DANTES R. REEFE, F JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
SANIT ARY CUSPIDOR.
fo all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAN'rEs R. REEFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county ot' Duval and ttate of Florida7 have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sanitary Cuspidors, of which the following is a speci'cation.
This invention relates to cuspidor-s especially adapted to be used in large buildings and railroad cars, the object being to provide a cuspidor with a pair of spring actuated covers for closing' the same when not in use so that all danger ot any odor escaping' from the cuspidor is prevented.
Another object of my invention is to provide very novel means for actuating' the sliding covers so that they can be easily and quickly operated with the foot.
A further object of the invention is to provide very novel means for locking' the covers into open position so that the cuspidor can be used.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cuspidor which is exceedingly ehea and simple in construction and one whici is adapted tobe placed in an opening lormed in the floor ot a building' or car so that it will be out of the way.
lVith these various objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction and arrangementot parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specicationz-Figure l is a side elevation of my improved cuspidor' showing the application of the same. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. slis a det-ail plan view of the top of the cuspidor showing the slot, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the operating' bar and guide rail.
In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a U-shaped trame A adapted to be arranged within an opening formed in the toor and which is provided with a central opening' A in which is secured a funnel shaped cuspidor B to which is connected a drain pipe C which is adapted to be connected to a sewer pipe. Secured on the trame A flush with the side edges are strips D on which is secured a plate E the edges of which extend outwardly beyond the same and are provided with openings through which screws E are adapted to pass for securing it on the loor. The plate is provided Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 4, 1908.
Serial No. 446,884.
with a central opening E* in vertical alinement with the cuspidor under which on the frame is mounted a pair of plates F F forming a cover for the cuspidor which are provided with outwardly extending eyes Gr adjacent their ends which are connected together by coil springs Il for normally holding the plates together so as to completely close the cuspidor. Secured to the outer ends of the plates F and F are the ends of a chain I which pass over pulleys J', J arranged on top of the trame A and over pulleys K and K arranged on the side ot the frame, the pulley K being arranged centrally of the frame.
The plate IQ is provided with a slot over the pulley IC having an offset portion E at one end in which is adapted to lit an operating bar L which is slidably mounted in the slot tor locking' the same, the bar being connected to the chain as shown at L and is provided with a slot L2 in which works a guide rail M secured to the side of the trame tor guiding the operating bar when moved and it will be seen that by pressing on the knob L secured to the upper end of the bar L the plates forming the cover will be drawn apart and by simply forcing' the bar into the oliset portion Il the plates will be locked into an open position so that the cuspidor can be used and after it has been used it is only necessary to torce the bar out of the olt'set portion and the springs will return the plates so as to close the cuspidor. The slot in the operating bar is of such a size that there will be allowed considerable lateral movement ot' the bar on the rail so as to allow the bar to be pushed into the oii'set portion and it will be seen that by this arrangement the sliding covers can be easily and quickly opened and closed by the foot.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a cuspidor which is thoroughly sanitary and one which will be out of the way thereby saving a great deal of trouble and time.
Iihat I claim is:h
In a cuspidor of the kind described, the combination with a trame, of a cuspidor carried by the traine provided with a drain pipe, strips carried by the trame, a plate carried by the strips provided with an opening' in vertical alinement with the cuspidor', said plate being provided with a slot having offset portion, a pair of cover plates con- Patented Aug. 24, 1909.
neeted together by coil springs mounted on the frame over the euspidor, pulleys mounted on the ends of the frame, a chain Working over said pulleys having its ends connected to said plates, a guide rail secured to the franieunder the slot, an operating bar e011- neeted to the cha-in provided with a slot working over said guide rail, and extending Vitnesses:
