Be it knownthat I, DANIEL Mums, a citi- I yzen of the United States,residing in Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbin-Thread Controllers for Sewing-Machines, of which the following description,
' taken in connection with the drawings herewith'accompaiiying, is a specification.
My invention relates'to that class of sewing machines employing a rotary or oscillating looper for carrying the needle-thread loop around abobbin to interlock with-the under or bobbin thread. In machines of this class it iscustomaryto provide a means of some character for acting upon the bobbinthre'ad to draw off a sulficient length of the same from the bobbin as may berequired for each stitch, and it has been the object of my present invention to provide a simple and effective means for so acting on the bobbinthread and which preferably will be capable of adjustment for re ulating the amount of 7 thread drawn from the bobbin according to 5 the thickness ,of the material being operated upon or the character of the work being performed. The necessary length of under or bobbin thread required for any desired length or character of stitch being thus drawn from the bobbin and given in a slack condition to the upper thread, so that it may be drawn through the goods by the latter when acted upon by the take-up, without any undue strain on said upper thread, enables the operatorto perform varied kinds of work upon goods of difierent kinds and thicknesses with the best results, and is especially desirable in buttonholing when the operator wishes to adjust the stitch for making different Widths of bight on the sides of the button-hole.

b and the flat face portion of the cam as connected thread-controller, is regulated according to the distance which the actuating portion of the cam projects beyond the flat face portion as will be obvious, and this adjustment may be varied by moving the cam longitudinally upon its shaft relative to the roller, as hereinbefore described.
In some instances, in lieu of the face-cam as illustrated in Figs 1, 2, and 3, I employ a grooved cam as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, which latter figures show enlarged views of a portion of the driving-shaft with a grooved cam thereon, and a portion of the thread-controller mechanism in dotted lines, illustrating the relative positions of the several parts when the lever (Z is in its normal position against the stop-pin and when moved therefrom, respectively. The width of the groove of this cam is greater than the width of the roller, as shown in Fig. (i, so as to allow for the adjustment of the cam relative to said roller as hereinbefore described, and also to allow the roller to move independently of contact with the opposite walls h, h, of the cam except at such time as the actuating portion h of the latter moves into engagement with the roller as shown in Fig. 5, which latter figure shows the position of the cam after having taken a half-turn from the position in-E 1g. 4.
