be dropped in the box through the front, and the top of the cake of soap will lie substantially flush with the top of the box-like opening or corrugated surface of the board and without any rods or other retaining means crossing the rubbing surface of the soap. Tf it is desired to raise the soap a little higher, the slide G may be placed in its reversed position with the face 6a disposed upwardly, when the top surface of the soap will be slightly elevated, and this operation may be repeated with respect to the upper sets of slots until the cake has been finally worn away.
T am aware of the fact that there are devices designed toaccomplish substantially the same end, consisting of varied arrangements of spring members pressing against the bottom of the cake of soap and forcing it upwardly against retaining bars disposed along the corrugated surface of the board, but l do not claim this idea broadly.
YV hat I do claim is l. A soap receptacle comprising a box, a slide mounted therein adapted to seat a cake of soap, said slide being provided with a raised portion allowing same to be reversed and slightly elevating the cake of soap, and means cooperating between said slide and box to adjustably support said slide in its normal or reversed position at different heights within said box, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a washboard provided with an opening adjacent the scrubbing surface, and walls depending from said opening and forming a box-like frame, said side walls being` provided with a plurality of registering internal slots, and a slide disposed in said box and provided with longitudinal tongues adapted to operate in said walls and providing an adjustable support for a cake of soap, substantially as described.
Tn testimony whereof, T aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
