PHILIP A. MYERS, F ASHLAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO F, E. MYERS AND BROTHER, OF ASHLAND, OHIO, A COPARTNERSHIP. l l
WRKLNG MAD FR FOWER-PUMPS.
@riginal application lil-ed June 8, 1908, Serial To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Pi-iiLiP A. MYERS, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Ashland, in. the county of Ashland'and 'State of (lhio, have invented certain 4new and useful Improvements in l/Vorking Heads for Powerl )unips ,ot' which the following is a specifica l tion, reference being had therein to the ac.
Ait)
compa-nying drawings.
This', invention relates to working heads for power pumps and the object of the invention is to rovide a working head of this character winch will permit thFe removal of thev working parts of the puinpfwithout disconnecting, or in any way interfering with the discharge pipe or operating gearing for the pump; to so. construct suoli a working head as to render the same water-tight at all points; to so construct the head that it will have a very short base and that the operat ing mechanism will be located close to the supporting surface; to sosuppo'rt the operating gearing thereon that it will not interfere with vthe removal of the working pai-ts;y
and to provide such a working head which will be simple in its construction and operation and which will be strong and durable, the parts of which will not be liable to become disarranged.
W ith these objects in View my invention consists in certain vnovel features and in cer? tain combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter to be described, and then more particularly pointed out in the claiin's.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View, taken centrally 'through a wei-hing head embodying] my in Vention; Fig. Q is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line u w of Fig. l and looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the upper portion of the base; Fig. tis a detail plan view of the base; Fig 5 is a detail view of the cross head; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of one ot' the bearing brackets.,
The present application is a division ol i the application tiled by applicant J une S,
' 1908, trier. No. 437,280.
ln these drawings l have illustrated the preferred torni .of iny invention and have shown the saine as comprising a hollow base 'i whichdllay be secured upon a support or platform ot any suitable character and which is provided a point between the upper Speccavtion oi Letters Patent.

which is mounted a supporting ring 3 adapted to support the suction pipe and upper end of the suction 4;, the ring; pipe be1ng,-'
preferably screwthreaded to enable the saineto be readily connected to and disconnected from each other. The flange 2 and ring 3 divide the hollow base l into two parts'. and form above the ring 3 a chamber 5 which is provided with a closure (3 adapted to be seycured to the base by bolts. 7 extending through the closure and through a flange 8 formed on the u p peiT end of the base,a pack- :l-
ing being inserted Abetween said flange andsaid closure. `This chamber 5 is provided with an outlet 9 which is preferably formed integral with 4the `base l and is adapted to have the outlet pipe l0 secured thereto.
In order that there may be no leakage between the chamber 5 and the lower part of the base, it is desirable that a water-tightl joint should be formed between the flange Q and the supporting ring 3, and, to this end,
l have inserted a packing ll between theringand the liange and have provided the ring with an upwardly extending aperture'd collar or cage 12, which, in the present 1n- "stance, is formed integral therewith and terminates a short distance below the closure for the upper end ot the chamber 5. Adjustable clamping members are carried by the closure (3 and are adapted to engage the .upper edge bf the collar lL* and thereby clamp the ring El tightly upon the flange 2. This clamping incans preferably comprises a series of boltsl 13 threaded into aperturesI in the closure (l and having their lower ends adapted to engage the upper edge of the cpllar and their upper ends squared or otlierii'ise provided with a wrench grasp 14, thus enabling the saine to be turned down tightly upoipthe collar l2. A suitable capor hollow nut is inounted upon that portion of the bolt 13 which extends beyond the closure (l, and a packing 1G is inserted between said nut or cap and the upper side oli' the closure.
Thus, by tightening down the cap, a watertight connection is inade between the cap and the closure and all leakage prevented about the bolt 13, and further, the nut oi" Acap l5 serves as a Jain-nut which tends to prevent the inovenient'of the bolt lf3 in the closure (l.
. gland about thev rod 17 and a 4cap 2B in- Iabout' the rod'15 to secure the packing Aand to Which the pulnp rod 17 is secured its center with an aperture 28 within which main portion by means of bolts 34, and, inastirely removed from thel guide rods and the The pump rod 17, which carries at its lower end the piston, extends upwardly through the closure 6 and is connected at its outer end to suitable operating mechanism. The closure is preferably provided with ay packing box, through which the rod extends and which comprises a cupshaped depression or gland 2O formed in the closure 6 and having an aperture 2.1,at its lower end, i through which the pump rod entends. Paching material 22 is inserted in the cupshaped sert-ed vin the upper end., of the receptacle firmly in place.
In order that the cross head may be. roadily attachedI to and removed from the guide rod and pump rod I prefer to form the same in two pieces by dividing the same along a vertical plane, taken longitudinally of the cross head and near the center of the several apertures therein. This line 'of division extends outwardly tothe surface of the cross head just beyond the apertures 27 at either end of the cross head and thus divides the" Icross head into a main portion 3Q and a removable portion 33 which is secured to the much as the line of division extends through the apertures Q7 and 28 therein, it will be apparent that upon separating the two parts of the cross head that the saine can be en pump rod.
The main portion of the cross head is provided'near its outer end with bearing lugs or wrist pins 35, upon which are journaled the upper ends of the connecting rods 3G, the lower ends of which are journaled upon suitable crank pins 37 eccentrically mounted on the gear wheels 38. These gear wheels are mounted upon the base 1 in. any suitable manner,- preferably by securi the same to the op osite ends of a sha. ,'39 which is journa ed in Asui-table bearings 4() upon the base 1,these bearings being vpreferably formed in the inner ends of brackets 4l secured to the base near the opposite sides thereof. ln order to secure these brackets irmly to the base I prefer to provide the hase with sinaportiug plates 42, which, in the present' instance, are cast integral therewith and are ot Such a shape and, are so arranged as to form a sin'niorting` surface for the braeltets (t1 which are detachably secured thereto by means or ho ts l2-5. The greats 3S are rotated by nieuwe ot pinions itl unwanted upon a shaft l5 which is journalcd at a point removed lroin the base 1 and providezil with a suitable driving` gear, such as the pulley hf. 'lht shaft l5 is prel erably mounted in hearings 17 .lorn'ied in the outer ends ot the lbrackets #tl and has the pinit is elelsecured thereto on the outer sides ot tid bearings and the drivingA pulley Alt? and an idler ilt) mounted thereon hrtwcen the brackets, rl`hus it will be seen thatv the operating gearing so supported un the hase 1 as to be entirelyv out, o t! alinenient `vvith the upper end thereof and that. by reniovinpr the closure (i and paratingr the cross head from the guide rods and pump rod, the entire working parts olf the pnnip may be removed therefrom without' interllringr with any partis thereoi'.E other than those uwntioinxd. 'lhese working parts, in the present instance, include not onlyY the pinnp rod and the plunger and valve which are connected to the pump rod, but' also the surtion pipe 4 and the parts carried Lhvielnj, all oll which may, it' desired, be rennn'ofl through the upper end ot the base without interteringl either with the pipe conntationsy or the beltiiig: or operating; geariznij oli the punip.
In pumps oit this f-lnn'afstcr it is very desirable that the uta-hing; head should be what is known as a lowdown head, i'. c., a head havinga very short hasn and havingthe operating' nu anisin located close to the siipportinpl surlatfe, thus not only economizinov space and material,y but ln'ingingpih the st iin close to the support and practically eliminating the tendency of the base to tilt and work loose troni its tasteninrg's'. It will be observed that l have aeconuilished this result and have provided a low-down base havingthe shafts ot the operating mechanism supported on one side thereof and in sustantially the saine horizontal plane asy lt will further be ap.
characterwhich will, as stated, permit the -i removal of ally the Working parts Without 'the dislocation of 'or interference in any manner .with the discharge pipe or the belts or other operating gearing; that this vworking head is of a watertight construction, preventing all leaking between the several parts thereof? and further, that the construction and `operation of the working head and its operating mechanism is of a simple character which is not liable to be come disarranged or inoperative and which is of a strong, durable nature capabie of withstanding a large amount of strain and heavy usage. v i
I wish i't'to be understood that l do not desire to be limited to the details of construe Ation shown 4and described, for obvious modications will occur -toa person, skilled in tl1e"`art.
litavin thus fully described my invention, what l ciliim as new andy desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A 1. vA workingv head ofthe character vde- \sciibe d comprising a. hollow base, an inwardly extending projection carried by said base,'a supporting ring mounted on said projection,j a suction pipe supported by said '1f-rin an apertured member suported by sai( ring and extending upwar ly there from, a closurefor the upper end of said base,l anda part carried by said closure and adapted to engage said aper'tured member to clamp said supporting ring upon said projection.
