SINGLE-TRIGGER MECHANISM FOR DOUBLE-BARREL SHO'IGUNS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application filed January 5, 1909. Serial No. 470,821.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JAMES Lanna, a citizen of the United States,1-esiding at Traer, 1n the county of 'lama, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improveanents in Single-Trigger Mechanism for Double-Barrel Shotguns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1tappertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to single trigger mechanlsms tor double-barrel shotguns and has for its object to provide a trigger mechanism including but a single trigger which' may be pulled successively to fire first the right hand barrel and then the left hand barrel, the mechanism being also arranged and constructed-lo fire either barrel singly. Above all, I have'in view the provision of an extremely simple mechanism of this class, it consisting, properly speaking, of
but two elements which are carried by the trigger plate and are arranged to successively engage the right and left hand sears of'the gun, the above mentioned structure having been described in my forfeited application filed .ivlarch 2T, 190$;and serially numbered 423,700.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a double-barrel shotgun of the hammer type, the stock of the gun being shown in dotted lines so as to disclose tho trigger mechanism in' top plan. Fig. Q is a sectional view taken on the line 2'2 of Fig. l and looking in the directionof the left hand sear. is a detail perspective view of the trigger, its mounting, and the two elements embodying my invention. the left hand soar lug being alsoshown. Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig.2. but. taken on the line "dc-4 of Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the right hand soar, the several elements of the trigger be ing shown in full lines in normal position. that is when the hammer is cooked, and in fired position in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, butv looking in another direction, and Fig. (3 is a detail perspective view of the left hand fscar lu in the drawings, andnore particularly in Fig. 1, there is shown a double ba -l shotgun. the toll hand barrcl being-iv iouted by lhercl'crclu-c character I and the right hand barrel by the rclorcnce character ll. lhe lcl't hand hannrer is indicated 1 by the name til it) and the right hand hammer by the numeral 11, the left and right; hand sears' being indicated by the numerals l2 and 13 and being of the usual construction and actuated in the usual manner. As the hammeractuating mechanism in no way affects my invention, it will not be specifically described, it. being, however, clearly shown in Figs. and 4- of the drawings.
invention, as has heretofore been stated, in-
cludes but a single trigger which is indi cated' by the numeral Ll, the leaf of the trigger being indicated by the numeral 15 and. projecting upwardly through the usual slot which formed in the trigger plate 17. The trigger leaf is formed adjacent its reznyend with a notch 18 and pivoted to the leaf at its said end is a plate 19 which isformed with a lug 20, normally received in the, notch 18. A link BL is pivoted as at 22 to the" plate 1!) and the point of pivotal connection of the link with the plate is directly to the rear of the point of pivotal connection of the plate with. the trigger leaf15, the function of which construction will presently be fully evplaincd.
As is usual, the sears'arc formed with lugs, the lug ppon the left hand scar being indicated by the numeral 23} and the lug upon the right. hand scar being indicated by the numeral Ell this latter lug being reduced at its end as at zfrlo project through an opening 26 formed in th I link '31. it being understood that a pivotal cimncction between the said have its rearcnd slightly lowered, in this nianner pushing down on the link .21 and rocking the plate 19 rearwardly .to a slight degree, this movcmcnt ot' the plate ll) being had by reason of the rotation of the pivot 22 with respect to the pivot which connects the plato and the trigger leaf. The left. hand hunnnor is then rocked and its sear lug 23 is also movcd downwardly at its rear The trigger mechanism embodied in thelilg and the link is in this manner secnred hand halnn cr '11. the right hand sear 13 wilt it the link :21 which movenlentof the link will, of course, serve to lift the rear end of the right hand scar and in this n'ianner release the right hand hannner. The trigger is then released and the log 20 moved. to
position beneath the end of the seal lug whereupon another pull upon the trigger will serve to raise the said sea and release the left hand hammer.
\Vhat claimed. is:
l. in a single trigger firearm, the combination with the trigger and scars, of a. plate pivoted to the trigger leaf and formed with a lug for engagement beneath one scar, and a link pivoted to the plate and to the other sear.
Q. In a single trigger firearm, the (,(llllbllltttion with the trigger and hflttl'ii, of a member pivoted to the triggerlleatli and formed for engagement with one ofthe scare, and a link pivoted to the said member and to the other sear.
In a single trigger firearm, the combimr 3 tion with the trigger and scars, of a plate other sear, the pivot connecting the plate to the trigger leaf and the link to the plate beingso relatively located that the plate will he swung into position to bring its lug in advance of the same sear which it actuates upon raising of the link, and into position to bring its lug beneath the sear upon the link pivoted to the trigger leaf and fornled with a lug for engagement with one of the scars, and a, link pivoted to the plate and to the other Hear, the point of pivotal connection of the plate with the trigger leaf being located in advance of the point 0]? pivotal connection ol? the plate with the link.
it. In a single trigger firearm, the combination with the trigge and scars, of a member pernnmently connected to the trigger and movable, into engagement with one of the scars; and a separatemember permanently connecting the lll'b'hd'lllllttl member and the other sear.
T. in a single trigger firearm, the combination with the trigger and scars, of a, member iermanentlv connected to the tri 'er and C5D movable into engagement with one of the scars; and a permanent connection between said member and the other sear.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
