To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLIS S. 0L1 ER, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Newarlgin the county of Essex andState of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sound-Modifying Means for Talking-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to 'be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enalgle others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to. characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification;
This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in talking machines and similar sound-reproducing machines, such as the graphophone and the phonograph; and, the present invention relates more particularly to a novel means for use with the usual sound-conveying niemher leading to the reproducing horn, said means being for the purposes of modifying the sounds and by means of the niechanisinvarying to any desired extent the degree of the reproduced sounds.
This invention therefore has for its principal object to providea simply constructed and efficiently operating sound-modifying me ans for use. with the sound-conveying tube or member of the various forms of talkina machines, which is under perfect control or the operator and can be most easily worked, so that the sounds can he reproduced with nodifiedetlects, and especially is this so ith the reproduction of niusicalsounds, as the singing of a person, or a piece played upon a musical instrument or instruments, the pianissimo and forte el'l'rcts being most por fectly reproduced.
Other objects of this invention not at'this time more particularly enumeratedfwill be I clearly understood from the follon' inp ertailed description of my present invention.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of said sound-conveying tube or member, shown partly in plan and partly in horizontal section, with an end-portion of the soundn1odi tying means hown in top view, horizontal sectional representation of the jointed elements of said sound-conveying tube or mernlier, with the sound-mmlifying means shown in plan within the joint of said elements; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section. made on an enlarged scale, of said jointed elements, and of the sound-modifying means arranged in said joint, showing one general arrangement of the parts comprising said sound-modifying means. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5- 5 in said Fig. 4, out made on a still larger scale, said section showing the sound-modifying means in its wide-open position within the jointed ele ments of the sound-conveying tube or memher; and Figs. 6 and 7 are similar sectional representations of the same parts, but show in; the sound-modifying means in two of its other positionsfor modifying the sound.

In combination with a sound-corrrey ing tube oi a talking machine, a tubular sound-inodifying means within said tube which is longitudinally divided, so as to provide a longitudinally extending open part, and a finger-piece extending from said modi tying means to a point upon the OUtSh e of the sound-conveying tube.

In combination with a sound-conveying tube of a talking machine, an oscillatory tubular sound-modifying means with in said tube which is longitudinally divided, so as to provide a lon tudinally extending open part, and a finger-piece extending from said modifying means to a point upon the outside of the sound-ccnveying tube for oscillating the said modifying means.

In combination with a sound-conveying tube of a talking machine, said tube being provided with an internally screw-threaded portion, a sound-modifying means within said tube comprising a screw-threaded element adapted to be screwed into the screwthreaded portion of said soundeconveying tube, and said element being provided with a tubular part, a stem rotatably arranged in the tubular part of said element, said stem being provided upon one end with a fingerpiece and having its other end-portion extending beyond said element and into said sound conveying tube, and a valve like member upon said end-portion of the stem, consisting of a straight-portion adapted to be secured upon said stem, and a curved springpart extending from said straight-portion, and a soft fabric secured upon'said springpart, said fabric being in slidable contact with the inner surface-portion of the soundconveying tube, substantially as and [or the purposes set forth.

In combination with a sound-conveying tube of a talking machine, comprising a pair of flexibly connected tubular members, one of said members being arranged within the other member and being provided with a retaining shoulder and lmving an internally screw-threaded portion, a sound modifying means Within said inner member, said moditying means comprising a SC1'O.Vtlkl'ealdtd element adapted to be screwed into the screw-threaded portion of said inner member, and said element being rovided with a tubular part, a stern rotata ly arranged in the tubular part of said element, said stem being provided upon one end with a finger-' piece and having its other end-portion extending beyond. said elemeut and into said sound conveying tube, and a valve like member upon said end-portion of the stem.
16. In combination with a SOUIlCb-CODVQY-f ing tube of a talking machine, comprising a pair of flexibly connected tubular members,
