ATTORNEYS Patented July 6, 1909.
JOSEPH L. HART, OF CHICKASHA, OKLAHOMA.
LINT-COT'I'ON PICKER AND CLEANER.
vSpecification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Application filed November 19, 1907. Serial No. 402,904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn L. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chickasha, Grady county, State of Oklahoma, have invented Improvements in Lint- Cotton Pickers and Cleaners, of which the following is a complete specification, reference being made to the accoitnpanying drawings, in which is represented a vertical longitudinal section of the main portion of the machine.
The machine is adapted for picking and cleaning lint-cotton, either in loose form or as it comes from the bale, and the invention is embodied in the particular construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, A indicates a sliding head, or head-block, which projects down through a longitudinal slot in the floor of the box B, and which is so connected with a screw-shaft O, that it may be moved forward and back in the box B, which, in practice, receives the cotton that is to be cleaned. To adapt the box for this purpose, the top and side walls are adapted to be opened in order to receive the cotton but when the machine is in operation the top and sides of the box must be closed. The screw-shaft C is arranged in bearings beneath the table or floor of the reception box B and is driven by bevel gearing D, which derives motion through a belt 4 that runs on a pulley mounted on the driving shaft D arranged on the frame work B. An endless toothed belt E runs on horizontal drums or rollers 1, 2, 3, which are arranged in triangular relation in the frame B. The rollers 1, 3 are of similar size and larger than the roller 2; and one of them is arranged directly over the other so that the belt E extends vertically across the inner end of the reception box B. The upper drum or roller 1 is driven from the shaft D by means of a belt 4 and thus the belt E is caused to travel in the direction of the arrow.
The belt E is made of any suitable, strong, flexible material and a series of small blocks are riveted to such material. and arranged in rows and provided with saw teeth, preferably one and one and one-half inches in length. When the belt is caused to travel, its teeth take up the cotton that is pushed against it by the block B and convey it over to a rotary cylindrical brush F, which is arranged in the mouth or entrance of the large spout G. This brush is driven by a belt 4U from a large pulley on the drive-shaft D The brush F is provided with transverse rows of bristles or other brushes adapted for removing the cotton and conveying it toward and into the spout G by which it is delivered to other mechanism for further treatment.
It will be seen that by the means described, the cotton placed in the reception box B is pushed and fed forward by the head block A to the vertical run of the endless toothed traveling belt E, whereby the cotton is picked, subjected to the action of the air,
and largely freed from foreign matter. In other words, by means of the toothed belt arranged to form a perpendicular surface at the end of the cotton-receiving box B, the cotton is removed as fast as it approaches the same, and all dirt, and other substances heavier than the cotton are thus removed.
l/Vhat I claim is:
In a machine of the type indicated, the combination with a cotton reception box having a horizontal floor provided with a longitudinal slot, a head-block adapted to slide in said slot, a screw shaft connected with the portion of such head-block which projects below the floor of the box, the top and sides of the latter being closed, and an endless belt arranged on pulleys placed in triangular relation, a run of the belt being vertical and the teeth thereof projecting upward and in the direction in which the belt travels and means for imparting motion to the aforesaid screw shaft and belt in the manner described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
