To on whom fit may concern:
Be it known that if, Join' lul. finira, a citizen of the United States of america, residing at Belton, in the county of Hempstead and State of .i-kansas, have invented new and useful improvements in 'telegraph and rTelephone loles, of which the following is a spccii'ication.
This invention relates to n'ietallic 'telegraph or telephone poles, and the object of the invention is to provide a comparatively light, durable and strong device of this character coinprising a base forined of suitable plastic inaterial and having U-shaped reinforcing inenibers provided with upwardly projecting ends, and a pole portion comprising a plurality of rods, one of said rods being centrally arranged, the remaining rods diverging frein the central rod toward a base plate, and the base plato being secured to the projecting portions of the reinforcing ineinbers provided by the plastic base, and the rods being provided with a plurality of rctaining ineinbers whereby the rods are secured in spaced relation with each other, and whereby rigidity and -firniness are iinparted to the structure.
With these and other objects in .fiew which will be apparent as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrai'igenientof parts hereinafter fu ly described and claimed.

ln the accompanying drawings the nuineral l designates the base portion of the iniproved pole which is adapted to be inserted within the ground. 'ihis base portion l is constructed of suitable plastic inaterial, such as ceinent, and niay be of an octagon shape as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings. yl`he base l is provided with U- sliaped reinforcing inenibers 2. rlhe ineinbers 2 are adapted to be positioned within the base at a substantially right angular relation to each other and are adapted to have their free ends threaded and to extend a suitable distance above the upper face of the base l. The upper face of the base is provided with a inetallic top plate l, and this plate is provided with a plurality of openings adapted for the reception of the projecting portions of the U-shaped reinforcing incnibers 2. The plate fl is also provided with a plurality of spaced cut away portions or depressions 5, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. y
The pole ineinber of the device is coinposed of aplurality of vertical rods, preferably coinprising a central rod G and bracing rods 7. rlhe rods 6 and 7 have their lower ends secured to a base plate S through the inediuin of shrunk nut J engaging both the top and the bottoni of the plate S. rlhe plate 8 is also )rovided with a Jluralit i of o ienines l0 adapted for the reception of the threaded projecting portions 3 of the U-shaped reinforcing eleinents provided for the'plastic base l. 'ihese threaded projections 3 are provided with suitable retaining eleinents ll by which the pole portion of the device is securely retained upon the base l, and the depressions or cut away portions 5 of the top plate et are adapted for the reception of the shrunk nuts 9 upon the lower face of the plate 8. As illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 9 of the drawings, the edges of the plate 8 are inclined downwardly to provide a substantial apron adapted to extend below the upper portion of the plastic base l and to serve as a protector for he saine.
The central rod (l extends upwardly froin the base in a tiue vertical line, while the bracing rods 9 incline upwardly toward the central rod rlhe rods 7 being retained in proper spaced relation with the rod 6 through the inediuin of a plurality of llO spaced collars 12. These collars or plates 12 are provided with suitable openings for the rods 6 and 7 and are retained in position upon the rods through the medium of shrunk nuts 13. The post is provided with suitable cross arms A1d, adapted for the reception of the insulators 15 which receive the telegraph or telephone Wires. These cross arms 14: are secured to the rods 6 and 7 by a U-shaped yoke 16. rlhe yokes 16 have their ends threaded and are adapted to project through suitable openings provided by the cross arms 14 and to be secured thereto through the medium of retaining elements 17. rhe upper cross arm 1alis provided With a suitable horizontally eX- tending brace 18, and both ot the cross arms let are provided with inclined bracing members 19 which have their lower end offset and secured to the upper plate 12. rlhe insulators 15 are each provided with a U- shaped cleat 2O which is adapted to engage the loiver sides and edge of the cross arms and positioned upon the vertical arm of the longe-r member ot the cleat is an L-shaped member 21 having its otlset linger engaging the upper rear side of the cross arms.
rlhe longer arm et the U-shaped cleat Q0 is threaded and adapted to extend through a central opening provided by the insulator members and to receive threaded retaining members whereby the insulator is securely retained upon the cross arm. ln Figs. 10, 11 and 12, the cross arms are illustrated connected With the bracing reds 7 at a point- Where they diverge away from thD central rod 6, but the mode of connecting these arms with the pest is substantially similar to that above described. The rods 6 and 7 may be secured together, above the cross arins lil, in any desired or preferred manner. ln the present instance l have provided an ornamental ball 22 having a hollow passage adapted for the reception or the rod and also adapted to be rigidly secured to the rod to prevent the saine from becoming disengaged from each other. it desired, the bracing rods 7 may be curved, as illustrated in Fig.

2. ln a device of the character described, a 'plastic base, tE-shaped reinforcing elements arranged at right angles to each other for the base, the E.i-shaped members being provided vcit-h threaded extending portions, metallic top plate for the base. and a` pole mei'nber constructeifl oi metallic rods, said member ccmprisiing a central rod having converging bracing rods, plates for retaining the bracing rods in spaced relation With the central rod, cross arms upon the pole, a base plate for the pole, said base plate having its edges downtnrned to provide an apron and having openings adapted for the reception of the threaded ef-:tensions of the U-shaped reinforcing members, and securing members adapted to engage the threaded extensions to retain the pest upon the plastic base.
