RAZOR-STRG?.
. a suitable casing by means of a spring which is placed under tension when the Vstrop is drawn out of the casing and the stress or recoil of which will rewind the drawn-out strop in the casinfr.
The present invention is an improvement iipon the forin of spring-woiind strop covered by patent to Blasdell, No. 7 76,218, November 29, 1904, and relates incre particularly to the construction of the winding drum which is inclosed within the casing, and the means by which the end of the strop is attached to said winding drum.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central longitudinal section illustrative of the invention, and Fig. 2 a transverse secf tion thereof. Fig. Slis a detail perspective view, `partly broken away, ot a winding drinn to show the means by which the end i of the strop is connected therewith. Fig. 4
is a detail view of the end ot the strop which is to be attached to the winding drum.
Referring to the drawings, the casing within which the strop is wound comprises two wooden end heads 12 and a cylindrical sheet metal casing portion' 13 the ends of which are fitted into circular grooves near the peripheries of the said end heads, as in the construction shown and described in said patent. The end heads 12 are provided on their inner sides with central recesses orthe reception of the ends ot' a stationary shaft 14 provided at its ends with reinovable sheet metal sleeves 1,the casing parts being removably secured together by means of screws 1G passing through said end heads and engaging the shaft 14. Vithin the said casing and loosely surrounding the said shaft is a winding drum 17 which consists ot' a coiled piece of sheet metal having overlapping ends, the inner end beinfr provided with outwardly bent teeth 18 tor engageinentwith holes 19 in the/end of the strop 20, and the overlapping portion ot said drinn outside otl the said teeth serving io retain the strop in engagement with ihe latter. The cylindrical body ot the drinn is pretcrably torined slightly il g at its ends and over the lianges allai-ded by said liaring ends are fitted reinoifable heads or caps El having intui'iied lips engaging said flange or tlared ends and which caps serve to hold the overlapping oiiter end ot the drinn strip against the strop, and thus securely retain the latter iii engagement with the teeth 18. The said end caps are provided with openings loosely encircling the shaft 14 and which openings -receive the metal sleeves 15 which ailord bearings for said drinn at the walls ot said openings. v
in attaching the' strop Q0 to the ii'inding drinn the end heads or caps 21 of the latter are reinovedoi oinitted and the teeth 18 of the drum are then entered into the holes' 19 of the strop, and the end heads or caps revl then engagellivith tne -flared or flanged ends of the drinn, thus pressing the overlapping end of the strip of metal torining the di-iiin against the portion ot the strop held by the teeth 1S inside ot' or beneath the said ove-i'- lapping port-ion ot the drinn, and thus positively picveiitiiig the disengagf nient ot' said' teeth troni said strop.
Eiicircling the shaft 14, within the ","iiin 17, is a coil spring 2:2 preferably tapen'ii.N from end to end, one end or" said sprinti` be.- ing provided with a hook 23 which engages said druin by entering a hole or aperture therein, the other end of said spring being bent to engage a'slit 24 atvone end of the shaft 14, the said spring 22 thus connecting the said ,shaft 14 and the winding drinn 17 patent whereby the strop is attached to the winding drinn.
Patented Ang. 24, iitii.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A razor stropping device comprising a casing composed of end heads and a metallic cylindrioal portion between the same, 'a stationary shaimonnecting said end heads, a revoluble AWinding drum consisting of la coiled strip of sheet metal having an inner portion provided with teeth-and an outer portion overlapping said teeth, a strop to be coiled Within the said easing on said drum and provided at its inner end With holes engaged by said teeth, means for holding said outer portion against said strop to prevent .disengagement of said teeth from said strip, and a spring interposed between'an'd connected with said shaft and drum, said spring serving to retract said strop Within said casing after it has been drawn ont.
E2. A razor stropping device comprising a casing ooinposed of end heads and a metallic cylindrical portion between the saine, a stationary shaft connecting said end heads, a.
revoluble Winding drum consisting of a coiled strip oi sheet metal comprising anL cylindrical body of'said drm being slightly flared or ianged at its ends, a strop to be coiled Within the said casing on said druni and provided at its inner end with holes engaged by saidrteetli, removable heads or caps engaging the flared or flanged ends of said drum and serving to press the overlapping portion thereof against the part of the strop engaged by said teeth, to prevent disegagement of said strop from said teeth, and a springinterposed between and connected With said shaft and drum, said spring serving to retract said strop Within said casing after it has been drawn out.
ln testimony whereof I afliX my signature,
Witnesses.
