To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. Kmc, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Im rovements in TiePla.tes, of which the f0 owing 1s a specification.
This invention relates to a device for securely fastening the rails of a track to the ties, and relates more particularly to a device of that character consisting of a tie late having means for enga ing the base 0 the rail at one side, in com ination with adjustable means for engaging the base of the rail at the opposite side.
The invention has for one of its objects to improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character so as to be comparatively sim 1e and inexpensive to manufacture, reliab e and eflicient in use, and so designed as to be readily applied in position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a combined tie plate and brace consisting of two sections attiijustably connected to adapt itself to rails of ifierent sizes, there being a dove-tail tongue and groove connest-ion between the sections which permits of the device being enlarged or contracted to suit the rail, and which also permits of the device being readily applied or detached.
With these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accom anying drawing, which illustrates one em odiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a transverse section of a. rail and the securing device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the body section of the device. Fig. 3 is a. lan view of the clamping section thereof. ig. 4 is an end view showing the parts connected. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clamping section of the device.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the views.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a rail of standard construct-ion consistin of a head 1, web 2, and base 3, the latter eing engaged by the two sections B and C of the rail-securing device that are spiked in place on a cross tie.
The body section B com rises a rec-tan lar late 4 which is adapts to extend un er the ase of the rail. The plate 4 is prov'i ed with a longitudinally-extending slot 11 that extends inwardly from the and 0p osite to that having the enlargement or ead 5 to a point short of the base-engaging member 7 and the o posed walls of this recess are undercut so t at the slot will be of dovetail cross section.
The clamping section 0 comprises a plate portion 12 which has its inner face under cut to form a recess 13 and a base-engaging member 14, so that the edge of the base of the rail will be received in the said recess. Formed on the bottom of this plate 12 is a longitudinally-extending tongue or rib 15 which is of dove-tail cross section to fit in the groove or slot 11 of the body section B, and the said tongue projects he end the inner edge of the plate 12 so t at when it strikes the inner wall 16 of the slot 11, the opposite sides of the rail base will be tightly gl'i pad. The clamping member C is pro vi ed with a vertical opening 17 that extends through the plate portion 12 and through the tongue 15 for receiving the has tening spike 18, the top surface of the plate 12 being countersunk to receive the head of the spike. The under surfaces of the parts B and C are ribbed or grooved so as to increase the rip of the securing device on the tie to there y materially assist in preventing lateral movement of the rails.
From the for ing description, taken in connection with t e accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of o eration will be readily ap arent to those ski ed in the art to which t e invention appertains and while I have described the principle of o eration of the invention, together with t 0 device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such 0 es may be made when desired as are wit the scope of the claims ap ended hereto.
