This invention relates to interna-l combuef tion engines of the twoynle t pe in which iidisplacer cylinder` is employe and it; consists of .tl1e improved construction li'ereiiiafter s cied whereby the construction is 16 sii'npliil and the number ofpnrls reduced,

The back end of the piston Za may be fitted with a deflector fot diverting the'air and gaseous mixture'liowing out of the passage toward the back end of the working' cylinder. The induction pipe p from the carbureter l leads into the closed end of the displacer cylinder c and is fitted with an automatic non-return valve j. The piston f of the displacer cylinder is coupled to thecrankpin g1 of the crank-shaft g b a connecting rod /L in the usual manner. he two crankshafts c and g are geared together by spur wheels m and 'n of equal size so that they ro- 'tate et the same speed in opposite directions and said wheels are so meshed that the piston f of the dis lacer cylinder is moving on its suction stro (e during the Whole of the time the passage In is open to the atmosphere through the front end of the working cylinder, so that during the latter part of the said suction stroke air is drawn into the displacer cylinder through the passage la, the e linder a,the crank-chamber l, and hole o, the inlet Valve j closing immediately the vacuum in the cylinder is destroyed by the opening of the assage Itto the atmosphere. A stratum of air is' thereby obtained in the displacer cylinder above the gaseous mixture which .air 1s first discharged into the working cylinder which thus scavenges 1t in advance of the introduction of the gaseous mixture. The valve y may be mechanically operated without departing from the spirit und scope of m invention.
The cycle o operation is as follows:-A Comxnencin with the working stroke of the working cy inder, the piston of said cylinder first closes the passage between the two cylinders to the front end o f the'worklng cylinder and then as it approaches the end of its working stroke it first uncovers the exhaust ort and subsequently opens the assage etwccn the two cVlinders to the liack end of the working cylinder. On the return stroke of the piston of the working c linder it first closes the passa e, between tie two cylinders, next closes t e exhaust port, and as it reaches the end of said stroke 1t opens the passage between the two c hnd'ers to the atmosphere through the ront end 'of the working cylinder. At the end of the return stroke and the commencement of the working stroke of the piston of the working cylinder the piston of the d lsplaeer cylinder is reachm the end of its outer or suction stroke un draws alr lnto the displaeer cylinder through the front end ot' the working cylinder until the port or passage between the two cylinders is closed by the piston o'l the working cylinder. During tluI remainder ol the working lstroke of the piston of the working cylinder the pistou ot the displaeer cylinder-'is making its return or discharge stroke which operates to compress the gaseous nlxture and the air .until the passage between the two cylinders is opened by the piston of the working cylinder which allows first' the air und then the gaseous mixture to ilow into the working cylinder. The air operates to sca-venge the said cylinder and passes out b the exhaust port until said port is closed y the piston of the working cylinder on its return stroke. During the return stroke of thepiston of the working cylinder when the* assage lbetween the two cylinders is closed tlie piston of the displacer cylinder is on its suction stroke drawing in gaseous mixture through the inlet pipe o1' passage u'ntil said piston opens the 'passage between the two cylinders and puts the displacer cylinder into communication with the atmosphere throu h the front end ofthe working cylinder w en the inlet valve closes and air only is drawn into the displacer eyl'nder as before described;
That l claim as my invention and desire lo Secure by Letters stent is '.lhe combination 1n an internal combustion engine of the two-'cycle t pe, of a. working cylinder the front end ofy which iso en to the'atmosphere, a piston in said cylin er an exhaust port located at the forward en of said cylinder so as to be oiened by the piston as it ap roaches the en of its Working stroke, a replacer cylinder, a. piston in said cylinder, a single port or passage between the dis lacer and Working cylinders,
