UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY CI GRANT, OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY. ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE LIONELL MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
BRUSH-HOLDER FOB Morons.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 22,
Patented 'Aug. 17, 1909.
I was. Serial No. 412.052.
To all 'wlmm it may concern: v
Be it known t-hnt I, HARRY (.1. GRANT, n i citizen of the Uni t ed States. mid resident of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and Shite of New Jersey, have invented certuin new and useful improvements in l-h-uslollohlers for Motors, of whirh the following is n specilicution.
This invention relates to hrush holders for dyninnos and motors and u prominent. oh icct is to provide it holder of simple construction in which the brush holding member nmylc quickly connected and disconnected and which holds the brush in contact with scone l5 mutntor and automatically adjusts itself with res met to the commutator surfi'ice.
A furt. er object of the in'vcntionis to pro vide a. construction in which the parts are stamped from sheet inetnl end in which the spring of the metal is utilized in holding the I'rush against the commutator.
4 In the accom nnying drawings forming part of this speci CatlUi1,-l l{.ll1( I, is at side view of my novel device disposed in operaa plan View of the hrunh holding mem er, n
portion thereof being broken awny. Fig. 3,
is aside view of a. )ortion of the device with parts in section. iq.,4, is a plain View of it movement of the brush holding mend-er.
A, indicates a portion of :1 metal strip as-- sumed to is fastened to the frame of a motor and to which stri is connected :1. metal plate 8, ly rivets C, L, or other suitable means, and connected to the plate T3, by n l'iinge E, is a. curved memlcr l), or if referred, a spring presented at the point o connection using spring metal may l'c utilized in mcmlers I) end 'B wil in integral. 'lhe l-cnd of the meni 'er 1), contains on opening: I), and said memler at its end terminates in a short projection i of reduced dimensions, end is curved downward as shown. A brush holding momhcr (1, formed prcl'ero' ly 'ol' spfing sheet metal, is provided at one end fwith a short projection G; and at an inter- -5'0 mediate point contains it hole H, and the i. Izrnsh carrying end of said member is preferably shaped by bendin to forin n. rectnngw, lnr socket I, in which'is held a brush J, of copper gauze convolutel armn' ed, A cerbon brush may be usetl if pro rred. The
|' brush J, rests on the commutator K. The
projection G, on the member (l, bears on the edge nt the hottom of the opening l), and the point l .'projcrt s through the hole ll, us illustrntml. in such it nninner thnt the mono hex-G, is supported on a line and can rock Intel-idly on points l nnd G, so that if the comnmtntor K, is cone-shaped the l-rush J, would readily adopt itself to the eonnnutntor surface, the memher G, turning on the narrow points of support. Said nicn'rber holds the brush J, to the commutator K, with u. certain pressure due to the spring in member ('3. or if this member is made rigid by turning a screw L; which is threaded in the member B, and bears against the under side-of the member 1), thus forcing the latter upward and consequently forcibly pressing the brush J against the connnutetor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. A brush holder. comprising a brush holding member containing a hole and on'o end having e'projection,.a second member containing an opening in which the pr0jection of. the first named member rests, and a point which enters the hole in said first member, the, arrangement supporting the first member in rocking engagement.
2. A brush holder comprising a yokeshnped member yieldingly supported at one end, containing an opening at its bend and having a. reduced portion, a second member provided with a'hrushholding socket, contnining an intermedietely located hole in which the reduced portion is on aged, and on end irojection hearing in the rend opening, and means for varying the pressure exerted hy the yoke member on the second member.
Ii. A brush-holder comprising a yoke shaped member of s iring sheet metal, and a. brush holding megnlier also of sheet metal and engaged with the yoke member, the on- 100 ti ement permitting a rocking of the brush F10 ding member relative to sand yoke mem- Signed at New York city in the county of New York and State of New York this 18th 105 day of November A.
