Be it known that I, BENEDICT RnNscH, a citizen of ,the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CardIIolders; and I do declare the followin r to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the ill t to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Playing cards when not in use are usually allowed to lie around loose so that they become soiled, bent, and shabby and are soon unfit for use. 7

My invention relates to a card-holder which overcomes the difficulties here indicated and which, more particularly, is designed to hold a pack of playing cards smooth flat and compressed and protected against dust andloss of the cards. I attain these objects by means of the devices and ar rangement of parts hereinafter described and shown, and illustrated-in the accompanying drawings, in which,

My card-holder consists of a sheet metal elongated rectangular box of which, in the drawings, 1 is the bottom, 2-2 the sides, and

3 one end. The top and the remaining end are open.

4 is a sheet'metal plate constituting a detachable top or cover for the case. At one end of the plate 4, midway of its width, is a projection 5 notched at each side, as at 6. In the top margin of'the end-piece of the box, 3, is anotch 7, the upper corners of the notch being provided with inwardly project- 'ing fingers 8. The fingers 8 approach each other so nearly as to prevent the notches 6 from slipping over the fingers simultaneously, but when the plate 4 is tilted sidewise be slipped through the Specificationof Letters Patent.

When the cards are in the case the top-plate 4 cannot be tilted sidewise and the plate cannot be disengaged from the fingers 8 until the cards have been removed from the case.

The forward end of the bottom of the box and the plate 4 are notched, as at 9, to permit the thumb and finger of the hand to grasp the exposed portion of the pack of cards so that the pack may be readily introduced into or withdrawn from the case. \Vhen the pack is to be slipped into the case the projecting portion 5 is pressed downwardly causing the forward end of the plate 4 to tilt upwardly thus providing a wide mouth of the box into which the pack of 12 is a stout wire bail bent as shown, its

ends projecting into the slots 11 which form bearings for the pivotal support of the bail. The bail near each end is provided with .a short bend 13 projecting substantially at a right angle to the plane of the bail and in such position that when the bail is turned backwardly flat upon the top-plate 4the bends 13 engage and press downwardly, with much force, the plate 4, thus tightly compressing the pack of cards within the case. Thebail is of suiiicient resiliency to permit the ends to be sprung toward each other so that the ends of the bail may be readily introduced into or withdrawn from the slots 11. By pivoting the bail in the lower ends of the slots 11 the bail 12, which forms a lever, is fulcrumed closer to the plate 4 than when the bail is pivoted at the upper ends of the curved slots 11. Thus the case may be made to accommodate packs of cards of greater or less thickness.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ally connected with the upper margin of the end, a lever pivotally engaged with the sides of the case and having projecting portions adapted to engage the top of the cover When the lever is thrown into substantially parallel relation with the to 7 2L In a device of the described character, a case comprising a bottom, one end, two sides havingupwardly projecting ears, said ears being pierced to form a plurality of bearings, a lever fulcrulned in said bearings and having portions which project at an angle to the plane of the lever, a top pivotally connected with the end of the case and arranged for contact with said projectingportions upon the lever.

3. In a device of the described character, asheet metal case, comprising a bottom two sides and one end, the sides having upwardly projecting ears pierced respectively to form a plurality of bearings, a lever fulcrumed in an opposed pair of the bearings and having projecting portions near the bearings, and a cover for the case-having a projecting portion which overlaps the end of the box, the end of the boxand the cover being notched respectively to form pivotal connections between the end of the case and the corresponding end of the cover.

4. In a device of the described character,

a sheet .metal case comprising a bottom two sidesand one end, the sides having up- Q, i V wardly projecting ears pierced respectively to form a plurality of bearings, a lever fulcrumed in an opposed pair of said bearings and having projecting portions near the bearings, and a cover for the case having a projecting portion which overlaps the end of the box, the end of the box and the cover being notched respectively to form pivotal connections between the end of the case and the corresponding end of the cover, there being a notch in the forward end of the cover and a corresponding notch in the forward end of the bottom of the case.

5. In a device of the described character, an elongated rectangular case open at one end and having a cover pivoted to the top at i one end, upwardly projecting portions upon the side of the case, a leverformed as a bail-fulcrumed at its opposite ends upon said upwardly projecting portions, and portions upon said bail near each end which project at substantially a right-angle to the plane of the bail and arranged to engage the top of the case when the bail is thrown into substantially parallel relation with said top.
