To all whom it may concern:
.Be it knownthat" I, JAMES WYNDHAM Manic, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at 32 Albert S 'oad, Stroud Green,-.London, N., England,
have invented certain new and useful Improveinents in Daylight Developing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to apparatus for use in the development of photographic roll films in daylight and other actinic light, and '=.particularly .to apparatus having an opaque apron in which the film and its black paper .15 can be wound up and'then transferred to a *developing tank-without ex osing' the sensi tizedsurface of the film to ight. In apparatus of this type hitherto adopted it is necessary to use a separate cumbersome dark boxfitted with appliancesforwinding the film from its spool onto the apron, and then to remove the latter with the film from the separate dark box and transfer it to a developing tank.
The'object of the present invention is to provide a very compact forin-of dark box or container for the apron and-film and its black paper, which together with thG CQI1' tained apron and film can be bodily inserted in the developing tank. I

The accompanying drawings illustrate one form of daylight developing apparatus according to, the invention.
Figure 1 is a'longitudinal section'of the container, with the .spool box attached I thereto, the section beingtaken on the line I I Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on theline II-II Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4; are end views of the'contain'er with the spool box attached thereto. Fig. 5 'is an outside view of the closed container, with thespool box removed. Fig. 6 is a'transverse section of the container fitted with the spool box and illustrating the manner in, which the film and apron are wound. Fig. 7 is a detail view of one end of the apron. Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation of a developing tank.
In carrying out the invention according]- to one mode a container, 1, is provided with holes, 3, in its ends, 2, for the ingress and egress of llqlll-(l and air, the holes being shielded by flanges, 4, on a reel spindle, 5,
to prevent the inlet of light. The container, 1, has a large opening closed by a door, 7 hinged at 6 and secured in any suitable manner, as forinstance by a wire, 28, sliding in loops 37, on the door, 7, and into a loop, 38, on the container, 1.

The reel spindle, 5, is provided wit'hmilled heads, 18, 19,-by either of which it can be readily rotated and a slight braking resistance is afforded by a spring, 17, Fig. 4,

which portion is preferably ,of polygonal form. The spindle, 5, also 'has a wire loop, :26, for holding the, end of the usual black paper strip 29, to which the film is attached,
and further with hooks, 27, for receiving hooks, 25, on the end of an opaque cellulold or other suitable apron, 21, having side ridges, 22, for maintaining the sensitive surface of the film out offcontact with the apron. Apparatus fbr developing photographic roll films in daylight comprising a cylindrical container having an opening in its side, a concentric partition within the container secured to the side thereof adjacent to said opening a reel spindle Within the container and an opaque apron adapted to pass through the aforesaid opening and between the partition and the side of the container and to be wound on the aforesaid reel spindle substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
5. Apparatus for developing photographic roll films in daylight comprising a cylin drical container having an opening in its side, a concentric partition within the container secured to the side thereof adjacent to said opening, a reel spindle within the container, an opaque apron adapted to pass ready to be attached to the spindle, 5. The exposed film on its spool, 30, is then placed in the spool box, 9, and the latter is Slld onto the door, 7, of the casing. The door, 7, is opened, the usual paper seal of the exposed spool is broken and the end of the black paper strip, 29, is passed under and clipped by the wire, 26. The end of the apron is next attached to hooks, 27, and the door, 7, is closed the parts assuming the positions indicated in Fig. (3 whereupon the spindle, 5, is rotated by one of the heads, 18 or 19, and the film and apron are Wound onto the spindle. After they have been completely wound thereon, the spool box, 9, is removed and the container, 1, with the film and apron therein is immersed in the developing tank, 35, which is filled with any suitable develop ing solution up to the level indicating beading, 36. The container, 1, is raised and lowered once or twice to expel the air and insure proper access of liquid to all parts of the film after which it is allowed to stand for a few minutes. It is then preferably removed inverted and again inserted and allowed to remain for a sufiicient time to complete the development after which it is removed placed in a washing bath or under desired the film may be removed from the container before fixing to insure a thorough washing.
It will be understood that when the film is not attached at the rear end to the black paper strip, the loose end of the film should lge'attached to the black paper backing before the spool is placed in the spool box, and also, that when not so provided by the m akers of the film it is desirable to mark the paper near the end with the word Stop or Halt or with an equivalent mark or indication to warn the operator when the initial winding from the spool to the reel should cease to enable apron, 22, to be attached when the door, 7 must be closed to protect the film from light until developed.

Apparatus for developing photographic roll films in daylight comprising a container having an opening in its side, a reel spindle within the container, an opaque apron the aforesaid openmg and to he wound on the reel spindle, and means for containing a film;spool adapted to allow the film to be wound on the reel spindle simultaneously with the apron, substanthe partition and the side of the container, and to be wound on the aforesaid reel spin- (110, a door hinged to the side of the container and having an opening and a spool box adapted to be secured to said door coincidently with the opening therein, substangiallly as and for the purpose hereinbefore set ort 1.

Apparatus for developing photographic roll films in daylight, comprising a cylindrical casing having an opening in the side thereof, a reel spindle in the container having a wire loop and hooks, an opaque apron adapted to be passed through the aforesaid opening and having hooks for engaging'with the hooks on the reel spindle, a door hinged to the container and having an opening, a spool-box secured to the with the opening therein, and pivots in the spool box for a film spool, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
7. Apparatus for developing photographic roll films in daylight, comprising a cylindrical casing having an opening in the side thereof, areel spindle in the container havi ug a spring clip and hooks, an opaque apron adapted to be passed through the aforesaid opening and having hooks for engaging the hooks on the reel spindle, milled heads on said reel spindle, one of said heads having a polygonal portion, a brake spring pressing set forth.
