ASSIGNOM TO l`. WESEL MAN UFAUTUBIN( COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.,
RE GISTER-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application led September 12, 1903. Serial 150,452,789.
1b all whom, 'it may concern Be it known that l, I-`oLnn\Vi'|.L1.i.\i Wes- 'roN, a citizen of the United States, and a res-ident ot' the borough ot' Brooclyn oic the city of New York, in the State of N ew York, have invented certainoiew and useful :Iniproveniente in Register-Hooks, ot which'thc following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The rinvention relates to what are known the printii art as register hooks which are emp oyed in multiple-color and register -Wo'rk for the purpose of securing ten y,the
and iidjiisting electrotype plates and ther like in the make-u. 0r form of which they constitute a part. nsiich work, it is a matter of no small ditliculty, With the ordinary hooks which the rinter has at hand, tao fas- Y lates in t form in the precise position which they should occupy to bring the impression in the exact' place required, any slight variation of a plate to one side or .the other absolutely spoiling the effect ofthe printing. It is obviously necessary 'for the printer to have some means for edecting a proper adjustment of the plates in 'theform and it is extremely desirable that these means be such that the adjustments can be made with great accuracy and without involving several trials or any great expenditure of time upon the part of the printer.
One of the objects of the present invention has been to provide a register hook through which this end could be attained.
Another object of theI invention has been to provide ,a hook ofthis character withas 't'ew component parts as possible, or in other words to provide a ho'k which shall not be complicated in its structure, and therefore liable t'o get out of order, or expensive toI make. v
Still another object of the invention is to provide a hook in which different forms of r clampingr members may be employed whereby the clan'iping members are interchangeable and when broken or injured may be rc.- placcd by others of the .saine kind or ot' a different kind.
ln the drawings where a practical einbodinient ot' the invention has been illustrated, l `igure 1 is'a View in longitudinal central section, the end of the tool for adjustin the clamp being shown in elevation just a ove the same. Fig. 2 is a View in transverse section, showing the tool in operative position.x
I Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly broken away for' convenience in illust-rating, and, Fig. fi is av sectional lview and Fig. 5 an end view of a .different form .of clanipii'igmember from `that illustrated in Figs. l to 3.
rThe present hook belongs to that type of register hook in which thtA means engaging the clamping member in order to advance or retract the saine is movable with said meinber.V
As shown in the drawings, the clamping member a, which is provided with a jaw o formed integral therewith for the purpose of directly engaging the plate to be fastened, is
provided with a` screw f' to advance the same,-
such screw being provided with bearings ai at, cach end thereof which are suitably ]ournaled' in the body of the clamping i'nen'iber.`
The base oi the hook isin the torni cfa yoke and the side members e of the base are provided internally with broken portions of a thread which is of a suitable size for the screw c to engage. Thus, the latter, as will be seen, engages the base at each side and is advanced or retracted in the direction of its iaxis.`
Heretofore in register hooks of the present type screws have been provided, having their axes oblique or normal to the direction of travel, and this has generally required the interposition of intermediate gears or screws between suchV screws and the bases of the' l The present construction enables hooks. such gears and the like to be dispensed With and provides a most satisfactory engagement between the clamping member and base. Moreover,` in accordance with the present construction, by retracting the clamp sufficiently, it. may be removed entirely from the base at thciopen end thereof betweentlie side members e, and another clamping meinber may be inserted, either of the same kind or of a different kind.
The clamping member illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive is substantially I-shape in cross section (Fig. 2) being extended at the top and bottom toward the sides and thusy being adapted t0 travel upon the uppcr and under sides of the side members e of the base. This clamping member is provided with a set of teeth f' which constitute a sort of bevel gear upon the periphery ci its rear face and this gear is adapted to be engaged vby another bevel gear formed u on the end of a tool g. For thepurpose o permitting this engagement, tbeclamping member is oise adjustment of a .plate may be had.
f section, but instead of providin` a bearing-d serted for the purpose of rotating the screw.
The clampngmember shown in' Figs 4 and 5 is also substantially I-,shape 1n cross' at both-the front and the rear o? the .screw c,
it is supported entirely by the bearing d' at the front end thereof. And instead of provding teeth u 'on the rear face thereof, the latter is provi ed with' a plurality of radial grooves fthrough which a tool g such as is illustrated'in Flg. 5, is adapted to be in- It will be obvious that such a clamping mem ber may be provided lin ythe place of the clamping member'shown inFi l to 3 and that other clamping members tsfiering from those shown in thpresent 'drawing may also be employed in the improved hook, .More` over, other departures may be made from the embodiment of the invention as here shown 30 and described Without avoiding the spirit of the invention.
I claim as my invent-ion 1. A register hook comprisin shaped base havin throughout, and a c amp, said clamp being substantially I-.shaped in cross section and thus ada ted to travel upon the under and up r si es of the side members of the yoho a yokean havin a propellin screw journaled in ,f
the vertica member oft 1e clamp and adapted to engage the side members ot' the yoke.
` 2. A reglster hook comprising a base, and
a clamp movable therein and embodying a propelling screw provided with a bevel gear upon one of its faces adapted to fit a corresponding bevel gear upon a tool, the said c amp being :formed with a hole into which the tool is inserted and through which a sideV mem ers solid 35 bearing for the tool is provided as it is ro tated to move the clamp.
