T 0 all whom itmo'y concern:
Be it known that l, l nnnnrcr-r WILLIAM MEYER, a citizen otthe United States, residing at Merrillsn, in the county of Jackson and State of Vm isconsin, have invented new and useful improvements in Roofing Shingles or Tiles, of which the following a. speciiicetion.
This invention. relates to improvements in roofing shingles or tiles, the object of the in vention being to provide a tile of novel construction whereby, in the assemblage of the shingles or tiles upon the roof, the shingles of each row Will interlock and the shingles of the different rows interlop and engage eoch other and the sheath-hoords of the roof in such a. menner as to thoroughly cover all joints or crevices against leakage and hold the tiles firmly end securely against shitting Without the aid of extraneous fastenings.
the invention consists of the features of "construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is e perspective view of e roof constructed of the improved shingles or tiles embodying my'invention. Fig. 2 is s lon gitudinal section through a portion of the roof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through several of the tiles of o tier or row. 4 is s top perspective view of one of the shin les or tiles. Fig. 5 is at bottom plan view or the some. i
The tiles or shingles embodying my invention may he made oi' Wood, motel, glass, 5 rcelsin, orof any suitable plastic composition, cement being commonly employed. Each tile is preferably of oblong rectengulor form and comprises 9. body 1 provided at one side With e longitudinal laterally extending tongue 2 end at its opposite side with longitudinel groove 3. From the under of the body at one end of the tile depends supporting lug or projection i, which may he rectsn 'ulsr in form as shown reinforced from he body of the tile by e stsywvire 5 embedded in the tile body end i 1 processot molding tl e tile. c o M end. of the trio is transversely of tiles against reek-age.
under side, is shown at 6, to provide 21 hcsrmg shoulder 7 and a rorwsrdly extending supporting flange or hp S. It will he closerved thot the tongue 2 and upper Well of the groove 3 are coextensive in length with the full length of the tile ingluding the lip 8,. 5 while the lower ionge or (veil of the groove terminates in line with and forms lsterol extension of the hearing shoulder 7.
The shingles or tiles are laid inpractice upon the roof frame of the house in tl'fzLIlfverse rows or tiers, with the successive rows or tiers disposed in lapping relation between the coves and ridge beams of the roof. The construction of the outer surfaces of the boundary tiles of course varies from the specific construction disclosed to the extent necessary to secure iinish portions the edges of the root, but all the intermediate tiles embody in full the subject matter of the invention As shown in Fig. 2, the lugs upon the upper ends of the tiles project downward into engagement with the upper edges of the sheath-hoards 10 of the rooi and ere there by supported from downward n1ovement, hile the shoulders 7 of each row o "tiles beer against the up er rear edges of t underlying row end the lips or flanges 8 rest upon the upper surfaces of the rear edges of the underlying row. The flanges and shoul ders of the lower tier of tiles engage the em ii heo-ni oi the roof, which is properly tori to interlock therewith, by which construction and srrsngeinent as lescrihcd the tiles are prevented from having any downward movement and overlap in suohe manner to securely close the joint between the rows The tiles of each row interlock through their tongue and groove connections, whereby they are properly held in assembled relation and. their joints closed. Gt course, the tongues may he cemented in the grooves, thus securing an absolutely Wetei'-* glit connection under all conditions oi surface.
Having thus described the invention, whet l claim. is zri. shingle or tile comprising snohlong rec-- tsnguls-r hotly provided at oneside with a,
longitudinal tongue and at its opposite side with a longitudinal groove, the rear end of thetile being formed With a de endin bearing lug and theforward end 0 the ti e with a bearing shoulder and an overhanging forwardly extending supportin lip or flange, the tongue and upper Wall 0 the groove being coextensive in length with the full length of the tile and. the lower Wall of the groove terminating line with and forming l0 alateral extension f the-bearing shoulder.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. y
