To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WALwoRTI-I BELL, a citizen of t 1e United States, and resident of New York city, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket Dating and Delivering rlrpparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means for dating policies of insurance, tickets, and the like, and delivering themfrom the apparatus successively at each operation thereof, and I have shown means whereby the apparatus may be operated to date and deliver a policy, ticket or the like only upon the insertion of a coin.
I have shown means for depositing a token in the coin receptacle, either upon or beneath each coin inserted, whereby to indicate the particular coin deposited by a. ]')1l10l'1LSGl' of the policy, ticket or the like.
My invention comprises the novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed. out in the claims.

As the tickets are deposited upon the time stamp from the wheel they are moved across the top of the stamp in position over its type device or wheels 1 beneath a stamping or impressing member, as follows: Upon a shaft 5, suitably 'ournaled in hearings in frame 3, is secured an arm 6 having a pin 6 entering a slot 7 in a segment 7 provided with teeth or a rack 7 which segment is suitably journaled upon a shaft or stud 8 carried by frame 8, (Fig. 3), whereby as shaft 5 is rocked the segment 7 will be rocked correspondingly. Teeth 7 of segment 7 are in mesh 8 with a gear 9 secured upon shalt 10 extend ing over stamp 4: and journaled in suitable bearings 11, part of which bearings are shown secured upon the top of stamp i and part upon frame 3, which shai t carries a spur 9 wheel 12, having sharpened teeth, adapted to engage a ticket upon the top of stamp 4i. Shaft 10 also has a gear 18 meshing with an idle gear 14 which in turn meshes with a gear 15 on a shaft 16 journaled in bearings 11 above stamp 4, which shaft 16 carries a spur wheel 12 to engage a ticket on the stamp. Gear 15 meshes with an idle gear 17 that is in mesh with a gear 18 on shaft 19 ournaled. in bearings 11 above stamp 4i, and shaft 19 carries aspur wheel 12" to engage a ticket on the stamp, the train of gearing shown being such as to cause the spur wheels 12, i2, and 12 to revolve at the same speed in the same direction.
The tickets are wheel 1 by pushed successively from a sliding plate or pusher 20 (Fig. 2) carried in suitable guides 21 on frame 3, and located slightly above the plane of the top of stamp 4 and moving parallel thereto to push out from the wheel a ticket or policy when the latter is in position just above the plane of the top surface of stamp 4. The inner edge of pusher is shown recessed at 20 to straddle the stop 1 of wheel 1 as the pusher moves toward the wheel, enabling the front edges 20 at the ends bf the pusher to straddle and pass on opposite sides of stop 1to engage the tickets. See Fig. 2. Pusher 20 is reciprocated by a suitably shaped arm 22 pivotally connected with the pusher, as at L3, and pivotally supported at 24 upon a bracket 3" of frame 3. Arm 22 is pivotally connected, as at 25, with a sliding bar 26 that is mounted to slide in suitable bearings 27 on frame 3. Bar 26 is reciproeated from shaft 5 by an arm 28 (Fig. 3), secured on shaft 5 and having a pin 23 entering a fork or slot 29 provided on bar 26. The shape of part 7 of slot 7 of segment 7, as shown in Fig. 3, is such as to enable arm 6 of shaft 5 to have partial independent movement in an upward direction without moving segment 7 while arm 23 is moving slide bar 26 to cause pusher 20 to push a ticket from wheel 1 far enough forwardly under spur wheel 12 for the engagement of its teeth with the ticket while said spur wheel remains stationary. Thereupon pin 6 of arm 6 will engage the outwardly extending face 7 of segment 7 and cause the latter to move to the left in Fig. 3, thereby through rack 7 gear 9 and the train of gears operated thereby causing wheels 12, 12 and 12 to rotate to push the ticket in printing position over type 4 of stamp 4, and thereupon pin 6 will pass freely over the edge 7 of slot 7 into the space or pocket 7 of said slot without at such time further moving segment 7, whereupon the wheels 12, 12 and 12 wlll come to rest temporarily during printing of the ticket, and as soon as the ticket is printed pin 6' will engage the face 7 of slot 7" to continue the forward movement of segment 7 to cause the wheels 12, 12 and 12 to again rotate and push the ticket away from over the stamp for delivering the ticket, shaft 5 now coming to rest by means of any suitable stop that may be engaged by handle 5" of the shaft, or by other suitable stopping means.
During the time that pin 6 passes edge 7 and is passing freely through space or ticket 7 0 of slot 7 the stamping or printing of the ticket is accomplished as follows: At 30 is a pin carried by segment 7, and which may be adjusted in a slot 7 g therein, which pin is adapted to engage an arm 31 that is secured on a shaft 32 journaled in suitable bearings 33 on frame 3, and adapted to raise and trip a hammer 34 that is suitably pivoted to rock, as upon a pivot 35 carried by a bracket 36 supported by frame 3. Hammer 34 has a rigid finger 34 adapted to be raised by a spring-pressed dog 37 pivotally connected with arm 31, being shown journaled upon a pin 33 carried by said arm and adapted to rest against finger or stop 39 rigidly connected with arm 31. The weight 34 of hammer arm 34 is adapted to engage a spring-acting plunger 40 carried in a guide 41 on a bracket 42 supported by frame 3, which plunger at its lower end 40" overliesthe type of stamp 4 in position to press the tickets that are pushed over the type to cause the tickets to be dated, a spring 4O normally holding the plunger retracted from the type to permit the tickets to pass under the plunger. The arrangement of parts is such that as pin 6 reaches or passes over the edge 7, pin 30 will have engaged arm 31 and raised it to cause dog 37 through finger 34 to have raised the ham nier, and as pin 6 then does not push segment 7 the Wheels 12, 12 and 12 come to rest with the ticket over the type of stamp 4, and dog 37 will thereupon have passed from under finger 34 and the hammer drops upon plunger 40 to cause the latter to push the ticket upon the type of the stamp for dating the ticket, spring 4O thereupon immediately raising the plunger and the hammer to release the ticket from the plunger. The continued'motion of pin 6 will then cause segment 7 to again move to cause the ticket to be delivered from the stamp as before explained. Upon the return stroke of pin 6 engaging face 7 h of slot 7 the segment 7 will be moved correspondingly back to normal position, shown in Fig. 3, pin 30 meanwhile moving back and allowing a pin 30 carried by segment 7 on the side of arm 31 opposite pin 30 to cause said arm to move back to normal position, and dog 37 will pass under finger 34 Each time a ticket is delivered from wheel or drum 1, the latter is moved forwardly a step to bring another ticket in position to be pushed over stamp 4, and for this purpose I have shown the following arrangement: Upon the periphery of wheel 1 are teeth 43 in mesh with a pinion 44 (Fig. 2), shown mounted to slide on shaft 45 supported. in bearings 46 on frame 3, pinion 44 being con nected with said shaft by a spline and feather, a ratchet 48 being secured on shaft 45. A lever 49 having a hub 49 journaled on shaft 45 and provided with a spring pressed dog 50 is adapted to operate said ratchet. A rock arm 51 pivotally supported on bracket 27 is movably connected at one end with lever 49 and at the opposite end arm 51 has a pin 52 extending beneath slide bar 26 and adapted to be engaged by a projection 26'" thereon, whereby each time that bar 26 is reciprocated, the ratchet 48 and gear 44 will be rotated one step to cause wheel 1 to be correspondingly rotated to present a new ticket in line to be pushed over the time stamp, the time of movement of wheel 1 being just after pusher 20 moves back out of said wheel. In order that the apparatus may be operated to date and deliver the ticket, policy or the like only upon the insertion of a coin, and also to provide means for determining which coin was inserted for a given ticket, policy or the like, I provide means as follows: Upon shaft 5 is secured a ratchet wheel 60 adapted to be engaged by a dog 61 pivotally supported. by a pin 62 on a bracket 63 on frame 3. Said dog has an arm 61 adapted to be engaged by pins 64, 64, carried by ratchet 60, and said dog is also provided with a projection 61 adapted to engage recesscs 65, 65, in a spring stop 65 secured on frame whereby, with the parts shown in Figs. 6 and 8, dog 61 will prevent reverse 1 lnotion of ratchet 60, and when said ratchet is moved in the direction of the arrows in said figures and pin 64 engages arm 61 deg 61 will be moved free from the ratchet and its projection 61 will enter recess 65 and the dog will thus be held out of engagement with the ratchet to permit return motion thereof, and when pin 64 next engages arm. 61 the dog will be moved back to the normal position shown in Figs. 6 and 9.

To prevent initial rotation of shaft 5 in the absence of a coin, ratchet 60 is provided with a pin 67 normally lying adjacent a shoulder 68 on a lever 68 that is pivotally supported, as at 69, on frame 3, one end of said lever being normally drawn downward by a weight 70, although a spring may be used for this purpose. The opposite end of saidv lever is provided with a suitable shoulder 68 normally raised from but adapted to engage a pin 71 carried by a slide 72 adapted for co-action with a coin, whereby with the parts in the normal positions shown in Fig. 8, if a person starts to rotate shaft 5 in the direction. of the arrow in said figure the pin 67 will engage shoulder 68 and the shoulder 68 will then engage pin 71 and prevent further depression of lever 68, and consequently stop rotation of shaft 5. When. slide 72 can be moved forwardly by means of an interposed coin, pin 71 will be moved sulllciently to enable lever 68 to descend by reason of the sliding of pin 67 over shoulder 68 to permit shaft 5 to be rotated. Slide 72 is guided in suitable bearings 73, which may be formed between plates held together by screws 74*, and slide 72 has a slot or recess 7 2" alined with a correspond ing slot 74 in a plate 74, screwed upon guide plates 73, with which plate 74. a coin chute 75 is connected and alined, whereby the coin from said chute may be delivered on edge in the slot or recess 72 and rest upon the guide plate 72 Slot or recess 72 is open at one end to receive a pusher or tenon 76 extending from a slide 77 guided in suitable bearings 7 8 on frame 3, and the extreme end 76 of pusher 76 is ada )ted to engage the edge of the coin that is located in slot or recess 72 to cause said coin to push slide 72. Independent movement is provided between slides 72 and 77, and yet slide 77 is adapted to pull slide 72 back to the normal position after the slides have been projected forwardly by and with the coin. For this purpose l have provided a pin and slot connection between slides 72 and 77, wherein I have shown slide 72 provided with slots 72 (Figs. i and 8) receiving a pin 79 projecting sidewise from pusher 76, whereby as the latter moves to the right in Fig. 8 its motion will be unimpeded by the pin and slot, and yet when slide 77 moves to the left the pin and slot connection will cause slide 72 to be drawn back by and with slide 77. Slide 77 has a vertically disposed channel 77 receiving a pin 80 projecting from ratchet 60, whereby as ratchet 60 rotates slide 77 may be moved back and forth. When ratchet 60 is at rest in the normal position shown in Fig. 8, pin 80 will have drawn slide 77 back and pin 7 9 will have correspondingly drawn slide 72 so that slot or recess 72 will be alined with chute 75 and edge 76 of pusher 76 will be at one side of the adjacent lower edge of chute 75, as indicated in Figs. 7 and 8. When a coin passes through chute 75 into slot or recess 7 2 and ratchet 60 is caused to rotate in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 8, the initial movement permitted between pin 67 and shoulder 68'" causes edge 76 of pusher 76 to engage the coin, and through the medium of the coin pressing against the face 72 of slide 72 causes the latter to move to the right, and thereby pin 7]. is moved away from shoulder 68 so that lever 68 can be pressed downwardly by the engagement of pin 67 therewith to permit the required rotation of ratchet 60. The movement of pin 80 in channel 77 causes slides 77 and 72 to move to the right in Fig. 8 until the coin is brought over the lower part 75 of chute 75 where the coin is held suspended by the frictional engagement of parts 72 and 76 with the coin, and pin 80 may continue to rotate upwardly out of channel 77 to the complete required rotation of ratchet 60. When the rotation of ratchet 60 is reversed and its pin 80 enters channel 77 the slide 77 will be drawn back, thereby releasing the coin which will drop into the chute part 75 and the continued movement of pin 80 will then draw back slide 77,
and pin 79 will draw back slide 72 to the normal position shown in Fig. 8. Thus, for each insertion of a coin the apparatus may be operated once.
In order to indicate which coin has been in serted to operate the apparatus I provide the following: Slide 72 is provided with an upright 72 carrying a plate 7 2 having an opening 72 adapted to receive tokens or disks flatwise through a chute 81 in which said tokens are stacked. Plate 7 2 slides over a table or rest 82, alined with chute 81, upon which the bottom token of the stack rests when entered in opening 7 2 of plate 72, and said plate is held down and guided by a cap piece 83 held upon the block 84 by screws 85, which block (Fig. 9) is held upon the guides 73 by screws 86, plate 7 6 being guided in a way 87 in block 8 1, as shown in Fig. 9. Block 84, at the right hand side of chute 81 in Fig. 8, is provided with a downwardly tapering channel 84" over which the opening 72 of plate 7 2 is adapted to pass, one side of said channel near the top having a shoulder or ledge 84" (Fig. 9) upon which one edge of the coin rests when brought over the channel 84 whereby the coin on the opposite edge is tilted downwardly to slide in a substantially vertical edgewise direction through the continuation 84 of channel 84, said continuation 84 opening into the channel part 75, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. Slide 72 has a vertical slot or opening 7 2 in its forward end beneath the opening 7 2 so that when slide 72 is pushed forwardly by a coin and plate 7 2 correspondingly moves the lowermost token that is located in opening 72" over the channel 84: (the remainder of the tokens then resting upon and being held up by the main art of plate 72 slot 7 2 will simultaneous y be brought into alinement between channels 84: and 84, and the token that then drops out of opening 7 2 and slides through 8 1 will then slide through slot 72 into channel 84 and thence into chute part 7 5 The arrangement is such that a token will fall from opening 7 2" into chute 75 before the corresponding coin is released from slide 72, so that the coin will drop upon the token, and so on successively, so that the token, which may have a number or symbol corresponding to the number or symbol on the ticket, policy, or the like being delivered, will be the token beneath the coin that was inserted to purchase such ticket, policy or the like, and thereby the coin that was placed in the apparatus can be distinguished as the coin inserted for a particular ticket, policy or the like delivered.
The complete operation may be described as follows: The parts being in the normal positions shown in the drawings and chute 81 supplied with a stack of tokens, the lower most token resting in opening 72 in its position shown in Fig. 8, and a coin being inserted through the slot 75 of chute 75, the coin will travel down the chute and rest in the slot or recess 7 2 Handle 5 being now turned to move ratchet in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 8, pin 80 will cause slide 77 to move to the right in said figure until edge 7 6 of pusher 76 engages the coin, whereupon slide 72 will be moved and pin 71 will likewise move to permit lever 68 to descend to permit the full required rotation of shaft 5 and ratchet 60, the token being pushed over and delivered into chute 8 1 and passing thence down into a suitable receptacle to rest fiatwise therein, and at or near the termination of the rotation of ratchet 60 its pin 6 1' will engage arm 61 a of dog 61 and release the latter from ratchet 60, causing projection 61 to enter recess to hold the dog in such position, the coin meantime being held suspended by the 'frictional engagement of the parts 7 6 and 72 as before explained. As ratchet 60 starts to move in the direction explained, pin 6 of arm 6 slides through the upwardly extending part 7 of slot 7 until it engages the face 7, and during such movement pin 28 of arm 28 causes slide 26 to operate pusher or plunger 20 to push the ticket, policy or the like from wheel 1 into engagement with spur wheel 12 and thereupon pin 6 bearing upon face 7 of segment 7 causes the latter to move to the left in Fig. 3, and thereby, through the train of gearing described before, the spur wheels 12, 12 and 12 are rotated, and said wheels carry the ticket, policy or the like into position over the type of the time stamp; thereupon as pin 6 reaches the edge 7 and is about to move off said edge the pin 30 will have caused arm 31 to move sufficiently to cause its dog 37 to have raised finger 3 1 and the hammer 34, and thereupon dog 37 will pass from under finger 34 and permit the hammer to drop upon plunger 40 to press the ticket, policy or the like upon the type, during which period spur wheels 12, 12 and 12 will have come to rest because segment 7 is not at that time operated by pin 6 As soon as pin 6* next engages face 7 f of segment 7, said segment will have moved farther to the left causing spur wheels 12 and 12 to continue to move the ticket over the time stamp and deliver it therefrom, and at the termination of such action all the parts will have come to rest by reason of handle 5 engaging any suitable stop. When handle 5 is next moved reversely pin 6 will engage the edge 7 of slot 7 of segment 7 and return the latter to its normal position, dog 37 slipping under linger 3 1, and pin 80 operating in channel 77 C to draw back slide 77, which upon its initial movement releases the coin which immediately drops into chute 75, pin 79 drawing back slide 72, and pin 28 drawing back slide 26 to withdraw pusher or plunger 20 from wheel 1, and thereupon after pusher or plunger 20 is withdrawn from wheel 1 the projection 26" of slide 26 will operate arm 51 which, through lever 49, ratchet 48, and pinion 44 will cause wheel 1 to move forwardly one step to bring its next ticket, policy, or the like into position to be pushed over stamp 4; and at the completion of the return motion of ratchet 60 its pin 64, by engaging arm 61 will raise dog 61 back into engagement with the ratchet to be held by projection 61 in recess 65f of spring 65, the parts then all being in position for operation again upon the insertion of another coin. Until a coin is inserted the shoulders 68 and 68 in conjunction with the pins 67 and 71 prevent operation of the apparatus.
Having now described my invention what I claim is:
1. The combination of a wheel provided with means for individually holding tickets in radial position extending in succession around the axis of the wheel, means to date the tickets, means to deliver the tickets from the wheel to the dating means, means to operate said wheel step by step for successive delivery of the tickets, and means to move the tickets across'the dating means to permit the tickets to be dated.
2. The combination of a wheel provided with means to individually hold tickets in radial position extending in succession around the axis of the wheel, a dating stamp, means to operate the wheel step by step, means to deliver tickets in succession from the wheel for each forward step thereof,
means to move the tickets from the wheel in line with the type of the dating stamp, to cause the tickets to rest while being dated, and to cause the dated tickets to be discharged from the stamp.
3. The combination of a wheel provided with means to individually hold tickets on edge substantially radially with respect to the wheel in succession flatwise around the axis of the wheel, means to rotate the wheel step by step, a pusher to deliver tickets successively from the wheel, means to operate said pusher successively after forward steps of the wheel, a dating stamp to receive the tickets from the wheel, and means to move the tickets across the stamp for dating and for delivering the dated tickets from the stamp.
4. The combination of a wheel provided with means to individually hold tickets, means to rotate the wheel step by step, a pusher for the tickets, means to operate the pusher after each step forward of the wheel, a dating stamp, means to impress tickets upon the same, wheels to move the tickets over the stamp, and means to operate said wheels to bring the ticket in line withthe type of the stamp, to then cause the ticket to come to rest and to operate the stamping means, and then to discharge the stamped tickets from the stamping means.
5. The combination of a wheel provided with means to hold tickets, a dating stamp, means to impress tickets upon the type of the stamp, a shaft, a segment, toothed wheels to move tickets across the stamp, gearing for operating said wheels and controlled by said segment, an arm connected with said shaft, a pin and slot connection between said arm and segment arranged to permit the arm to move a distance without moving the segment, to then move the segment a suitable distance, to then cause the segment to come to rest, and to then move the segment a further distance, means controlled by the segment during such movement to operate the type impressing means, a pusher to de liver tickets from the wheel to the dating stamp, means operated by said shaft on its forward stroke to operate said pusher, and means operated by said shaft on its return stroke to withdraw the pusher and then rotate the wheel a step forward.
6. The combination of a wheel having means for holding tickets, a dating stamp, a hammer for said stamp, an arm to actuate the hammer, wheels to move the ticket across the stamp, a segment, gearing interposed between said segment and said wheels for operating the latter by the former, means con nected with said segment to operate said arm, a shaft provided with an arm, a pin and. slot connection between said. arm and segment arranged to permit the arm to move a distance without operating the segment, and then move the segment a distance, and then cause the segment to come to rest and release the hammer, and then move the segment a further distance forward, and to reverse the segment on the return stroke of the shaft, an arm connected with the shaft, a ticket pusher, means interposed between said arm and the pusher arranged to operate the pusher on the forward stroke of the shaft and to return the pusher on the return stroke of the shaft, and means for moving the wheel a step forward on the return stroke of the shaft after the pusher has been witliidrawn from the wheel.
7. The combination of a wheel provided with inner and outer rims having recesses to receive tickets on ec ge, a dating stamp, wheels to move tickets over the stamp, a hammer to impress tickets on the stamp, a shaft, means operated by said shaft to cause said wheels to move a ticket partially across the stamp and bring a ticket to rest in line with the type of the stamp, means to thereupon operate the hammer to impress the type upon the ticket, means to cause the ticket to then be delivered from the stamp, a pusher, means interposed between said pusher and the shaft for pushing the ticket from the wheel to the stamp upon the initial movement of the shaft, and arranged to withdraw the pusher on the return stroke of the shaft, gearing to operate said wheel, and means operated by the return stroke of the shaft to rotate the wheel a step forward after the pusher is withdrawn from the wheel.
8. The combination of a wheel provided with means to hold tickets, a dating stamp, wheels to move tickets over the stamp, gearing connected with said wheels, a segment to operate said gearing, a hammer, means controlled by the segment to raise and trip the hammer, an arm carried by the shaft and having a pin, the segment having a slot receiving said pin, said segment having a portion in the line of movement of the pin, a face 7 at an angle to the line of movement of the pin, an edge 7 and a pocket 7 to permit independent movement of the pin, and edge 7 to be engaged by the pin for further movement of the segment, and an opposing edge 7 to be engaged by the pin to return the segment, a pusher, gearing for operating the wheel, and means controlled by the shaft for operating said pusher and gearing.
9. The combination of a wheel provided with means for receiving tickets, a pusher to enter the wheel, an arm for operating the pusher, a slide connected with the arm, a shaft provided with an arm having a pin to operate said slide, gearing to operate the wheel, and means controlled by said slide to operate said gearing.
10. The combination of a wheel provided with means for receiving tickets, a pusher to enter the wheel, an arm for operating the pusher, a slide connected with the arm, a shaft provided with an arm having a pin to operate said slide, gearing to operate the wheel, means controlled by said slide to operate said gearing comprising a ratchet and pawl, a rock arm connected with the pawl, and means controlled by said slide to operate said arm.
11. The combination of a wheel provided. with opposed recesses to individually hold tickets, means to print the tickets, means to rotate the wheel step by step, a pusher to deliver tickets from the wheel to the printing means, mechanism to o )erate the pusher for each step of the whee, and means to discharge the printed tickets from the printing means.
12. The combination of a wheel provided with inner and outer rims having recesses to individually hold tickets, means to print the tickets, means to rotate the wheel step by step, a pusher to deliver the tickets in succession from the wheel to the printing means, mechanism to rotate the wheel step by step and operate the pusher accordingly, and means to discharge the tickets from the printing means.
