GEORGE A.. SCHWEBEL AND JOHN F; SCHWEBEL, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
SV/'TCrI-OPE RATING DEVICE T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE A.. Senwn- BRL and JOHN F. Semvnnni., citizens of the Tnited States, residing at Lancaster', in the county of l'iancaster and State o. Pennsylvi nia, have invented certain new and uselul lfmprovements in Switch-0perating Devices, of which the following` is a speci'lication, rel"- erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Our invention relates to switch-operating devices of that class which are used to shil't the switch-tongue on street railways, and of that particular class which are operated l'roni the car.
The objects of our invention are to produce simple, 1positive id durable device of this class and also one that may be operated from the platform of the car by the motor-man without interfering with his regular duties. lhile still another object of our invention is to provide a device ol this kind secured to the car-truck in such a way that lateral movements otl 'the car body will in no way all'eet the operation or relation of the device with relation to the road bed or track.
lith these and other objects in View, our invention consists in certain novel construction and combination of parts as will herein- I strained by the tension spring 17, which 1s alter be fully described and claimed, reiference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which like 'figures of reference relier to corresponding parts in all the views. But it is 'lully understood that while we have herewith described our invention herewith illustrated, slight changes may be made in the construetion and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit oli the invention.
1n the drawings zv-Figure 1, is a sectional elevation ol a partial view of a car showing our device attached thereto and in a position `for operating a switch. Fig. 2, is a -lront view of our device in detail as attached to the car-truck frame. Fig. 3, is a partial plan view of a rail and switch-tongue showing the operation of our device. Fig. 4, is an enlarged top plan view of one of our switch throwing shoes. Fig. 5, is a side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1, indicates the usual end brace o' the car-truck, to which is secured the plate 2, which is vtorined with the outwardly projecting arm 3, provided with the horizontal bearing L1. Mounted within said bearing 4, and the bearing brackets 5,
Specification of Letters Patent.

which are also secured to the end brace 1, are the rocker-shafts 6, which are provided with the collar 7, designed to bear against said bearings L1, and 5, and restrict the thrust oil said rocker-sha'l'ts 6. Said rocker-shafts 6, are provided with the levers 8, which are. pivoted thereto in such a manner as to compensate lor any lateral movement olE the cir' body, such as that produced in the act ol rounding a curve. Vilhile upon the outer ends o'l said rocker-shafts G, are rigidly secured the heads E), at or near a central point thereof. Said heads 9, being formed with the transverse orifices 10, near the ends thereol. Hingeably secured by their upper ends within said orifices 1.0, are the liftingrods 11, to the lower ends ol which are adjustably and detachably secured the. shoes 12, while the action of said lifting-rods 11, are guided by the bearings 13, which are 'formed in the lrame 141, which is secured to the truck end 1.
The shoes 12, are in the general lorm of a crescent with the two engaging points 15, and are detachably secured upon the liftingrods 11, by being slipped over the end thereol and secured by tho screw 1G, which is threaded into the end of said rod 11, while the upward movement ol the shoe is repassed through and around said rod 11, thus forming a collar, while its ends 18, are bent downward and engage orifices in the upper surface of said shoe 12, lor the purpose of keeping one ol the engaging edges 15, ol the shoe in contact with the rail so that it will readily engage the switch-tongue when released lrom the guard rod 19, by the lowering action ol the lifting-rod. lt may here be stated that by the use ol a shoe of this form, when one o1 the engaging edges 15, becomes worn the shoe may be reversed to bring the other end into use.
The guard rods 19, arc lor the purpose ol keeping the shoes from contact with the rail when not in use and are secured to the frame 14, and engage the side of the shoe when same is in a normal p osition, and also serve to restrain the turning action of the tension spring, and it will here be noted that as the shoe is lowered it will extend below the top of the rail before it is released by said rod, so that it cannot swing too lar around to prevent its catching the rail.
The operation of the device is controlled by the connecting-rods 20, which are attached at their rear ends to the levers S, and at their forward ends to the hand-levers 2l, Which are mounted upon the car-platform in the usual Way and secured in a normal position by the rod 22, and catch 23, Which engage the notched quadrant 24.
The operation of our device is so simple and Will be so readily understood from the foregoing description that it will not be necessary to go into the matter more fully.
Our invention having` thus been described, What We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a switch-operating` device of the class described, comprising a frame secured to the car-truck and formed With vertical bearings near the ends thereof, lifting-rods mounted in said bearings, shoes formed with reversible switch-tongue engaging ends and detachably secured upon said lifting-rods, tension springs secured upon said rods in contact with the upper surface of said shoes and having` their ends detachably secured. to said shoes, means for raising and lowering,` said lifting-rods and means for operating said raising and lowering,` mechanism from the car.
2. In a switch-operating device of the class described, comprising a frame formed With etending arms containing vertical bearings and secured to the car-truck, liftingrods mounted in said bearings, engaging shoes detachably and adjustably secured upon said lifting-rods, guard rods secured to said frame and adapted to co-act with said shoes and limit the swivel action thereof, supporting bearings secured to said car-truck in a higher plane than said frame, rockerarms journaled. in said. bearings, cross-heads secured upon the outer ends of said rockerarms and provided With orifices to receive and retain the ends of said lifting levers, said rocker-arms formed with transverse orilices, swivel levers having,` their lower ends rotatably secured in said orifices, connecting-rods secured to the upper ends oi" said levers and a hand-lever mounted upon the car-platform with its lower end secured to said connectingrod and adapted to operate the same and the mechanism thereto attached.
ln testimony whereof We aHiX our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
