UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. KELLETT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADDRESSING-MA CHINE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. KELLETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Addressing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to addressing machines of that type wherein printed labels are separated successively from a continuous strip or web and adhesively applied to articles to be addressed.
The object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and operation of addressing machines, and more particularly to provide an improved form of cutting shears for severing the labels from the web.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of an addressing machine embodying the'features of the invention, Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal central section of the machine, and Fig. 4 is a detail section viewed from the line 44 of Fig. 3.
The machine illustrated in the drawings is of that type adapted to be carried upon the arm of an operator and to be manually actuated, an address label being applied to an article by pressing the delivery end of the machine bodily upon the article.
As shown the machine comprises a casing or body, generally designated 10, preferably formed of sheet brass and providing a h0using 11 for a roll of printed labels joined together in a continuous web X, and a paste receptacle 12. As is usual in machines of this type the casing 10 is in the form of a tapered trough, and a hand grip 13 is provided on one of the side walls of the casing intermediate the ends of the trough.
A spindle 14 is j ournaled in the side walls of the casing adjacent the larger end of the trough for carrying the roll of webbing X. A paste-applying feed belt 15 serves for advancing the webbing to the delivery end of the casing 10. This feed belt turns over a roller 16 which is j ournaled in the side walls of the casing adjacent the mouth of the trough and is manually actuated, a knob 17 of convenient form to be engaged by a finger of the operator being mounted upon Specification of Letters Patent.

the spindle of the roller in front of the hand grip 13.
A pair of cutting shears, comprising fixed and movable blades designated 18 and 19 respeotively; are provided at the delivery end of the casing 10 in front of the roller 16. As is usual in machines of this class, the movable blade 19 of the shears serves the double purpose of cutting a printed label from the webX delivered to the shears by the pasteapplying feed belt 15, and of stamping the severed label upon the article to which it is attached.
As shown, the fixed and movable blades 18, 19, of the shears are pivotallyconnected by a set-screw 20 and are removably secured to the end of the casing 10. For this purpose a spring clip 21., preferably formed from a folded strip of sheet metal, such as brass and having the free end of one of the leaves, as 22, provided with a hook 23, is permanently secured to the stationary blade 18 of the shears, as by means of solder. This spring clip is adapted to fit over the end of the fioor of the casing 10, the hook 23 being then in engagement with a transverse shoulder 24 provided upon the lower side of the floor. The shoulder 24 is provided through applying a strip of sheet metal 25-to the floor of the casing, as with solder, this strip being preferably extended over the floor and side walls of the casing adjacent the mouth of the trough, as most clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, thereby constituting a reinforcement for the corners of the trough and for the journal bearings of the spindle of the roller 16 and providing for a much more securely soldered connection between the strip and the walls of the casing than can be obtained by merely solderhig together two flat surfaces.
As the stationary blade 18 of the shears is preferably formed from steel, to which the folded edge of the spring metal clip 21 is soldered with difficulty, an intermediate strip 26, preferably of tinned copper, is applied to the inner side face of the blade 18 and soldered thereto, the socket member 22 thereupon being soldered to the strip 26. In order to obtain a more securely soldered connection between the intermediate strip 26 and the blade 18, the ends of the strip 26 are overturned upon the ends of the blade 18, as shown at 27, 28, Fig. 1.
A spring depressed lever arm 29 is provided for actuating the movable blade 19 of the shears. As shown, this lever arm has a yielding pivotal connection with the side wall of the casing 10 at 30, and extends along the side of the casing to a position beyond the shears 18, 19, where it is provided with a tappet 31 for striking the work table (not shown) when the instrument is depressed by the operator to apply a pasted label to an article resting on the table. Preferably the yielding pivotal connection between the lever arm 29 and the side wall of the casing 10 at 30 is provided by forming the inner end of the arm into a coiled spring 32 extending perpendicularly to the body of the arm, the end of the spring being then permanently secured, as by means of solder, to the casing wall. Operative connection between the movable blade 19 of the shears and the arm 29 is preferably effected through an eye-rod 33 permanently attached, as at 34, to the back of the blade 19.
In order that the coiled spring 32 may exert a regulated lateral pressure upon the blade 19 to insure a cutting engagement between the fixed and movable blades 18 and 19 of the shears, the eye-rod 33 is adjustably connected to the actuating lever arm 29. To this end a bracket 35 is carried by the arm 29 intermediate its ends, this bracket being provided with a longitudinally extending threaded socket 36. A flanged stud 37, having a threaded shank 38 running in the socket 36, enters the eye 39 of the rod 38, the flange 40 of the stud being adapted to bear laterally upon the rod 33 about the eye. A lock nut 41 runs on the threaded shank of the stud 37 to engage an end wall of the socket 36 and secure the stud 37 in adjusted position.
In using the device an operator carries the casing 10 in his arm, a firm hold being had. by grasping the grip member 13. Labels having an adhesive applied to their under surface are successively advanced upon the shears 18, 19, through advancing the pasteapplying feed belt 15 by manually turning the roller 16. If now the instrument be depressed upon the work table, the cutting shears 18, 19, are operated by a raising of the lever arm 29 by contact with the tappet 31 with the table. A pasted label is thus severed from the continuous web delivered by the paste-applying feed belt 15. By a continued downward movement of the movable blade 19 of the shears the severed label is stamped upon the article to which it is to be applied. The coiled spring 32 serves for depressing the lever arm 29 and raising the movable blade 19 of the shears when the instrument is again raised from the table, while by a suitable adjustment of the threaded shank 38 of the flanged stud 37 in the bracket 35 carried by the lever arm 29, a regulated lateral pressure of the spring 32 may be exerted upon the movable blade 19 through the eye rod 33 to insure a cutting engagement between the two blades of the shears.
By means of the copper strip 26 applied to the face of the stationary steel blade 18 and extending over its ends, a securely soldered connection between the blade and the spring clip 21, by means of which the blade is detachably secured to the casing 10, is obtained. Inasmuch as a repeated use of the instrument in the manner described tends to dislodge the shears from the end of the casing, this secure connection is of great importance, while the use of the strip 25 extending over the floor and side walls of the casing adjacent its mouth to provide a shoulder for engagement by the hook 23 so reinforces the end walls of the casing as to effectually prevent their being broken.
I claim as my invention:

In an addressing machine, in combination, a body having web serving mechanism, web cutting shears comprising a stationary blade mounted upon the body and an oscillatable blade pivoted thereto, and an actuating spring lever arm extending at an angle to the lane of the shears and connected to the osci atable blade at one side of its pivot, the connection between the spring lever arm and the oscillatable blade being adjustable in the direction 01' the length of the spring lever arm.
