ROAD-REPAIRING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINDsoR G. l-lnnniue, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Comanche, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-ltepairing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in road working or repairingmachines.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and highly effective machine of this character which will fill up the wagon ruts, level the road bed and pack the same firmly so as to put the road in first-class condition.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully de scribed and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved machine; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a front elevation with parts removed and in section; and Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal section taken on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
The machine comprises a main frame 1 and two similar side frames 2 each of which latter is adapted to travel over one of the wagon ruts in the road and to carry devices for filling up the ruts, leveling the road bed and packing the same. The main frame comprises an axle 3 to the center of which is secured a tongue 4 and the ends of which are connected by a vertically disposed arch 5. Said arch is lined at its ends to the ends of the axle. Said ends of the axle are also connected by diagonal braces 7 to the tongue and diagonal braces 8 are arranged between the tongue and the axle, as more clearly shown in Fig. 1. The arch is still further strengthened by a centrally arranged inclined brace 9 connected to the top of the arch and the top of the tongue and similar inclined side braces 10 between the top of the arch and the intermediate portions of the diagonal braces 7. A drivers seat 11 is arranged upon the rear portion of the tongue and upon the front portion of the same is a draft tree 12 carrying two double trees 13 each of which in turn carry two swingle trees 14. The ends of the draft tree or beam 12 are connected by chains 15 to the axle and also to the upper portion of the arch. This construction, it will be seen, provides an exceedingly rigid and substantial main frame which is effectively supported by two large wheels 16 rotatably mounted on the intermediate portion of the axle 3. y
The two side frames 2 are the same in con struction, hence a description of one will suffice for both. Said frame 2 is of open rectangular form consisting of two lower side bars 17 connected by front and rear uprights 18 to two similar upper side bars 19. The latter are connected at their front ends by front connecting bars 20 and at their rear ends by rear connecting bars 21 and the rear ends of the lower side bars 17 are united by lower connecting bars 22. The front ends of said lower bars 17 are pivoted to the axle 3 so that the front end of the frame is supported by the latter and the rear end of the same can swing vertically. Said rear end of the frame 2 is supported by arear wheel or roller 23 journaled in the forked lower end 24 of a standard 25 which is rotatably mounted in bearings 26 located. centrally upon the connccting bars 21, 22.
27 denotes a chain or similar flexible connection arranged between the rear portions of the two frames. This connection permits said frames to move independent of each other in a vertical direction but at the same time prevents them from swinginglaterally or outwardly and consequently, relieves the pivotal or hinge connections at the front ends of the bars 17 from strain.
Arranged within each of the side frames 2 are two disk carrying beams 28 each of which has its forward end pivoted at 29 to the ttXlG 3 and its rear end arranged for vertical movement between two guide rods 30 depending from an upper connecting bar 31 arranged between the upper side bars 19. Each of said beams 28 carries a plurality of hangers or standards 32, the upper ends of which are preferably adjustably connected to the beam 28 and the lower ends of which have journaled upon them rotary disks Three of said disks are preferably carried by each of the beams 28 and they arev so constructed and arranged as to travel on each side of one of the wagon ruts and scrape the earth from the high portions of the road and throw the same into said ruts. It will be understood that these disks 38 may be of any suitable form and construction and that for them may be substituted any equivalent earth working devices that will effect the desired result, namely, the cutting down of the high places at the sides of the ruts in the road.
In order to permit the beams 28 to be adjusted vertically and also to be elevated to support the disks in an inoperative position, the rear ends of said beams have connected to them chains, cables or the like 34 which pass over guide wheels or pulleys 35 journaled upon the bars 31 and also over guide pulleys 36 ournaled upon the arch 5, as more clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the draw ings. The other extremities of the chains 34 are connected to levers 37 pivoted upon the axle 3 and carrying spring projected and hand retracted pawls 38 to engage segmental locking racks 39 fixed to said axle. It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 3 that four of the levers 37 are provided, one being adapted to control each of the four disk earrying beams and that by manipulating said levers the beams may be raised and lowered as desired and secured in any adjusted position.
Arranged beneath each of the side frames and between the disks 33 and the roller or wheel 23 is a substantially semi-circular scraper plate 40 which drags over the road and tends to level the same. Said scraper or drag 40 has its ends fixed to the angular depending ends 41 of two links 42, the for ward ends of which latter are pivoted to the axle 3, as shown at 43. It will be seen that the links or arms 42 pivotally support the scraper or drag 40 so that the latter may rise and fall with the surface of the ground and will drag all the ground loosened by the disks 33 into the wagon ruts. In order to elevate the scrapers or drags 40 their central portions are connected to chains 44 which pass over guide wheels orpulleys 45 journaled upon the bars 31 and over similar pulleys journaled upon the arch 5, the other extremities of said chains 44 being conneeted'to hand levers 46 which are arranged upon the axle 3 and are similar to the levers 37. Two of the levers 46 are provided, one being for each of the scrapers or drags 40.
The operation of the invention is as follows: The machine is drawn over the road to be repaired by four mules or other draft animals hitched to the swingle trees 14 and the driver or operator upon the seat 11 adjusts the several disk carrying beams 28 and the two drags 40 so that as the machine moves forwardly the disks will cut the high places in the read while the drags will level the same and direct the loose earth or ground into the ruts and the wheels or rollers 23 will then firmly pack the earth. By making the machine as shown, the two ruts in the road formed by the wagon wheels will be filled and the road effectively leveled and packed by one trip of the machine over the road so that the use of the latter will effect a great saving in both time and labor.
While I have shown and described. the preferred embodiment of the invention it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction set forth since various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A machine of the character described comprising a wheel supported main frame, side frames swung from the same, and means carried by said side frames for cutting down the high places in the road, filling the ruts and packing the same. 7
2. A machine of the character described comprising a wheel supported main frame, side frames swung from the same at their forward ends, packing rollers or wheels for supporting the rear ends of said side frames, earth cutting elements beneath the forward portions of said side frames, and drags beneath the intermediate portions of said side frames and arranged between said elements and said rollers.
3. A machine of the character described comprising a wheel supported main frame, side frames swung from the same at their forward ends, packing wheels or rollers for supporting the rear ends of said frames, vertically swinging disk carrying beams, means for raising and lowering said beams, vertically swinging drags or scrapers arranged between the disks upon said beams and said rollers and means for raising and lowering said drags.
4. A machine of the character described comprising a wheel supported main frame, side frames swung from the same at their forward ends, packing wheels or rollers for supporting the rear ends of said frames, disk carrying beams swung from the main frame, means upon the side frames for raising and lowering said beams, drags swung from the main frame and interposed between the disks on said beams and said rollers and means upon the side frames for raising and lowering said drags.
5. A machine of the character described comprising a main frame having an axle, all
