EW J. ii'TURRi X'Y, OF 'LIORULAND, NEW YORK, ASS'EGNGR TO CORTI 'ANB CARRIAGE GOODS COMB NY, )1" CORTLAND, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION 9F NEW ORK Tet-it mized July :27, woo,
serial No. $56,175.
To all 107mm THU? condom:
. Be it known that i ANDREW J. iviURRAY, a. citizen oi the United Sta ties, and a resident of Qortlmui, in the county Mil-flood, in the Quite of New Yori have invenied new and usefui Impi'mremenis in Vehicle FQp-Shiitiisiis, of which he foiiowim taken in draw :stioni I oompmiymo; is :i foil, CiCtil, and exact desmi This 'xivontion relates to the iiti'zaoimient of'vohicioiops to the seats, and the inven tion is iiiesigiied ciiiefly to re use aha cost of innnui'setiwe of the so-c d i 'fb'ingi'aii on which the top is moon in, obviate certain defects oi the poo: cons motion, and to ti'mi 11d it ifiSiiiOS in the novei manner applying to the mii the usual studs 01' props fol Lung the supports fox thetop.
it is well known i'i 21, heretofore it has been the geneiai practice to seoui'e said studs to the rail by Wehiing o; the saii v parts. This method iiiis proved i'Lo beciiiiiouiil and unsatisfactory mvingg to tho mi; being 03* considerable length and. of such shape to Pen-- iiei' it cumbersome and inconvenient. for i131 (Hing; in tine operation o1 Welding, and the um ecrminty of producing yorfeot joints, and in consoquei'ice thereof the we (ling is lis-bie to be iiifoct' H: and he moon: of the stud 1 R1 1 is um'i able. seeming the stud to the rail in Hm manner stated, ii; is oo'kfious that 1 case i h stmioi' the 132115 iITQCQlTUf' broken: in any winjured. so as to impair its eiiicieney, the entire sii'uctui-e is rendered unfit i'o; use, as it incurs cimsidembie .ilSC to apply a new stud owing to Kim 3," amount of time and iHiHJi' required to propei'iy prepare the ail for :1 sea-nod woiiiing, lii'ii i'ui'tiierinoie, in making; suoii i'o'pziii' [he innri'ing oi the rail uiisvoidziiiiu.
The main oi ioe of the present invention )ciisivo .l'ilCi'iiOa'i of securing the id. to the mii wiioi'oiiy aforesaid obj etionniiio fez!- tuz'os siiziii avoided and wueii iv'iiiqioi'mit the stud to "lg; removed in case w rohLWv'fi-i of the pm i oi" mpairs i 2 required, and withoutdmxgor oi ii'izitei'iziiy injuring the finish of H mil.
vfioh {his .oi-jooi in viow my invention consists in the iiovei. construct in of the rail. and the attachment oi' the iUP-SUPDUI'tiHg stuii oi prop to said rail is hereinafter (lo-- soi'ibod si'iii claimed.
In the Ei CQUXHPZMXE- IQ drawing a perspective \iioW of e portion of the vehicletop shiH-l g raii embodying my improve ments; iiig; 2 is an enlarged detaii plan View, pint-1y in section, and iiiusti'iiting more fry the fiii i'fl-Ciliilfillil of the stud to the rail; 3 an enlarged detail outer side view of port-ion of the rail showing more cieeriv the forged eye for receiving the stuo and, 4 an enia-rged. detail View of a pOiiliOll of the stud.
Referring to the drawings 1- denotes vile so-oeiied shifting i-eii which is desig'nedi to support 518 top of a vehicle and is atfiaohed' to the VGhiQiG-Sefib in the Well known man- This rail is composed of a single metal rod bent enguiariy to form the members which extend along the ends am back of the vehicle-seat and it is of elliptical or other suitable shape in cross-section. i
2 denotes one of the plurality of studs 01' props which project outward from the rail 3. and support the frame of vehicle top. For attaching fiho said stud. to the rail, 1 proiide the end member of the rail adjacent to tho junction with the back member with a transverse eye -3 produced by forging,
by which operation the raiiis formed. with an onia-rgement having" fist faces disposed at opposite sides of the rail and surrounding the edges 0% the eye. x
In the outer face formed. a recess -i surrounding the eorresoonding edge of bi-1e eye and shaped square or polygonal to dose ShOli. rs indicated at --55. inner end, of the eye "3- is formed with a, countersink -6-. The said stud -'2, is formed from a rod which'is sqimye incrosssection and the outer end of said stud is reduced -and forme cylindrical and is sccewthreaded as usmii for the recepbios of a nut Yo; holding t ll; top T6011. The opposite or attaching om 3y this cons Emotion, it is obvious that the dosed. into the stud is securely fastened to the rail, and it is evident that in case the stud becomes broken, it can be easily removed for renewal by simply drilling into the inner end sufficiently to cut away the head -9 to allow the stud to be Withdrawn from the rail.
What I claim as my invention is z- As an improved article of manufacture, a vehicle-top shifting-rail composed of a single metal rod bent angularly to form the mem bers which extend along the ends and back of the vehicle-seat, each end member forged with a transverse eye adjacent to its junction With the back member and with the enlargement at the eye-portion having flat faces disposed at opposite sides of the member and surrounding the ends of the eye, a countersink formed around the inner end of the eye, the outer face of the enlargement being formed with a polygonal recess surrounding the corresponding end of the eye, and a stud having a polygonal portion seated in the said recess and a reduced cylindrical portion fitted to the eye, said cylindrical portion being upset to form a head seated in the countersink and terminating flush with the inner face of the enlargement as set forth and' shown.
