HANDCUFF-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. 7001), a
of Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a View, similar to Fig. 2,taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
citizen of the United States of America, in the drawings forming a part of this and residing at Bloomfield, in the county of 5 application, I have shown a handcutl' com- Essex and State of New Jersey, have inprising the usual socket member a and 5e vented certain new and useful Improveratchet member I) pivotally joined at c and ments in Handcufi-Locks, of which the foli provided with a swivel c for the chain lowing is a specification, such as will enable 5 which joins a pair of the handcuffs, said those skilled in the art to which it appertains member a having an enlarged lock chamber tomake and use the same. 1 a covered by a cover a and into which the 5 This invention relates to handcufis and member Z) passes in the usual manner, said the object thereof is to provide a look there member being provided with teeth Z2 preffOr which may be made inoperative when erably arranged in two parallel and indedesired so that the handcuff may be carried pendent lines with a channel between them, in a closed position without being locked as is clearly shown in the drawings. 79 and which may be quickly and positively The cover a is provided with a key hole locked without the use of a key when in this a about a key post a secured in the champosition; a. further object being to provide her a and upon which a key a rotates, said the said handcuff with the usual spring lock key being of the usual leaf variety, andsaid for instant use from an open position and lock chamber is also provided with oppowhich provides independent locking devices whereby either one may be operative if the other should become inoperative; a further object being to provide a lock for handcuffs in which the key may be turned in either direction, before, during, or after the un locking movement, without danger of breakage of either the key or the look; a further object being to provide means whereby the said lock cannot be opened without a key, either by an exterior blow or by the insertion of blades, wires or the like and also to provide means whereby the handcuff cannot be accidentally locked when in an unlocked and closed position and a still further obect being to provide a handculf which is simple in construction and use, which is positive in action, which is composed of few parts and cannot therefore readily get out of order and in which the key acts upon the locking devices, exteriorly thereof, and not therethrough, as is usual.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of a handcuif, constructed according to my invention, in a closed position; Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the lock mechanism, on the line 22 of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 is a similar view, with the parts in a different position; Fig. l is a sectional plan View taken on the line H sitely arranged slots 4 and with channels or grooves a at said slots and the use of which will be pointed out.
Arranged centrally of the lock chamber a is a shaft or post (Z upon which are rotaso tably mounted two locking pawls (Z and which engage corresponding rows of ratchet teeth 6 in the use of the device, each of said pawls having an arm (Z in which is secured a spring (1*, and with a pointed or inclined 8 projection (Z extending backwardly from the pawl shoe or nose, the arms (Z being adapted to strike against the key post a when the handcuff is in an open position but being forced away therefrom upon the insertion of a key into the lock and rotation thereof, the leaf member of the said key engaging both the arms of both pawls and giving a movement thereto in accordance with the necessar Y movement of the nose of said pawls to clear the teeth 6 Also rotatably mounted upon the post (Z, between the pawls (Z is a collar c provided with an arm 6 corresponding to the arms d, and with a projection c in all respects similar to those, (Z described, said collar being also provided with a plate spring 6 bearing against a pin 6 whereby the arm a is normally held against the key post a.
Extending entirely across the lock chamber a and movable in the slots is a block or latch f having an inclined edge corresponding to and bearing against the inclined projections (Z and 0, the springs (Z being so bent as to force the latch f toward It will be obvious that various changes in and modifications of the form of construction shown and described may be made 60 within the following claims and,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- 1.. A handcuff, comprising a ratchet mem- 65 her, a socket member for the reception thereof, a locking device in said socket member for normal engagement with said ratchet the pawls and also to force the said pawls l into engagement with the ratchet member?) l and the arms d against the key post a and l permitting suflicient movement of the said I 5 pawls to slide over the teeth 6 thereby prol ducing the spring lock effect of the usual 1 handcufi' but if reater movement be given the pawls, by means of the key a, the projections (Z and 6 pass the edge of the latch i a; 10 f and said latch is forced thereover by the springs (Z into the position shown in Fig. l
3, thereby holding the pawls out of engage- 1 member, a key for breaking said engagement, ment with the teeth b and the member I) 1 means for maintaining said disengagement 70 may be freely moved and the handcuff closed 4 when so broken and means for preventing but not locked. When the handcuff is in the action of said maintaining means when this condition and it is desired to lock the i said .locking device is operated otherwise same, all that is necessary is to place the than by said key. 7 thumb and finger upon opposite ends of the t 2. A handcuff, comprising a ratchet mem 75 latch f and withdraw the same from the l her, a socket member for the reception pawls and which are then free to be moved thereof, a pawl in said socket member in to their locking positions, shown in Fig. 2, normal engagement with said ratchet memby the springs (Z and the device is locked her, a key adapted to bear exteriorly on said and cannot be opened without the key, and it pawl to disengage the same, a latch for 80 will be observed that, when the handcuff is maintaining said disengagement, and a l l V locked, one of the teeth completely closes spring forcing said pawl into engagement the entrance to the socket member a and with said ratchet member and forcing said the latch f, as shown in Fig. i, is preferably latch against said pawl. l provlded with small plates which serve as 3. A handcuft, comprising a ratchet mem- 85 covers for the slots a to prevent the inserber, a socket member a pawl in said socket tion of wires or the like in order to open the member in normal engagement with said handcuff, said slot covers not being desigratchet member, a key adapted-to bear on nated by reference characters as they are said paw to'disengage the same, a latch for very small and to prevent confusion. maintaining said disengagement and a spring 90 The function of the collar 0 and consecured to said pawl and bearing upon said nected parts, is to prevent opening the handlatch and serving to force said pawl against cuff by means of exterior blows or sudden said, ratchet and said latch against said movements tendlng to dlslodge the pawls pawl. out of their engagement w1th the ratchet 4. A handcuff, comprising a ratchet mem; 95 teeth which is possible and frequently occurs her, a socket member a pawl in said socket 40 in the forms of construction now in use but, member in normal engagement with said because of the lightness of the said collar l ratchet member, a key for breaking said en and the tendency of the spring e* to main- 1 gagement, a latch for maintaining said distain the said collar in its normal position, engagement and a spring actuated device 100 if the latch f be drawn backwardly and the bearing against said latch and preventing pawls be temporarily dislodged, the procomplete inward movement thereof to main-' jcction .6 not having been moved, prevents tain said pawl in a disengaged position when the latch from passing into the position, the latter is moved otherwise than by said with relation to the pawls, shown in Fig. 3, key. 105 to hold the pawls out of locking position, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as and said pawls immediately pass into their my invention I have signed my name in preslocking positions again as the movement ence of the subscribing witnesses this 18th thereof is for but an infinitesimal period of day of June 1908.
