SIGN BOARD Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, AUeUsTns B. WAR- FIELI),21 citizen of the United States, Captain, 5th Field Artillery, United States Army, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sign Boards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it-appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates broadly to signboard constructions, but inasmuch as certain advantages characteristic of the invention prominently appear in its embodiment in a sign-board adapted to be collapsed and stored away and whenin use adjusted into stable position, it will be conducive to clearness to describe it in such relation.
In general, my object is to provide a signboard of the nature disclosed which from a utilitarian, standpoint will be possessed of a high degree of efficiency and good wearing qualities, and which,"strueturally considered, would be of the greatest possible simplicity, being composed of but few parts, all adapted to be made at a minimum of cost, and individually so formed as to be capable of being manufactured in large quantities of a uni form size and quality.
Other objects will be in part obvious from the annexed drawings and in part pointed out hereinafter.
With this and other ends in view this invention accordingly consists'in the features of construction, combination of parts, and arrangement of elements which will be exemplified in the embodiment hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In order that this invention may be more fully understood and made comprehensible to others skilled in its relating arts, drawings illustrating a convenient manner of carrying out the same are appended as part of this disclosure, and, while the controlling principles of the invention may be otherwise employed by modifications obviously deducible from the disclosure and falling within the intended scope of the claims, the herein shown embodiment is that which will ordinarily be employed in practice.

Continuing now by the way of a more detailed description,1naking such occasional reference to the accompanying drawings as may promote a more complete disclosure, it may be stated that my board comprises in the main a front member A, which provides a suitable surface for displaying the matter to be advertised, and a rear or opposite sec tion B which is hinged to the aforesaid section A at its contiguous upper end and which may also provide a displaying load. Preferably the auxiliary riser board will extend upwardly from the apex formed by the jointure of sections A and B, in the manner illustrated by the drawings.
I :have so constructed and designed my sign-board as to make use of building materials of ordinary commerce, without necessitating any. involved designs or dificult constructions of special parts. Thus, I have employed a suitable form and shape of channel iron as a basis for the skeleton frame work of my sign-board, and Where needed, have filled in open spaces with wooden panels of an inex oensive character. This paneling is held in p ace at its end by reason of fitting inthe channel bars at the sides of the sign-board, these channel bars forming seatinggrooves, so to speak. To prevent any edgewise slipping of the boards, I may also employ a number of small screws entering the edges of the boards through the holes 17 through the bottom of the channel 1rons.
In forming the ends of the section indicated by A, I have arranged in parallel relationship a pair of spaced channel irons l and 2. These channel irons form the opposite sides or molds of the board and have their open grooves arranged face to face so that they may form a means for securely holding boards 3 in place. These channel irons may if desired, have a portion thereof at their feet turned outwardly as indicated by a and 5, so as to provide a more secure bearing surface.
To provide for bracing the two lower ends of the channel bars 1 and 2 against separation or'approach, an iron brace 5 may be extended from side to side and have its ends arranged to enter the channels of the channel bars and be riveted thereto. In like manner, a similar brace G is provided adjacent the upper ends of the side channel bars, thus securing the sign-board, or section thereof, in place between the side channel bars.
To provide for a surmounting or auxiliary board, I have secured channel bar extensions 7 and 8 to the upper ends of the channel bars 1. and 2 respectively. These extensions have riveted thereto the connecting links 9 and 10, which links are in turn removably secured to the upper ends of the side channel bars 1 and 2, preferably by arranging the hinge-rod 13 so as to pass through an aperture in each of said links, thus allow ing the auxiliary board to be removed at will. Inasmuch as the auxiliary sign-board will preferably assume a substantially vertical position while the two lower members will be arranged in slanting relation to form an A as it were, the connecting pieces 9 and 10 may be bent at an angle of approximately 20 degrees;
The rear or complementary section B is in the main constructed along lines similar to those employed in forming the other sec tion A, but at their upper ends they are provided with laterally extending wings 11 and 12, which are preferably secured in place by rivets. These wings are also provided near their extremities with suitable apertures adapted to accommodate the hinge rod 13 which extends across the upper ends, as shown by Fig. 1. It will be observed that'this arrangement enables the two sec tions A and B to be swung together without cliflicult-y.
As means for connecting together and maintaining the desired relationship between the complementary sections A and B, I may make use of brace 14, which may be hinged at 15 to sectionB and may have a detachable connection 16, as indicated by Fig. 6-, with section A.
The various braces5f, 6, 14;, etc., above described will preferably be provided with a hinge such as that indicated by 18 on Fig. 2, which hinge may be arranged approxi mately midway the ends, so as to enable such braces to be folded and thus reduced in length for compactness in packing.
It will thus be perceived that I have de;
vised a means well adapted to attain the various objects and ends of this invention, and that as a result a sign-board has been produced which is not only of an exceedingly simple construction, but one which-is well adapted for usage, such as those arising in connection with recruiting and other branches of the military service, as well as for any use whatever where a sign-board is used for sidewalk advertising. The board is capable of being taken to pieces and packed in small places, and when assembled is not only neat in appearance, but is strong and serviceable and it is particularly adapted for being iminufactured at a small cost in very large quantities.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A signboard of the nature disclosed comprising, in combination, a pair of frames each having upright side members, means for hinging together the upper extremities of said frames, auxiliary supporting means removably secured to said hinging means and extending upwardly therefrom, said supporting means comprising a pair of grooved members spaced from one another, the grooved portions of said members being arranged face to face to form a seat for a panel, and means for maintaining said frames in a predetermined angular relationship.
2. A signboard of the nature disclosed comprising in combination, a frame consisting of a pair of oppositely disposed channel bars arranged face to face with respect to their grooved edges, one or more panels hav ing their ends seated in the facing grooves of said channel bars to form a display board, collapsible cross braces between said side channel bars adapted to maintain the same in a rigid relationship, a short channel bar ren'iovably secured in angular relation to each of said side bars and extending upwardly from the extremity thereof, and means for supporting the aforesaid parts.
3. A signboard of the nature disclosed comprising in combination, a pair of frames each comprising two opposite upright side members formed of channel bars, the grooved portions of said bars being arranged face to face to form a seat for an inserted panel, collapsible cross braees at the uppe and lower ends of each frame, remov- .avmiiiaimummmuwiuuunw able means for hinging together the upper extremities of said frames, and spacing bars for maintaining said hinged frames in a predetermined angular relationship.
4. A signboard of the nature disclosed comprising in combination, a pair of frames having upright side members formed of channel bars having their grooved edges arranged face to face, the one frame having at its upper extremity laterally extending hinge pieces, a removable hinge mounted adjacent the upper end. of the other frame and pivoted at its extremities to said hinge pieces, auxiliary board supporting means removably mounted upon said-hinge, and releasable spacing bars for maintaining said frames in a predetermined angular relationship.
5. A signboard of the nature disclosed comprising in combination, a pair of frames 20 means for hinging said frames together, and 2 side bars extending upwardly from one of said frames from said point of hinge, said side bars being removably secured at an 0btuse angle to said last mentioned frame.
