larly designed for cutting metal pipe such as is used for water and. gas mains; and the object of the invention is to provide a portable machine which can be readily applied to such a pipe, in situ if desired; is operated by.
power; is capable of cutting pipes oflarge diameter and of different sizes rapidly and accurately; and does not require any special skilled labor to operate it.
I will now describe the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings which represent a practical form of pipe cutting machine embodying the invention.
In said drawings-Figure 1 is an end elevation of the machine in operative position for cutting a pipe of large diameter. Fig. 2 isfa lan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view 0 1g. 1.
The machine comprises a portable base plate or frame 1 whichis provided at oppo site ends with legs or saddles 1* by which the frame can be firmly supported on top of'the pipe to be cut, the frame being placed on the V plpe at one side of the point where the cut is to be made. The curvatureof the recess on the under side of the saddles 1 is on such an arc that the frame will rest securely on the smallest pipe which the machine is adapted to cut. The saddles or legs 1 are preferably arranged in parallel pairs at the opposite ends of the frame 1, as shown, and may be cast integral with said frame or base plate. To the lower extremities of the saddles I are attached removable feet 2 which are pivoted between the extremities of'the saddles by bolts 2 and these feet are adapted to engage the surface of the pipe P as indicated in Fig. 1, and will automatically adjust themselves to the pipe and support the frame steadily thereon; The bearing surface of the feet 2 may be concaved to suit certain sizes of pipe; anddifferent feet may be used 5 for difierent sizes of pipe to give the frame a better bearing thereon; After being placed on the pipe in the desiredposition the frame is securely fastened thereto by means of chains 3 which are connected to bolts 3 extending through slots 1' in the frame, which slots are preferably formed in cylindric recesses'or pockets 1' at the sides of the plate, and the bolts are secured by means of nuts 3 tapped on the upper ends thereof; and
rocker washers 3 are interposed between the nuts and the bottoms of the recesses 1 as shown. The chains 3 are passed under the pipe and by tightening nuts 3 on bolts 5 the frame can be securely fastened to or upon the pipe in any desired position.
1 U on the frame 1 are mounted pillow bloc s U in which are journaled a crank shaft 4,1carrying a crank disk 4 having a crank pin 4* operatively connected to the cutter, as hereinafter explained. The shaft 4 is driven by a motor M on the frame 1. This motor is preferably a hydrocarbon engine, and suitable gearing is provided to reduce the speed of the motor in transmission to the shaft 4.
p As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the motor shaft 5 carries a fly-wheel 5 and a gear 5 which meshes with a gear 5 c on a shaft 5 d journaled in suitable bearings on the pillow blocks attached to frame 1; and shaft 5 carries a pinion 5 which meshes with a gear 4 on the shaft 4. In this way the motor M may be run at'high s eed while the shaft 4 will be rotated at sfbw speed but with great power. The particular arrangement of gearing for operating the crank shaft from the motor may be varied according to the power and speed of the motor employed, and the largest sizeof pipe which the machine is designed to cut.
The cutter, proper, comprises a rocker head having a stem 6 and a slotted base 6, extending at right angles to the stem, in the slots of which base are journaled steel cutters 6 which are adapted. to contact with the surface of the pipe. The stem 6 is pivotally connected to one end of a pitman 4 by a'bolt 4 which is connected at the other end to crank pin 4 so that when the shaft 4 is rotated the rocker-head 6 is vibrated back and forth by the pitman. To the ends of the rocker head base are connected ends of an endless chain cutter composed ofa series of intermediate links 7 and end links 7 each link 7 carries a wheel cutter 7 which projects beyond the inner side thereof so as to contact with the pipe; and each link 7 b also carries a wheel cutter 7 similar to cutter 7 The end links 7 are connected to bolts 7 which pass through openings in the ends of the rocker head 6 and are secured by nuts 7 rocker washers 7 being interposed between the nuts and the ends of the rocker head base as shown. This chain cutter is constructed substantially as shown and described in Patent #825,215 granted to me July 3, 1906, and therefore need not be further described herein.
In operating the machine, the frame 1 and motor M are mounted upon the pipe to be cut as indicated in Fig. l of the drawings, with the crank pin 4* located in the plane of the intended cut in the pipe; the pitman 4 being temporarily disconnected from the rocker head by removing the pivot bolt 4" which connects the pitman to the rocker head. The frame is securely fastened to the pipe by means of the chains 3 and bolts 3 as described; then the chain cutter is placed around the pipe, one or both ends of the chain being temporarily disconnected from the rocker-head by removing nuts 7 facilitating 1 lacing the chain around the pipe; then tlie shank of the rocker head is connected to the pitman 4 with the cutter wheels 6 bearing against the pipe at the line where the pipe is to be cut. One or more of the links 7 may be removed from the chain, or additional links 7 may be added thereto, as may be required in order to make the chain fit closely around the pipe, as indicated in Fig. 1. Then the bolts 7 are connected with the rocker head, as shown in Fig. 1, and the wheel cutters 6 7, 7", bear upon the surface of the pipe and are caused to bite the pipe closely by tightening the nuts 7 The motor is then started, and as the shaft 4 rotates the pitman 4* is reciprocated and the rocker-head will be oscillated; this causes the series of wheel cutters all around the pipe to move rapidly back and forth and channel and cut the pipe circumferentially. The chain cutter can be tightened, as required, during the cutting operation, by stopping the engine and tightening nuts 7 in this manner and by this means the largest pipe can be out quickly and cleanly at any point desired. Having described my invention what i. claim as new and desire to secure by vLetters Patent thereon is:
1. In a pipe cutting apparatus the combination of a portable frame adapted to be fastened to a pipe, a motor on said frame, a chain-cutter adapted to be placed around the pipe, and means for operating the cutter from said motor.
2. In a pipe cutting apparatus the combination of a frame adapted to be fastened to a pipe, a motor on said frame, a flexible chaincutter adapted to be placed around the pipe, and means operated by the motor for reciprocating the chain cutter when in position around the pipe.
3. In a machine for cutting large pipe, the combination of a portable frame adapted to be placed upon a pipe, a crank shaft on said frame, a motor for driving said crank shaft, and means for removably fastening said frame to the pipe; with a cutter, and connections between said cutter and the crank shaft for operating the cutter.
4:. In a machine for cutting large pipe, the combination of a portable fram adapted to be placed. upon a pipe; a crank shaft on said frame, a motor for driving said crank shaft,
and means for removably fastening said frame to the pi pc with a chain cutter adapted to encircle the pipe, and connections between said chain and. the crank shaft for reciprocatingsaid chain from the crank shaft.
5. In apparatus for cutting pipe of large diameter the combination of a clmin-cutter adapted to encircle a pipe, a rocker head connected with said chain-cutter, a portable motor, and detachable connections between the rocker-head and the motor.
6. In apparatus for cutting pipe of large diameter the combination of a chain adapted to encircle a pipe, a rocker head connected with said chain, a portable motor, means for detachably attaching the motor to the pipe, and detachable connections between the rocker head and the motor whereby the former is operated by the latter.
7. In apparatus for cutting large pipe, the combination of a frame, adjustable chains and bolts for clamping said frame to a pipe, and a motor mounted on said frame; with a chain-cutter adapted to encircle the pipe adjacent the frame, and means for operating said cutter from, the motor.
8. I11 apparatus for cutting large pipe the combination of a frame provided with feet adapted to fit upon a pipe, adjustable chains and bolts for clampingsaidframe on the pipe, and a motor mounted on said frame; with a chain-cutter adapted to encircle the pipe adjacent the frame, and means for reciprocating said cutter from the motor.
9. In apparatus for cutting large pipe, the combination of a frame adapted to fit upon a pipe, means for clamping said frame on the pipe, a motor mounted on said frame, a crank shaft on said frame, and reducing gearing between the motor and crank shaft; with a chain-cutter adapted to encircle the pipe adjacent the frame, and means for operating said cutter from the crank shaft.
10. In apparatus for cutting large ipe, the combination of a frame having sadd es on its ends whereby it may be supported on a pipe, a crank shaft mounted on said frame, a motor on said frame, and gearing between the motor and crank shaft; with a cutter adapted to surround the pipe, and means for operating said cutter from the crank shaft.

In apparatus for cutting large pipe, the combination of a frame, feet attached to said frame whereby it may be supported on apipe, a crank shaft mounted on said frame, a mo tor on said frame, and-gearing between the motor and crank shaft; with a rocker head, a pitman connecting the rocker head with the crank shaft, and acutter connected to said rocker head.
12. In apparatus for cutting large pipe the combination of a frame having detachable feet whereby it may be supported on a pipe, means for fastening it on a pipe, a crank shaft mounted on said frame, a motor on said frame, and gearing between the motor and crank shaft; with a chain-cutter adapted to surround the pipe, and means for operating said chain-cutter from the crank shaft.
13. In apparatus for cutting large pipe the combination of a frame provided W1th saddles adapted to rest upon a pipe, adjustable chains and bolts for c amping said frame on the pipe, a motor mounted on said frame, a crank shaft on said frame, and reducing gearing between the motor shaft and crank shaft; with the chain-cutter adapted to encircle the pipe adjacent the frame, and means for operating said cutter from the motor.
14. In apparatus for cutting large 1pipe, the combination of a frame having sadd es on its ends whereby it may be supported on the pipe, feet detachably attached to said saddles, a crank shaft mounted on said frame, a
motor on said frame, and gearing between the motor and crank shaft; with a rocker head, a pitman connecting the rocker head with the crank shaft, and a chain-cutter detachably connected to said rocker head and adapted to surround the pipe.
