MORSE TELEGBAPHIG APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Aug. 24, 1909.
Application filed August 28, 1905. Serial No. 276,157.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIOVANNI BoGNI', a subjectof the King of Italy, residing at 39 Via Venti Settembre, Sesto Calende, Lombardy, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Morse Telegraphic Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide apparatus whereby the two elementary signs of the Morse alphabet (dash and dot) may be replaced by a combination of dashes and dots, which in their most simple form allow of five different elementary signs being used, namely:
\Vhile the use of said five elementary signs allows oi the ordinary telegraphic correspondence being carried out in a substantially much simpler and quicker manner than it is possible by means of only two elementary signs, the new elementary signs are evidently capable of forming a very Wide number of combinations, which admit of a telegraphic code being drawn up that is itself simpler and more efiicient than those based on the ordinary Morse alphabet.
In the accompanying drawings, which are given by way of example only, Figures 1 and 2 represent a Morse transmitter and Figs. 3 and la Morse receiver as modified in order to adapt them for the use of my improved alphabct. They dificr from the apparatus as now in use in as far as the transmitter is provided with a second key 7?, (Figs. 1 and 2).

On depressing key 6 (Fig. 1) only a part of the battery I) is actuated, the current generated is only suflicient to draw down the armature 8 of the electromagnet M, and the usual dashes and dots are obtained. It on the contrary the key t, be depressed, the whole battery Z) is put in action and the current energizes electromagnet M besides electron'iagnet M and therefore draws down not only armature s, but also armature In this case the double signs are obtained. Morses apparatus modified as above described is, as already told, available for using the ordinary Morses alphabetif de sired, and so Morses apparatus modified according to my invention may be used in connection with ordinary Morse apparatus.
Having now described my invention and how the same is to be carried out, what I desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a telegraphic apparatus, the combination with the receiving armatures and electro-magnets for operating the same; of a battery composed of sections; a plurality of transmitting keys separately connected with different sections or said battery whereby a larger or smaller number of the elements of said battery may be introduced into the telegraphic circuit to energize difierent electro-magnets; and means interacting between the receiving armatures whereby the armature actuated by a key which introduces more than one of the sections of said battery, will impartmovement to its adjacent armature operable by a less number of sections of said battery.
2. In a telegraphic apparatus, the combination with a pair of receiving armaturcs adj acently arranged, electro-magnets tor opcrating the same and a battery of elements, one of said elcctroanagncts being made c'l festive by a portion of said battery while the other electro-magnct requires the entire battery to make it etl'ective; of a pair of transmitting keys adjacently arranged, one of said keys being connected up to introduce only that portion of the battery which energizes the first magnet, and the other key be: ing connected up to introduce the entire battery to energize the second magnet; and means connected with the receiving armature which is actuated only by the entire battery, whereby the motion of said arn'iature is transmitted to the armature which is actuated by a portion only of the battery.
3. In a telegraphic apparatus, the combination of a plurality of transmitting keys, a plurality of electro-magnetically operated sion of the other of said keys, tw'o electro- 15 magnets which are respectively energized by the depression of said transmitting keys,
receiving armatures, means for operating two recording armatures each of which are each one of the receiving armatures by depressing one of the transi'nitting keys and means for transmitting the movement from one receiving armature to another.
4. In a telegraphic apparatus, the combination of two transmitting keys a battery, means 'by which only a portion of said battery is thrown into action by the depression of one ofsaid keys, means whereby the entire battery is thrown into action by the depresactuated by one of said electro-magnets, and a lug upon one recording armature in Virtue of which the movement thereof is transmitted to the other recording armature.
