Description

diluida mes' parte cria.
Leners 'Patent No. 92,760, man .my 2o, 1869.
ORG'IAN-ACTION.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingpart of the same.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, ADAM SToRcK, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Melodeon and Organ-Action; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to .the accompanying drawing, forming part lof this specification, in.4
which--A Figure 1 represents a plan or proved melodeon or organ action. A
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on the plane of the line :1J-x, iig. 1.
Figure 3 isja vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken on the plane of the line y-ql, iig. 1.
' Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding top view of my imparts. l
with the. key.
The cams on the shaft are so placed that they will, for a desired key, majorer minor, throw the requisite reeds into gear.
There are twelve keys provided on the finger-boardl for each' octave, they being apted to the ordinary notes of the chromatic scale. The enharmonic scale has, however, almost twice as many notes, which can, on the ordinary action, n'ot be produced.v
The` object of this invention is,`therefore, to give to each key of the finger-boardsnch a connection that it can play one of two notes, as may be desired.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description, and from the drawing:
A, in the drawing, represents the frame of ,a' melodeou provided with my improved -action.`
B B are the keys, pivoted to the frame, they being arranged as usual-twelve to each octave, as shown. l From the under side of each key, B, projects, downward, an arm, C, which is drawn forward-by a spring, a, to keep its key in a horizontal position.
Each arm C has a block, b, at its inner side, by
whichthe valve-rod pertaining to it is struck.
'Ihere are tw'o rows, I) and E, of reeds, one row in front oi`- the other, each row having as many reedsea's" there are keys B. There arc thustwo reeds for each key B.
rIhc reeds in theback row, E, reach lower than those of the front row, D, so that the valves in the former are alsosome distance lower than those in the latter.
F F are the valve-rods of the. front reeds, D, and G, those of the back reeds, E.
These rods are all tted through frames H, of which there are as many as there are keys 'B.
Each frame H consists of two bars, c and d, pivoted together so as to form nearly a right angle.
The horizontal bar c is in line with the key to which i pertains, pivoted to the frame A, while the vertical bar d is suspended from the front end of c, and reaches' down through' a cross-bar, e, of the frame.
The valve-,rods F G,which pertain to one set of reeds, are fitted through the vertical arm d,V of the frame H, and are supported by the same.
The horizontal bar c, f each flame H, rests upon a roller, I, which. hasits bearings in the ends of the frame A, and which has a. series of cams, f j, one be' low each bar b.
These cams are so disposed that, by turning the roller I, some frames 'are raised on them, while other frames are left to rest on the surface of the roller.
When a frame,.H, is raised by means of a cam, j,
it-will carry the end of .its lower valverod, G, opposite the block, b, to bring thereby the back reed in connection with the key B, while those framesH which are not' raised hold the ends of theupper rods, F, opposite to the blocksb, to keep the front reeds in connection with their keys B.
The reedsin the back row, E, are for the next lower tones than those in the front row,- as indicated in fig.
l, where, for eiample,`the rst front reed is for the note O, that behind it being for Bit. The next front reed is for Db and that in its rear for Gili, and so on.'
1t is well known, that' in vthe enharmonic scale, Aa difference exists between thesha'rp of one note and the dat of the next following note.
On the shaft or roller I is mounted a disk, J, which has its circumference` divided into twelve spaces, for the twelve mai'u keys.
. When the roller is turned, to bring the requisite one of its twelve spaces into a particular desired position, say to the front or top of the roller, the frames H will, by the camsj, have been acted upon, to bring those of the front and rear reeds into connection with the action that are needed for the requisite key.
K is a loose ring, tted around the rollerI, and convinected, by a strap, L, with a treadle, and held in position by a spring, g, by which it is connected with the frame A, so 4that a stop, m, on the ring may strike a' fixed stop, fn.
A lug, h, is formed on the ring K, it fitting between one of twelve recesses ornotches formed on an annular plate, M, as shown.
The plate M is, by means of springsrods i i, connected with the roller I, so that it is, by said springs,
held against the ring K, while it may be forced toward the disk J, to liberate the tooth h.
A suitable mechanism is provided to turn the shaft for each key.
I propose to arrange twelve stops in the middle of the instrument, one for each key of tune, so that by pulling such key, the roller will be turned far enough to bring the requisite reeds into gear.
The thirds, fourths, &c., and all variations of a main key, can, by a slight motion of the treadle, be produced as long as needed, the spring g carrying the roller back for the main key as soon as the treadle is released.
Having thus described my invention,
'What I claim as new, and desire to secure by4 Letters Patent, is-
l. A melodeon or organ-action, provided with two reeds or pipes for each key, and separate connections, F G, so adjustable that either one of them may be acted on bythe keyto which. they belong, substantjally asand for the purposes set forth.
2. The cam-cylinder I f, constructed and operating in combination with the frames H, substantially as described, for the purpose stated.
3. The frames H, employed to hold the valverods F G, of two sets of reeds, in the requisite positions, and bring either one -into connection with its key B, as described, by the action of a cam -cylinder, I, or any other suitable mechanism.
4'. The combination of the ring K, sprinfr g, and treadlc, with the ring M, springs li, and disk of the roller I, all arranged and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
5. 'The valve-rods F and G, of an organ or melodeonaction, when supported, in pairs, by adjustable frames, substantially as herein shown and described, for thc purpose speciiied.
ADAM STORGK.
