COVER FOR TOBACCO-PIPES.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Aug. 24:, 1909.
. Application filed April 24, 1909. Serial No. 492,082.
My improvements relate to tobacco pipe covers, and are designed to render a tobacco 'pipeoperative and adapted for use under excessive external air ressure, as in strong winds, .or while traveling at a relatively high rate of speed in motor vehicles 850.
--The invention consists in the construction and. arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed specifically, distinguishing features being the useof intersticed plates with. a space betweenthem, a filling of permeable non-combustible material between said. intersticed plates, and a coal over said intersticed plates, in combination with means for holding the cover iii-position on the. pipe, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1,
is a to viev. of a pipe provided with my improve cover; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof Fig. 3, a similar view partly in section; Fig. 4, a sectional view showing the cover raised; Fig. 5, a section upon plane of line 5-5 Fig. 3; Fig-6, is a section upon lane of line 6,6 Fig. 1; 'Fig. 7, is a front, tlit Fig. 8, a rear elevation of the cover.
Primarily, and. in its simplest form, the cover consists of the inteisticed plates 7), 19,
attached together by means which create a space 8, between them. I prefer however, to fill this space with a permeable non-combustible material m, such as asbestos wool, sponge or any other suitable substance of sufficient porosity to admit ofthe passage of air. I also prefer toprovide the intersticcd plates 7), p, with a cowl 0, completely covering and isolating them, the air being admitted to the cowl through the annular space 0, between its lower edge and the body of the pipe,--the cowl 0, being attached to the plates by means of radial brackets b.
Obviousl various means of holding the cover in place upon the pipe may be rea pipe may be used position on the pipe sorted to without departing from thespirit and intent of my invention, and I do not therefore restrict myself to the means shownin the drawings by way of. illustration, in which the cover is hinged at a, to an annular band A, fitting snugly over the exterior of the pipe and held thereon by frictional contact so as to be removable if desired or being positively attached to the exterior of the pipe bowl as may be found most expedient in manufacture and use.
a, is anindentation or offset in thenietal of which the cowl is composed, which serves by its elasticity to pinch against the band A, and thereby hold the cover in its closed position over the bowl of the pipe.
Constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described, my ipe cover effectually excludes any excess 0' air, even when the external pressure is excessive, since the air is only admitted through the comparatively annular narrow space 0, to
the cowl, and from thence has to pass through the intersticed plates p, p, which afford additional resistance to the air pressure, especially when the space 8, between them 'has a ling of permeable incombustible material as hereinbeiore set forth.
Thus equipped with my improved cover, with convenience and comfort even when traveling at high rates of speed in motor vehicles or in other situations where the user is exposed to excessive wind pressure.
Whatl claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 13,
The combination with a tobacco pipe of a .cover fitting over the mouth thereof, and
consisting of intersticed plates, a filling of permeable non combustible material between. said plates, a cowl inclosing said parts, sai'd cowl being constructed to admit air only at its edgeswhen in position upon the pipe, and means for holding the cover in for the purpose of preventing internal excess of air pressure, substantially as set forth.
