IMPROVEMENT IN STENCHQTRAPS.
Hrw-
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent a'nd making part of the same.
`constructed according to our invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to the stink-traps of waterclosets, wash-basins, sinks, &c. It is designed more especially for use in hotels, factories, and other buildings in which steam-engines or steam-heating apparatus are used, and where the exhaust steam discharged into the waste-pipe creates a backward pressure upon the trap, sometimes, with traps of the ordinary construction, forcing the foul air andother unwholesome euvia ofl the wastepipes and sewers tlirough the water contained inthe traps, and into the apartments ofthe building. The object of this invention is to obviate this evil; and
The invention consists in a novel construction of the trap, and the novel-arrangement of a valve therein, whereby back pressure, caused by theiexhaust steam, is prevented from acting against the water contained in the trap.
Referring to the accompanying drawings-.
A is the box or shell of the trap, having the usual induction and eduction-openings, and provided with diagonally-arranged partitions a al. Said partitions are joined'to the inner surface of' said shell, upon opposite sides of vthe inductionand eduction-openings,
and extending diagonally upward and downward,re
spectively, pass each .other in parallel lines,so asto form aftrap for the water while either vertically or horizontally arranged.
At a suitable point between these partitions ang-.is l l provided a valve-seat, b, throughwvhich the-waste passes.
This much of the apparatus is preferably constructed i o f cast-metal, and inV one piece, but might also beconstructed in various other ways. When castinonc piece, as here described, an'opening, c, is left in that side of the shell next to the valve-seat, for insertion.
of a valve, d.
This valve d operates upon a hinge, c, which is secured, by a screw or otherwise, to the partition a, so that it willopen readily to any downward pressure, but close when acted upon by'an upward or back pressure.
After the insertion ofthe valve, the opening c closed, by means of a cap, g. p What `we, claim as our invention, and desire'to' have secured by Letters Patent, is
The diagonally-arranged partition'saa, joined to the shell A, the part a descending below the level of the continuous pipe, so as to dip into the water held in the globular enlargement, and provided .with a valve-seat and valve, substantially as and for the pur'-l pose herein set forth. v JOSIAH S. HALEY.
