Description
T. M. QUISENBERRY. SKIRT REGULATOR APYLIUATION IILED SEPT. 2. 1908;
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
W4 fmesoeo ANDREW n. GRAHAM c0. PHOYO-UMOGRA TANDY M. QUISENBERRY, OF WINCHESTER, KENTUCKY.
SKIRT-BE GULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Application filed September 2, 1908. Serial No. 451,424.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TANDY M. QUrsnN- BERRY, citizen of the United States, residing at /Vinchester, in the county of Clark and State of Kentucky, have invented certain a make and use the same.
This invention relates to skirt-regulators, or apparatus for use, by dress-makers to determine the proper height at which the hem of a ladys skirt should hang; such apparatus comprising, in general terms, a stand or platform provided with an adjustable band or ring which is adapted to be raised or lowered and serves as a gage for marking the bottom or hem of a skirt while fitted on a person standing upon the platform.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of such apparatus, and to provide a simpler, more practicable and more convenient skirt regulator of the character described than. has been heretofore devised.
The invention will hereinafter be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings,which form a part of this specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the ap ended claims.
In said drawings, wherein corresponding parts in the different figures are designated by the same reference symbols: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved skirt-regulator, with parts broken away to disclose the adjusting mechanism for the measuring band. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central vertical sectional View, showing the band in lowered position and indicating its raised position by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of one of the shaft bearings.
Referring to the drawings, in which a preferred embodiment of my invention is repre sented, the letter a denotes a circular stand or platform, mounted on short supporting legs which bring the top of the stand to the convenient height of an ordinary step above the floor. Loosely encircling the stand or platform, and adapted to be adjusted vertically for several inches above the top sur face thereof, is a hoop or band 6, which serves as the gage for determiningthe height at which the hem of the skirt is to be made. Said band I) is or may be provided with an outstanding bead or projection c, which affords a protruding edge upon which the skirt can be pressed and creased, or marked with any suitable material such as a piece of tailors chalk. When in its lowered position, the said band b rests on a number of lugs or pins (Z provided about the circumference of the top of the stand. For elevating and lowering the band b, said band is mounted at a plurality of points about its circumference on standards e, a, rising from horizontal arms f which extend under the platform from a common center, where they are mounted on theupper end of a vertically disposed center post g. Said post 9 is slidably fitted or movably arranged in a tubeor cylinder h which is rigidly affixed to and suspended from the bottom of the platform a 'y means of a number of brackets or braces 71.
While a preferred construction is shown in the drawings, the tube or cylinder b may be constructed in any suitable manner, and rigidly supported by any other appropriate means. The said post 9 is provided with a rack j, which is engaged by a pinion 75 working through a slot or opening therefor, in the cylinder h. The said pinion l: is mounted on a shaft Z, through which. it is operated by means of a crank m. Said shaft Z is shown j ournaled in bearings a mounted on the opposite rungs 0 of the stand. The bearings 92 as a matter of convenience but not of necessity, are adjustably secured in position; and to this end they may be provided with clamps p as shown in detail in Fig. 3. One of said bearings is provided with a set-screw g, operable to hold the shaft Z against rotation, thereby locking the post 9 against movement, and thus holding the gage or band I) in any determined position, or any other appropriate device may be substituted to fix the gage in its various positions.
At one side of the platform a there is provided a socketed bracket 7 which is adapted to support a staffs, which the person who is being fitted may hold, for support, while standing upon the stool.
In operating the device, after the lady be ing fitted has mounted the stand, the gageband I) is. raised to the desired height, by turning the crank m, and is then fixed in such position by means of the set-screw g. This places the bead c on the band I) at the desired height above and parallel to the top of the stand, so that a skirt pressed and marked against the head will, when made according to the markings, hang evenly at all points shots the ground, and wili also iiaitrtheexact measurement or leugthjdesired, "without the usual trouble accompanying the ordinary "the scope of my invention' it v V It wili' be observed that the devioe is sim- ,ple in construction and'convenieut and 1311210- *tioabie in operation. The workiug psrts are iew in number, and of such construction and arrangement as not to be easily disofdered or broken. The whole movable portion is supported on the oentralipost, so that there isno' 1mb1htyof derangement or *Lmevenworku g as might be the case its plurality of e1evsting means were employed,
[Having thus described my invention; what I claim ELHCi CiGSiI G to secure by Letters Patout is: v i
