Speeificetion of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1909.
Application filed December EL 1906. Serial No. 350234.
To (I'M ?jj/2071?, 'ti may wtcera:
le it known that l, Jona Fmzmr WM Nen a citizen of the United States, and a resident ot Muncie, lJelnvare county, in the State ot Indiana, have invented a .new and uset'ul n'provement in Uontrolling Mechanism tor \"amable-Speed (hearing, of which the following is a s eeifieat-ion.
Aty invention relates to improvements in operating levers 'tor variablc speed gearing, through which several ditterentspeeds may he ohtained by certain shi'ts oit the geara in the variable speed gear set, and has 'tor it` object to provide certain new and use'tul immovemeuts :in the construction, form, and arrangement of parts whereby several variations of speed maybe easily determined, engaged and controlled by certain movements ot the actuating lover as the operator may Select.
i\ further object is to provide a suitable sup orting t'i-ame, a guide plate having' a single slot, a pair of sublevers with suitable axles and an aetutting lover having` both a later-al and rotary motion PLlfltYCly to the said axles.
i\ further object is to provide a device of the above character in which independently operatcd sublevers are'held in position by a suitable guide pl-ate, supported on a 't'rame in which is journaled the axles ot the sublevers HO as to make a selective lever complete in itself.
i\ further object is to provide a selective control lever set which has a guide plat'e having' a Single sht. adapt'ed to adinit o'l" at least :tour movements to the t wo sublevers to the selected positions controlled by the actuating lever.
X further object is to provide a selective control lever set:) which has a guide plate having a singletslot and a neutral position tor the actrating lever so as to loel( both sublevers when the aetuating lover is in neutral position.
A practical embodiment ot my invention is represented in the accompanyiug drawings, in which- Figure l is a seetional View ot my sei Fig. 2 is an end 'view showingthe side of the guide plate. Fig. 3 is a top View of the frame and guide plate only all other parts removed. Fle'. t is a perspective view ot' the :guide pla e. Fig. 5 is a face view ot one of the sublevers showing' the lUt'l `spring .removed. .t `ig. (i is an edge view ot' one ot the sublevers showing the lock spring rivcted to it el `ig. 'T is an edge view Ojt the locl; spring. big. S is a taee view ot the lock spring. big. t) s a perspeetive view ot' the shitting .key. Figs. lt) and ll show a moditicntion ot the bI'tIClQE or means ot support .t'or the guide plate. Figs l and lt) show a movement oli' the cole trot lever o, which l shall term in this specilication and claims, a lateral movement, as it is a movement longitudinally of, the axial centers ot the subleve's, and lihi-wise t i s. 2 and tt ll0\\' a movement ot the control lever ti which I shall term in this specitication and claims a rotary movement, as it` is a movement partly around the axial centers ot sublevers, so where these movements :tre mentioned it will be known what they are. Said levers are med in connection with a guide plate having u single slot, as a multiplieitv ot stots is eontusmg to the operator and otten ditlicuh to engage.
,l is a hrarl et adapted to bolt on to the regular trane ot au automobile by the tlange 1: and holes ill. The top portion ot the tn'aclet has two cars :lil which are Ft tilll'ttl to the guide plate :ltb v screws :30. 'l`he guide plaie l is prt'itt-t'abtv a eurved plzte having.: a single opening' 235 with hangt-s -tj, ;17, 23 and 22, and end ii' and 28, with notches 21 and '353 in the tlanges It' and 37.
3 and -tare sublevers, secured perma uently to the tube 123 and axlo tt respectivel v. the rsublevers and -l have their top endsa tled by the llane'es it, 237', 'i: and 22, so as to allow them to opet-ate through an are. and are provided with suitable openings 23, 2:1, pre'l'erably the same width the notches 21 and 25), and adaptel to regs-` ter therewith, and to he locked by the locl( springs 8 and i) 'which are seeuretl to the sublevers by screws It) and .ll. 'l he lOt'lC springs have suitably shaped end So bent or t'orn'ed as to adapt themselves as' loeleng` devices to hold the sublevers in the central or neutral position, and to make the openings 223, 223 register with the note-hes 21, and 29.
The control or selective lever (3, pivoted to the hearingblock 5. by a pin 7, and car ries a cross member or key 38, Secured by a suitable pin 12. Haid'eross member 38. has
. uitable notcles 18 and 19 adaptcd to regis= ter with the tlanges ti and :37 when the control h-Ver t' is noveci sidewise as shown 'in-dotted linos lt' and ti respeetivei r in Fig. 1.
Un sonie a uoinohiles it may he neeemry to the other t'irns ot iH'llt'htiS to support, the, guide plate; t'or instanee the guide plate may hare legs rast. integrally therewith as shown in Fig. ii al ili) and ll), or it nay have other means of support as hy the l'ranie oti the anto'noinle, and it may he nade liat on top instead of enrved or a variety of ways.
'the hearing -ll shown in Vig. ii nay he used tor supporting the. suhlevers or sonte other t'orn' ot hearing;` nn he snhstituted, hut it is hivions that the guide piate should he held pernanently and in a certain relation to the axial center.
The operation of nn' seieetive control lover set, is as l'oliows: 'the eontroi lover t' is held in nentrzl position hy the ioul springs on the suhlerers as shown in l ig. l. t-up`- posing thti the axie l l he eoupled to a \"ariahle speed gear rset in sn'h n wy as to giu' a slow or lirst speed hy noving it one wa and a reverse notion l tnoring it in the opposite direetion and thwtnho i i so eonnected as to giro the third and second speeds hy front. and hawk novenents respectivoly in positions as shown in i ig. ll', the reverse notion ol' the iu 'enis is ohtained l pressing the oontroi hwer t' to the right' as hown in dotted lines it', so that the nolt-h IE) in hey BS regisle's with the llaneje li, when the control ieve' ti. is looked to the snhlever t, hy means oti hey 35, and the pair thns ene'aged are artuau-d forward or hackward. The pair are held locked by the tiange ::37. siinilar noi'enent is nade by pressing the control ie'x'er ti over to a position shown in dotted iines i?, ut: which time the su ierer is engaged to the controi lever t` hy key 38, and the forward and hael ward novenents give respeotively the third and ::eeond speed& it is elear to see that when the control len-r i brought to the eentrai or neutral positioln the springs H, and t), e ualize themselves against' the opposite ends of the hey 238, whieh i'orns a lori( l'or hoth the control level' and the two suhierers. To operale ny seleetive control lerer set it' is thereliore necessa' to give the control lerer two movements in the single siot 3.7: that i aetnale it to either position it or iT. and then shit't it forward or har-kward. it; is also ohviousthat i van select or htain an position or speed l'ron the neutral point without going' through or passing any other operaling positioin and without latehes thnni pnshes or tinger controlled parts on the eollil'ni lever. it also ohrions that ny t'it!( 'ti\'t eontroi lever set is seli' looking, and is' a reliahie autonatic looking len-r set. i do not intend to say that t'instieriee van not operale any other l l l l l l l l i l i l l l l l l enga 'e in the recess in the appr war. nor (lo i mean 'to iinit myself to this exac t'orn ot" eonstruetion. especially With regard to the t'orn of support.
