a citizen oi the United States, residing' at .iliutlcig in the county oi Richland, `Statie oi"` Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in il"iin-lllori/*ers; and l do herebydcclare the followingl -to be c full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
'llie present invention relates to ian.-blow ers, and it ainis to provide a simple, efficient, and inexpensive device of :that nature, the several parte ci which are detachably connected with eacb. other, so as to permit the device to be easily and iniickly taken to pieces and sot up airain.
The intenti, from the iollowing detailed description, and its pri red. embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like parte are desgnated by corresponding-lreierence numerals the several. views.
@if the said iiraiifiiigsFigure ,l is an end view ci a ian constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side eleva tion thereof.. Fig. E3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. el is a perspective View oi one of the side plates of the fan casing. Fig. 5 is a similar view oi the metal band connectingl the'side plates. Fie. il is a verti Yil section taken. longitudinally tiirongifi the ian ceasing.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, Y designates the support for the blower and its drivingmeans, and, as shown, is iorrned ci a single casting provided with up per and lower ilanges il and S) and a connect` ingl flange lil, the iatter being disposed at the inner edge ci the casting. The' ilanges 8 forni. the lower in einbers of the bearings for the drii/'eslrait il ci the blower', the upper bearin embers being' formed by a piiir ol remorse c caps i2, bolted to the ilanges 8. The shaft il c Tries a l:eltpu ilc v 13, which is disposed within the ttsbaped recess ld, ici-ined in the casting.; 7. Shcit ll is further provided adjacent the outer end of thc casting with a collar i5, which serves to linut or prevent end-plajfl lilacli of the caps 12, above reiorrcd to, preferably carries an oil cup 1lb, through which a lubricating medium is passed to the shaft.
ils shown in Fig. 3, tbe drive-shaft extends will be readily understood` plate is beyond the castingr 7 Vand into :the ,easing [1.7 ol' the blower, winch. Vlattericomprises ,outer and inner plates 18 .and 1'9,.eaoh.of ,wl'richfis provided with a series .of radially projecting ears 20, that are arranged lin traneuersely inlined pairs, the ears being Vperforated forithe reception of the tie-.bolts 2i. Each aide plate of the casingis provided Vwithsavertical tangential projection 22, and wither `plate is provided on its vinner ,tace ,with ,a deep groove 23, arranged adjacent to its outer edge and following the contour of the plate. These grooves serve as retaining means for a resilient metal band 24, the side edges of which iit therein, the band being retained in place through the action of the tie-bolts, above referred to. Owing to the resiliency of the metal from which the band is formed, it may be readily bent so as to fit in the grooves in the casing plates, the space between the free ends of the band forming the discharge opening,-r of the blower.
The drive shaft il carries a fen 25 within the casing 17 which is formed with a hub splined or otherwise connected with shaft and with the outer surface square, and u on which thefan structure is mounted. he ian structure comprises a. plurality of fan blades 26 with the inner end of each blade bearing against the adjacent end of the next blade and so on around the central portion of the fan, leaving a square central opening in which the square hub lits, as shown. The blades 26 are supported by angular braces so that a verf,T rigid and substantial fan is produced, which is sim le in construction and can be inexpensive y manufactured. The fan is also removable from or attacbable to `the sheit for renewal or repairs, or to enable the fan to be reversed upon the shaft.` The fan blades 26 are thus arranged in the requisite tangential position relative to the shaft, as will be obvious.
The inner side plate 19 of the casing, as' shown in Fig. i, isV bolted directl)T to the flange 10 of the casting 7, while the outer rovided with on axial opening 27 formed t iercthrough, the walls-of which are being drawn outwardly to `forni a collar 28, to which one cnd of the suction pipe 29 is se cured, the latter being formed of a series of jointed sections, as shown. The pipe 29 further includes a series of elbow joints so as to permit a turning movement of the pipe sec-I tions in different directions. The casing insov ci'udes a discharge pliepe connected thereto adjacent the openxn armed therein and preferehly extending directly u iward.
@Wing to the detaehab e connection between the severei perte of the machine, it may be readily and quickly taken to pieces and put together agein.v it will also be seen that the entire machine ineiudes but few parts and therefore may he manufactured at small cest, end that where a single 1*strt has heeoine worn or otherwise injure( it may be replaced at a slight cost,'thus continuing the life of the machine arnost indefinitely.
A. fan blower -eomgrising side and end wells, a" shaft exten ing into the casing through one of the sides, a hub rigid with the shaft, a iurelity ef blades fast to the hub, having t eir inner ends substantiall the same width as the length of 'the hub an their outer ends substantially the saine width es the fen casing, and their opposite 1ongitudi nal sides having a compound curvature er? tending from the extremities of the upper ends to the corresponding extremities of the lower ends, and brecin elements connecting the inner ends of the lades, each element being a tetrahedron with its base disposed aainst the inner end of the blade, the edge o each element operating to split and deieet the air in the zone surrounding the shaft, whereby the formation of a dead air cushion is revented.
n testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of witnesses.
