REEL FOR STRIP MATERIAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that L'VVALLACE F. FASSETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Reels for Strip Material, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to reels for strip material, particularly fabric tape, running webbing, ribbons and like articles, and its object is to provide an economical and durable reel which is of a simple construction and made up of a minimum number of parts. I attain this object in the device set forth in the following description and accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of my reel having the strip material wound thereon, parts of the reel being broken away; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section taken on line 03-a: in Fig. l but showing the reel empty, and Fig. 3, a transverse section of the core taken on line y-y in Fig. 2.
My reel generally comprises a core provided with a turning key and having loosely mounted thereon a pair of spaced side plates between which latter the strip material is wound upon the core.
The reel herein specifically illustrated and described is adapted for running fabric tape but it should not be considered that my invention is limited in its use to tape since the same may be employed with equal facil ity with other running strips having characteristics which enable the same to be wound on the reel in a manner similar to tape.
Referring to the drawings the reel consists of a pair of circular disks 2, 2 which are spaced apart in parallel arrangement and held together at their peripheral edges by sheet metal clips 3, 3. The disks 2, 2, which may be made of pasteboard or other suitable material, are provided with central apertures bounded by inner circular edges 4, 4. The disks 2, 2 are slit radially from the circular edges 4, at for a purpose which will presently appear, these slits being designated by the numerals 5, 5. The hollow core 6, which is of the same diameter as the apertures in the disks, is provided with a pair of end flanges, one of which I will term a flanged head 7 and the other a flange 8. One side of the core is provided with a slot 9 into which the extremity of the tape may be inserted. Both flanges present flat faces on their inner sides, and the head 7 is provided with a diametrically disposed aperture 10. A key 11, which is made out of spring wire bentto form a split ring, has its extremities 12, 12 straightened and sprung into the ends of the aperture 10 of the head 7. The periphery 13 of the head 7 is rounded ofl toward its outer face.
To assemble the parts the extremities 12, 12 of the split wire ring 11 are sprung into the ends of the aperture 1.0 in the head 7. The flange 8 is then pressed against the circular edge 4 in one of the disks and slipped through the aperture by giving the core a slight twist which causes a distortion of the edge 4 through the medium of the radial slits 5, 5. The flange 8 is in a like manner slipped through the central aperture in the other disk 2. The disks are then spread apart on the core 6 until they abut against the inner flat faces of the head 7 and the flange 8 respectively. Then the metal clips 3, 3 are clenched to the disks holding the same spaced in parallel arrangement.
To coil the tape A on the reel one extremity a of the tape is inserted in. the slot 9 in the core 6. The reel may be held in one hand and the key rotated by the other hand. Since the disks are loosely mounted on the core the latter being rotated by the key winds up the tape until the reel is full. The tape is then cut and prevented from uncoiling by doubling and tucking its extremity in under one of the clips 3.
It should be noticed that all of the parts of the core, if desired, may be made integral, and further the mounting of the disks upon the core can be effected without separating any of the parts or employing any additional means. The core 6, if desired, may be made solid and out of any suitable material, but I prefer to make the same by machining the parts out of a single piece of metal.
While I have herein illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, yet the same is to be regarded as being susceptible to such modification as may fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Pat ent is l. A reel for strip material comprising a core and a pair of centrally apertured sides spaced apart and mounted on said core. the said sides being slit outwardly from their central apertures and the said core being provided with flanged extremities to hold the sides in place, one ofsaid flanged extremities being slipped through the central apertures in the sides.
2. A reel for strip material -comprising a core, a pair of centrally aperture'd sides spaced apart and loosely mounted on said core, the said sides being slit outwardly from, their central apertures and the said core being provided With flanged extremities to hold the sides in place, one of said flanged extremities being slipped through the central apertures in the sides, and a swinging key carried by one of said flanged extremities for rotating the core relatively to the sides.
