MEANS FOR .INTRODUCNG FEED-WATER'INTO S'JIEHVLB(IXILERS.
Specification oi? Letters Patent.
meenten neg. e, ieee.
Application tiled March 6, 1908. Serial No. 419,449.
To all wiomit may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W.SnDDoN, a citizen ol' the United States, residing at Proctor, in the county/oi' St. Louis and State ol" ltlinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Means l'or Introducing FeedJ/vlater into Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for introducing 'feed Water into steam boilers, particularly those boilers known as tubular or flue boilers, its object being to introduce the feed Water into the boiler in such way as to avoid sudden, local or lnatnialv change in. the temperature oil the water already in the boiler or ol the iiues.
'When leed Water is injected into a tubular boiler'at the bottorn,'or at the sides of the iiues, or in fact at any point below the water/ line, the feed Water, being colder and therefore heavier than the boiler water, will sink to the bottom of the boiler and llow toward the' tire box. The sudden and considerable change in the temperature ol'g the water about the ilues will cause the ilues to contract and Work in the flue sheets and causo leakage at the joints. To overcome those objections I have devised means for dis` charging the feed water into the steam space of the boiler so that it will become highly heated and partly or wholly vaporiiied before mingling With'the Water inftbe boiler. J,
Moreparticularly the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. n V
ln the accompanying drawingsli'orming part of this specification, Figure lis a cross section through the upper portion-of a horizontal tubular boiler showing the present improvement applied thereto'; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a fragment of the feed waterpipe and discharge nozzle, with the check valve in elevation, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view oi the discharge nozzle and a fravrnent of the boiler shell.
ln the traWings A represents the shell of a horizontal tubhllr boiler, B the fines 'and C l the check valve secured to the bracket 2 u on the side of the boiler. The check valve as pipe connection with a feed` Water injector '(notshoxvn). Lpading'from the check valve into the boiler is a pipe 3 having a discharge `space 5 of the boiler.
sion of the feed Water pipe 3.
i l nozzle or bulb 4 discharginlT into the steam in orter that the leed Water may be discharged Well into the interior ot the boiler, the nozzle is ptgferably carried some distance into thesteai space and positioned as low down therein as posse ble,` that is at the normal Water lin(` ottho .boiler water 6.
in order that the i'eod Watt-r may be spread or sprayed into tho steam space in jets, more or less fino, the bulb or nozzle 4 is closed' at the end but 'formed along its upper side `with a nuinborol! line openings or periorations 7, which may be of any shape or size, but are preferably small as shown. in vthe drawings, and ot coursraopcninto the steam space above the Watordivtie, In the form here shown the bulb or nozzllfels in the form of a pipe constituting an extenlt closed at the end by a closure or plug S, and is partiallyv immersed in the Water. It will be observed, however, that none oi' the poriorations are in the underside of the pipoor below tho Water line.
In the drawings are shown two bulbs or nozzles arranged upon opposite sides ot thc boiler, but, while i prefer this arrangement,
l do not Wishto limit inyselfto the .number or position of the bulbs except oi" course that they must discharge into the steam space of theboilcr.
t Thus bythe use ot' the construction described theteed Water will be discharged, and/preferably sprayed, into theinterior of the steam space, Where it-Will minffle with the heatedl steam and become highly heater4 and Wholly or partly vaporized before it mingles With the Water in the boiler. Thus the feed Water Will be introduced into the boiler Without cooling the boiler Water suddenly, or locally, if at all,- thereby avoiding the sudden contraction oi the lines ducl to the introduction of the colder feed Water into the heated Water in the boiler.
I claim as my invention: I
in a steam boiler, the combinationl With the shell thereof' having an opening, and a `bracket arranged abept. said opening, ot a check valve, a ieedwater. pipe carried by said check valve and supported thereby Within the bracket, whereby to bo removed bodily With saidvalve when the latter is rcn moved from said bracket, ,said feed-Water lil() ipe projecting. into the steam space ofthe i In testimony whereof I affix my signetum` oiler and havlng its finlller end closed, the in presence of two Witnesses. up er portion only o t e feed-Water pi e belllg perforated to yspray the feedwvater Jtn CHARLES W'SEDDON 5 an upwardr'wd'rectioh into the steam space, Witnesses:
andmeans for connecting the check valve I ARTHUR P. LOTHROP, to said bracket. A HATTIE SMITH.
