ravir Ii ST CHARLES S. MCNEW, OF PINE BLUFF, ARKANSAS.
GRASS-CLIPPER.
To all whom it mez/ 1,1 concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns S. MCNEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grass-Clippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a grass-clipper, and consists of parts substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings.
In manufacturing my invention I do not confine myself to any particular length, width or thickness, nor do I confine myself to any .particular material out of which the parts may be made. I may press the toothplates and all parts out of plate-steel, or of other suitable material.
My invention is chiefly for the purpose of cutting grass around trees, stumps, flowers in the corners of fences, or other places where a large cutter cannot be used.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, is a top-plan view of my invention. Fig. 2, is a top plan view of the tooth-plates, the eccentric lever, part of the handle broken away, and the rigid arm partly broken away, the top plate removed. Fig. 3, is a face view of the top tooth-plate. Fig. 4, is a cross sectional view of Fig. 2, on the line 4, 4. Fig. 5, is a bottom plan view of the topplate. Fig. 6, is a top plan view of a lever having an eccentric head, part ol' the handle broken away.
My invention is described as followsz The numeral l, represents the lower toothplate 2, the cutting-teeth. Said tooth-plate is provided near its rear edge with a square perforation 3, (see Fig. 4) and on its upper face and some little distance from its rear edge and side edges, with guide and limiting lugs 4; 5, represents a face view of the upper tooth-plate, the body 6, of which, is not so long as the body of the lower tooth-plate, and it is also provided with cutting-teeth 7, which correspond to the cutting-teeth 2, of plate l, but not quite so long; said body 6, is provided with cross-slots 8, in which the said lugs 4, work, and thereby guide said plate, and keep it from moving too far to the right or left. In the rear edge of said upper tooth-plate is a semi-circular recess 9. Fitting in the square perforation 3, of the lower tooth-plate, is the square part of a threaded bolt 10, which bolt is cylindrical, except the square part just mentioned. Working in said semi-circular recess 9, is the eccentric head Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 3, 1908.
Patented July e?, 190e.
serial no. 436,415.
v'to the said perforation 13, which works over the cylindrical portion of the bolt l0. Said plate 15, is provided on its under face, and at each end, with elevating blocks or turned down parts of said plate l5 I?, which taper upwardly and forwardly. Said plate is secured bottom side down to the upper face of said lower plate I, its forward edge 151, iitting down over the upper face of said upper plate, and over said lugs 4, its rear part fitting over the eccentric part of lever 12, and the forward end of arm 14, said blocks 17, being for the purpose of raising said plate l5, to give room for the lever 12, and plate 6, to move to the right and left. The forward edges of said blocks 17, are so inclined as to cause the forward edge 151, of said plate, to bear down sufficiently tight on the plate 6, to cause its cutting-teeth to come sharply in contact with the cutting-teeth of toothplate l.
All the parts above described are held together by the bolt IO and nut 18, which not only serves to hold the assembled parts together, but may also be used to loosen or tighten the pressure of the forward edge of the plate 15.
A double-spring 19, has one end rigidly secured to the inner face of the arm 14, and its other arm slidably secured to the inner face of the eccentric lever 12.
The purpose of having the lever head slightly eccentric, is to enable me to throw the tooth-plate 6, fully to the right, thus giving the teeth full sweep.
The operation of my invention is so apparent it is not necessary t describe it.
Although I have specifically described the combination, construction and arrangement of the several parts of my invention I do not confine myself particularly to such specific combination, construction and arrangement, as I may exercise the right to make such changes and modiiication therein as may IIO clearly fall Within the scope of my invention, and which may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit, or sacriiicing any oi' my patentable rights therein.
Having described my invention, What l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A grass clipper, consisting of a loWer plate 1 provided with cutting-teeth 2 3 guide and limiting lugs 1, rising 'l'roni the upper lace of said plate near its rear edge and a little distance Vfrom each of its side edges, and a square perforation near its rear edge an upper plate 6, provided with cutting-teeth 7,
\ corresponding to the cutting-teeth of said lower plate, and having cross slots S, fitting over said lugs 4, and in its rear edge a semicircular recess Q an arm 14, rigidly secured to the rear edge of said lower plate, a lever 12, provided With a circular perforation 13, and eccentric head 11, pivoted to said lower plate, its eccentric head Working in said semicircular recess; a binding plate 15, provided in its rear edge With a circular perforation 16, and on its under face, at each end, With for- Wardly tapering elevating blocks 17, said blocks shaped to cause the forward edge 151, of said plate to bind against the upper face ol said upper plate 6, said enumerated parts held together by a bolt 10 its square part iitting in said square perforation, its cylindrical part in said circular perforation, a nut y18, secured on its threaded end, and a doublespring 19, having one end rigidly secured to the arm 14, and its other end slidably secured to the lever 12, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES S. MCNEVV.
