My invention re rail joints, and has especial reference to that g .il :ind de iuc the two contiguous shutting; V5 class of devices known in the art as insulated roll ends, held in proper ulnwncnt li ineens rail joints. of the side clamping; sectie,Y
One of the objects of my invention is to plates 6 and G src" .v provide trail joint, of the character referred tinu'zitions oli the respective side sections. to, by means of which one of the rail ends oi The'lmse plates, of the oint, es shown'7 un- 'lo two contiguous rails, referably the leevii dei-lie the rail bases. fin oil-set, et 7, is end, may be coinpleteily insulated troni the shown inl? l and Fig, 2, in the bese plete, other, and the provision otametollic bearing liy means of which the rail end ji .is profor the other rail end, preiereblythe apvided `with e. metallic hearing surface. jin preaching end, the construction being such es insulating pls-te ottici-responding thickness, 75 2o to avoid the usual olf-set in both the side and being inserted under rfi-il end A. rlhe in- Vhase members, or'sections, of the joint, to suleting plates 8 und 8 extend the full provide space tor the insulating materiel. length ot the respective sections, und its The diiliculties encountered, heretofore, sliown in Figs. und 3, are of nnilform cross in the effort to insulate one rail end only, by section, and inteiiit between the surfaces 'of St: providingI an olf-set in the base end side sec the mil and. thel respective side-clamping' tions, to accommodate the insulatingr metcsections. rial, or to compensate for the insulating me.- ln the modification shown in teriel on tlie'insulated side of the joint oy the oll`-set is in the side sections and the substitutionol additional metallic platos et rests directly upon the insulated 3o Lapproxiinotely equal thickness of that ot the .L3-9,' und upon tlie metallic insulating platefon the uninsuleted side, sections 5, 5. The insulutinA niet have been dueto the fact that, in such struc Si underlie the ruil end y. i, tures, the" side sections are unyieldingly 4, and they :ne ci clamped to thcuninsulutcd mil end, und tl lyequel to the oifset T. through the medium ofthe more or less i il) is it plate tic insulating materiel, they urcyieldinejly l venin@ lwtufcei'i clamped to the insulated ruil end, the innieta-ille mutuel., equality ol the clamping, tl'ius ell'octcd, i'cnl The uscii. 3 dering it difficult to nmintein tight `di ll 40 joint. ln my -in'iproved joint tue ipprtmcll ing rail end the end which tlie trein up# proches, which is the end that i-ieceives the J heavy impact oi' the moving vehicle oi' trein, g' is provided with metallic base or side-suli porting surfaces, upon which the mil rests; f
the leaving rail end, heilig subject to less severe e'ect, is entirely surrounded with in insulating medium.
Another object of my invention is to so 5o shape the protruding edges of the insulating material, or plates, that they will shed the i Water, which would otherwise lie/come iii-- sinuated between the seid insulatinenui-tc" rial and the surface of the reil. .ln the drawings: Eigure Il e. tion, partly broken ewey, shouf es iin-il. tl
'isul on the durefjiilit no f I claim and desire t'o secure by Letters Patent, of the United States, is:
In a rail joint, adjoining rail ends, an interposed insulating medium therebetween, strips of insulating material on opposite sides of said rails extending substantially the full length of the joint, said strips underlying the heads of the rails, covering the sides thereof and overlying their bases, a strip of insulating material underlying the base of one rail end only, a metallic joint structure comprising rail baise-supporting means shaped to receive one rail end in direct metallic contact therewith and to sup- 'port the insulatingr strip undeilying the 15 other rail end; metallic fish plate structues,
bearing on the insulation overlying the rail base and su porting the insulation underlyingr the rai head and bolts, insulated from the rail end which, has the insulated base support, connecting the sh plates through the rail.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
