, Specification of Letters Patent.
."Fatented July 6, 1909.
Application filed August 11 1908. Serial No. 447,950.
To all whom it m y concerm. V
Be i known that I, EMILE-BERLINER, a citizen .of "the United States,- residing at Washington, inthe District of Columbia, have invented certain new, and useful Improvements in Joints,of-which'the following 1s a descriptio'n reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
- My invention relates to an improvement in joints for the parts offraming and especially for cross cylindrical braces.
My invention has been especially designed for use in connectionwith flying machines. The framework of such machines must of necessity, be very light, but of great strength. The material best adapted therefor for strength and lightness, is bamboo, which comes in long cylindrical stri s. By reason of their shape, it i s very difiicult to rigidlysecure these strips together at the places where they mustcross and the object of my invention is to provide a means for securing such pieces together attheir crossing, although it will be understood thatthe invention is applicable to, other material than ba1nboo.-
The invention therefore, consists in the matters hereinafter described andireferred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated i'n thc accompanying ,drawmgs in which Figure 1 is a side view illustrating the first step in the operation of forming the joint Fig. -2is a similar view illustrating the seeond step; and- Fig; 3 is a view illustrating 1 tubes atLtheir point of crossing, a bolt, 41 or.
the third step;
In these drawings, A represents two bamboo strips which are to be united at their point of crossing. I first passthrough the naiLo'r screw'to temporarily hold them in proper position, although. it will be understood that said step is not. absolutely essensfitial. I then apply in a semi plastic condition around the joint in suflicient, quantity, a mixture ofshellac or other resinous substance, with a filler of oxid of iron or another oxid such as bariumoxid or baryta,
sulfate of lead or zinc, or similar mineral substances, and a. fibrous material, such as Wool or cotton flock. The shellac or other resinous substance, acts as a binder, the mineral substance as a filler, and the wool or cotton flock, as a fibrous 'strengthener. The mixture is formed in substantially the proportion of 5%, 10 and 1, respectively, of
resmous substance, filler and fibrous substance by weight. Such a mixture is soft when heated and very toughfland hard when cold. A wad of this mixture is softened by heat and placed around the joint as shown in band pressed into place filling all the interstices in the material. Before it is cool and therefore hard, tape or cord or other suitable binding material, as shown at c, is tightly wound around it and the bamboo, to
press and hold the substance in place, and I when cooled, the mixture becomes .very. I
hard, and an absolutely secure and rigid joint is formed.
While I have described the use of the tape or cord, it will beunderstood that this may be dispensed with, although it aids in forcing the semi-plastic mass intothe interstices of the wood, and also acts as a cover to prevcnt breaking of the mixture, whichbecoines somewhatbrittle, when cool.
Having thus articular-1y described my invention, What claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A joint for cross bars, including a securing material of a resinous compound pressed around the joint; 1
2. A joint for cross bars including a se curing material, consisting of a resinous sub-- stance and a fibrous substance pressed around the joint.
3. A joint for crossbars including a securing material consisting of a resinous sub stance and a mineral substance pressed around the joint.
.4. A joint for. cross bars, including a securing material com osed of a resinous compound containing a Her, and a fiber pressed around the joint and a binding cord or tape encircling the same.
5. A joint comprising the cross bars, a se- 0 mixture surrounding the same, coniwhen cool, and finally binding the joint with pose ofshellac, oxidofiron, and flock pressed ta e or the like. V nto shape around the joint. in testimony whereof I afilx my signature, 6. The rocess of uniting cre'ss bars, conin presence of two witnesses. 5 sisting in t holding them in position, then EMILE BERLINER. surrounding the joint with a warm semi- Witnesses:
plastic mixture of suitable material, sub-. A. M. PARKINS, stantially as described, which becomes hard] C. L. STURTEVANT.
