1 have invented certain new and nseiul iniproveinents .in Desks, ot which the following is a speeit.,
VThe present invention appertains to -interior home Creer-ationsj being de igned to provide cabinet; mantel poss sing both utility and orne.nientation7 the construction being- .such :is to provide a` desk, shelves for books` or like articles, and compartments for or boxes containingniedi? hidden ironi View and adapted to be conveniently at' hand in an emergency.
For a full micerstanding or" the invention and the merits thereofl and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the ineans tor effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accon'ipanying drawings.
While the invention niay be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and niinor details without dc-i parting' from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front View of a cabinet inantel embodying the invention. Fig. Q is a sido View, the full lines indicating' the desk when lowered and the dotted lines showing the position of thedesk when elevated. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View ot' the littings for supporting the desk when lowered. F fl is a horizontal section on the line (lf-Mrt of Fig. i), shown@v the parts on a large scale.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the Views ot' the drawings .by the saine reference characters.
The mantel as illustrated comprises hollow columns 1, upper shelves 2 and Z5. lower shelves Ll, and a series of coinpartinents 5 immediately below the shelt and between the upper ends of the hollow columns l, said compartments being closed at. their front by means oi' a hinged cover G iorining the desk when lowered, as indicated in Figs. 1 and i.' The space within they hollow columns 1 inay be utilized for storingreceptacles containing medicines, toilet preparations and the like, so as to conceal the saine from yiew and ad- Y quired.
wings 15 init ot their beingl readily at hand when reloors 'iY close the spaces and are so constructed :and hinged a, not to dctract` 'roin the oin-.nnental app-.minime of the inantel as :i whole. ri`he end spaces t'orined between the shelves 2 and .El may be closed and access 4had thereto by ineans of doors S, which may be supplied with plate. or lnishcd in any inann n rThe swinging cover or desk t3' hinged at, so as to close upward. and open downward.
-lor supporting the desk t3 when Alowered to enable it to sustain a reasonable ainonnt oft.
weight andpressure`v theineans shown inestclearly in Fig. have been devised. bracket 10`is secured to each end portion of the desk G and a brace 11 pi'v'oted at one end to the bracket 10 and its opposite end is slidable in a guide the latter being' se'- cnred tothe side incl'osing the space which is subdivided to forni the eoinpartnients 5. The bracket 10 comprises a base 13 and spaceduprights lei, thelatter being an integral part of the blank from which the bracket is formed, said npri its being bent about as shown to project 'vertically or about at a right. angle troni the base 13. The guide 12 conigrises two members Ywhich are spaced apart, each rneinber embodying wings l'and 1G, which arranged relatively at a right angle to each other, the facing outward and the wings 1b extending` J.'eai.v.1rd. .A third wing l? is `provided at one edge oi the guide adjacent to the side of the desk and apertured to receive the fastenings by means of' which said guide secured thereto. Extensions 1S and 19 are provided, respectively, at the upper and lower ends orf the guides to lit againstthe top and bottoni of the ydesk to which they are attached by suitable tastenings passed through openings therein. rThe lower ends otl the rear wings lo are cnt away, as shown most clearly in l rm. 3, thereby providing shoulders 2O for the tions 21 at the inner ends of the braces 11 to engage under. Each brace 11 is provided. at its inner end with an enlarhenient 21 which projects beyond opposite sides oi `the brace to engagewith the guides at. each .side ot the'space or slot formed bete. n them, as also to engage onder. the shoulders 2O and 'hereby support and the posit ion ot the desk 5 when lowered, indicated in Figs. 1
and The ari-anantient.y ci: the parts is llO siichiasv admit et' 4the brace 11 lying close teatheideskiwhen lowered so as netto be in .ithe'wfi while' at'the same time affording ample support-*fior the desk to sustain the usual l-wei ht and strain. Whentlie desk 6 is raised rom.' the position shown by the full l lines in Fig. 2, the braces ll move rearward as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
lt Will be readily understood from tl e dis-4 elosure'lierein that the inven'tioii result in the provision ot a mantel of the type aforesaid adapted to be used as a desk, a book rack, a shelf for ornaments and a cabinet for the storage ot' bottles or kindred articles desired to be kept conveniently at hand, and which mantel is also ornamental and adapted .to be finished according to any design in conformity to the finish or interior decoration of the room orapart-ment for which intended.
