Specification of Letters Patent.

'Flat Articles, et' which the following is a specification,
l'lolde'rs or cases of various kinds have heretofore bee made to receive letters, bills, documents, etc. Holders or cases have been niade where the pockets were narrowest near the inner edges of the divisions and widest at the outer or ent 'ance apertures, but in thisl structu-re articles would bind and be pinched at the narrow part. and it has therefore been ditiicult to readily remove or replace the sa1ne and the object of my'inven tion is to provide a spacing device of predetermined and fixed proportions, thus insuring the capacity ot' the pocket of the case or holder with particular reference to the articles the same are intended to receive.
In the device of my invention, I provide a plurality of divisional sheets :and bellowsfolded sheets or devices connecting the respcctive outer edges of said divisional sheets,
and devices connected to the inner surfaces of the sheets near the bottomedges :tor maintaining the sheets a` predetermined distance apart. The thickness of these sheets and the predetermined distance at which they maintain the divisional sheets apart bears a direct relation to the articles to be received tention that these spacing devices shall be slivhtly thicker than the phonograph recor s or other flat articles to be received between the divisional sheets so that the articles to be received may be readily inserted and removed and also so that when in position they shall not be clamped or held with force at any point, and I prefer in connection with these parts to employ a holder of covers, a back and aphinged flap and also side braces; the object of the side braces being to keep the covers apart :and the divisional sheets spread at their entrance opening, with the bellows si'desainider some tension, and I prefer to form the hinged'iiaps of two rigidly connected members at right angles to one another forming a support. for raising one edge of the case into an inclined position, and also a record upon which may be stated an index of the articles received between the divisional sli/eets, all of which is hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, Figure l-is a perspective view representing the holder or case of my invention in a compact and closed condition. Fig. 2 is a side elevation representing the holder or case opened np and occnpyin-g an inclined position and spread apart by the si'dc braces. In Fig. t these strips h are shown as connected to similar faces of the sheets f but disconnected from the adjacent face ot' the opposite sheet, and in this forni of my invention I have shown a flexible hinge strip 'a' as connected to the outer face tit' the first divisional sheet and extending across the bottom edges of the several divisional sheets, and secured thereto and lto the outer faces of the parts it. This strip in the nature ot a hinge holds these parts in a close relation when the case is \either closed or open, preventingany opening up tendency between the part-s.
`In the form of myy invention shown iii Fig. 5, I dispense with the hinge strip z' and secure one opposite edge ot' each of the strips h to the surface oit the divisional sheet-s f as shown in Fig. t and in lieu of thev liexible hinge strip 1i employ a cord l passing through the sheets f and strips it, the
ends thereof being secured in any desired manner.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig.
I (5, the divisional sheets f eaclrliave narrow strips r secured to their opposite surfaces near their bottom edges, and which strips in thcir'combined thickness are about equalvto the thickness of the single strips 71, Figs. 4: and 5. The strips L employed for spacing apart the sheets are comparatively small in proportion to the height of the divisional sheets between their bottom and top edges, and the construction shown in Fig. 5 is one quite possible of realization for this reason. These strips k may be of any desired material; they'are preferably made of wood and are slightly thicker between their connected faces than the thickness of a phonograph record or similar article to be received in the holder or case, and consequently it is impossible for the record to pass below the upper edge of the strip and it is also impossible when the ease or holder is open for the record to be pinched at any place, and it may be removed and inserted with equal facility.
