SHEET-ME TAL-l? No. 929,@2e.
Application filed August 22,
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be itI known that l, JOAH Bnoonnn, ot' Allhiladelphia. in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful ,improvements in `eheet Metal Paneled Structures, whereof the following a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a paneled structure, eomijirsing rails, Stiles, and panels made of sheet metal, and relates more particularly to the method otl interlocking the panels with the rails and'stiles, and also the method of interlocking the rails to the stiles. v
l'have shown and will describe my' invert tion as applied to an ordinary two paneled door, ity being understood that the Scope o't the invention. is not thus limited. but. may be extended to any panele'tl structure.
lo the accompanying drawings,` Figure is an elevation ot a two paneled door erabodyi-ng` my invention. ,Fig H, shows in perspective a portion oa rail, stile, and panel embodying my invention, and separated from each other so as to more clearly illustrate the method ot' interlocking. Fig. l l l, is a partial horizontal section along the lme lll, lll, in Fig'. l.
rThe door shown in Fig. l, comprises two panels l, l, two Stiles 2, 2, and three rails ri'espectively, the top rail Ll, the middle rail 5. and the bottom rail t5. The construction oit these parts will be more evident upon reference to lfigi. ll'. where ity will he seen that `the panel l, is composed of two surface layers ot sheet metal l0, lONvith an intervening thicker layer l1, ot'i'leadening .inaterial. such as wood. composition board, asbestos lumber, or other suitable material. The intervening layer ll, does not reach to the margin ot the surface sheets, than att'ordingh a space within which the overhanging edges ot the sheets are 'folded in upon themselves, and outv again, so as to produce sig-meid ltexures, 7, 7, with projecting contiguous tongues l2, l2. v
The rails/t5. are preferaliily formed by bending' a single piece oft' sheet metal to form the edge. sides and also the two molding:l lil. '13, with tivo slightly separated parallel .tlanges il, 14. The stile Q, is similarly Specification of .Lettere Patent.

formed. rlhese parts may be hollowv or may leontain deadening or reproot'ing material.
ln uniting the panel to the rail or to the stile, the llanges let., lat., el the rail or stile enter the tleXures 7, i", olli the panel, at the same time, receivingl the tongues l2, l2, ot the panel between themselves. This more clearly seen in Fig. lll, .vherel it will be oh served that by reason of the reception oit the flanges within the tieiiures ot the panel, there is a spaee around the edges oit the panel where it is built` up of eight parallel layers of sheetv metal, made up ot three thicknesses ot each surtacesheetof the panel and tivo langes. The thickness et' the interY iediate board ot the panels is suoli as to eorrespend to the thickness of the six interino ln this way the edge oi' the panel becomes a rei-y strong laminated structure sti-engthenH ing the entire door. andat the same time atlording a suitable. supporting means :tor the rivets l5 15, by which these parts secured at intervals, and by which the flanges ot' the rails and stiles are retained Within their position within the tlexures et the paneling surfares, atlording an exceed ingly stronl union between the two.
'lhe union of the rail to the stile at the tornei of the door is an overlapping one, as shoyvn in Fig. Il, with the interposition of a strengthening trough-shaped sheet metal piece 1S, riveted interiorly to the bottom ot the rail, iind irojecting beyond ity at' the ends,.so as to he. reeeived between the projerting sides ot the stile to Ywhich it is tirmly riveted.
The structure thus described is one of very greaty strength, lightness and simplicity. lt` i? very easily pnt ogether and eoniprises streitethoning elements at the :ooints vrli most needed. lspeeial1 i val e is the port given b" the l .nated .,treligtli. masses -which are torn'ied around the edges ot each f the panels where its sheet,- metal parts interlock with and are riveted to those of the rails or Stiles.
Having thus described my invention., l claim:
l. ln a paneled sheet metal structure, a panel comprising two surface. sheets, the edges ot' which are :folded in and out in the hemselv es:
of the panel re/veviug it tongue betweel'i themiselves, unlt'ed by rlvets paesmg through he lanlmut'ed structure composed of the form of a sigmod exul'e, to form a central l tongue; and n sheet metal stile or rail provided wvth-feges which enter the fiexure of the panelrreceving iteA tongue between A l d In tesimony whereof, I Feverv hereunto 2. In a paneled sheet metal structure, a signed my name, :1t Philadelphia, Pennsylpanel omprisng two surface sheets the Vania, this twentyrst day of August, 1908. edges of which areiolded in and out in the JAOAH BROGDEN. form a sgmod fie'xure, to form a central tongue; andarsheet metal stile 01' rail provided with flanges which enter the exure Witnesses JOHN W7: VATKINS, JAMES H.
