Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WARREN H. BEBOUT, citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Washers, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a device for cleaning, washing and drying surfaces of any character and is more oarticularly adapted for use in connection with glass or other trans arent partitions.

A further ol iject of the invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of the several partsdesigned to form a portable washer comprising essentially a reservoir and suitably located clamps secured thereto for attaching brushes and cloths, etc., and means for distributing the cleansing medium either directly or indirectly upon the surface of the article being washed.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the washer; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view; Fig. 3 a rear view; Fig. 4 a longitudinal sectional view of the distributing chamber. Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view through the regulating valve, and Fig. 6 is a detailed sectional view through the reservoir and feeding chamber connected to the same.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a reservoir composed of any desired material, preferably cylindrical in formation, and designed to contain water or other liquid cleaning medium.

The numeral 2 designates a handle socket secured to the reservoir 1 and adapted to receive and retain the end of the handle 3 by means of a set screw 4. Ordinarily the handie is secured directly Within the socket 2, but in some instances it is preferable to cmploy an elbow 5, one end of which is secured within "the socket, and the handle adapted to fit within the other end and be secured by a See Fig. 2. a

As will be obvious, thesocket end of the elbow should be solid or provided with a core 7 to offer sufficient resistance to the setsorew 4 to be firmly held within the socket 2 ,and the use of a short handle in connection with the elbow permits of the washer .being used upon the exterior surface of window panes on upper floors of buildings by an operator located within the building.

The numeral 8 designates a cleanser dis tributing chamber secured to and extending arallel with the reservoir. The chamber 8 1s connected to the reservoir 1 by pipe 8 which is registered. with a threaded pipe 9 registering with a small opening 10 in the forward end of the pipe 8 and by means .of which the cleaning medium is introduced. The pipe 9 is intermediately positionedin the chamber 8 and communicates with the chamber 8 at its inner end by reason of its spaced relation from the outer end of the pipe 8 therethrough. A screw plug 11 designed to close the pipe 9 and opening 10 is provided at one end with a reduced portion 12 adapted to fit within the opening 10, and a gasket or washer 1.2 surrounding said reduced ortion and engaged against the ipe 8 e 'ectually closes said opening 10 and forms a valve arranged to govern the flow of the cleanser from the reservoir 1 into said chamber 8.

The numeral 13 designates a series of openings in the lower extended side of the cham ber 8 forming an exit for the cleanser, and 14 designates a brush or other scrubbing agent, such as felt-or sponge detachably secured :to the extension or li 15 at the edge of the chamber 8, as by bblts 16 passing through said lip and binder of the brush to the under side of an o posing clamp member 17 se cured to an actuated by a spring bail 18 attached to the body of the reservoir. The said clamp member 17 is provided with a transverse strip 17 extending longitudinally at one side to form an abutment for the end of the brush 14, which in conjunction with bolts 16 securely holds the brush in its proper relative position to the reservoir.

19 and 20 adapted to form a clamp for the retention of a squeegee 21 as by bolts 22 passing through said clamp members and squeegee, and said clamp member 20 cooperates with a spring bail 23 to form another clam by means of which cloths 24 are retained or the purpose of properly cleaning and drying the object being washed. The said bail 23 is preferably attached to the ends of the body or cylinder forming the reservoir and consists of a spring formed of one or more convolutions of the metal at both ends, and provided with a finger-piece 25 for lifting and counteracting the force of the spring to introduce or disengage the cloth.

The numeral 26 designates an air vent located in the body of the reservoir 1, and 27 is an air valve of ordinary construction designed to admit air into the cylinder 1, and maintain the liquid cleanser within the reservoir under pressure when desired.

lVith the arrangement shown, the washer is capable of various uses and for the purpose of illustration the operation is confined to the device in use as a window washer, and is as follows :The air vent 26 is tightly closed, the plug 11 is removed from the pipe 9 and the reservoir filled with water which is introduced through the threaded pipe 9 in the chamber 8 and the opening 10 in the end of the pipe 8. The plug 11 is then replaced to close the pipe 9 and to partially close the opening 10 in the pipe 8 to regulate the flow of water therethrough. The air vent is then opened to admit air and the Water in the reservoir will enter the distributing chamber 8 through the pipe 8 and opening 10 in the desired volume, governed by the plug 1.1 and determined by the operator in turning said plug to disengage the reduced end portion 12 and washer 1.2 from the opening 10. The water thus entering the chamber 8 will be distributed over the brush through the openings 13 at the edge of the chamber and the brush moved upon the glass in the usual manner.

For various reasons, it is frequently desir able to bring the water directly in contact with the glass, and in that event the air vent is closed, air pumped into the partly filled reservoir through the valve 27, and the pressure secured within the reservoir is sufficient to cause the water to be ejected from the openings 13 with su'llicient force to clear the brush.

As shown the squeegee 21 is detachably secured to the body of the reservoir and made of any desired thickness. The clothsZ i are also detachably secured to the reservoir and are preferably changed at intervals throughout the drying and cleaning operation. For instance after the water is taken from the glass by the squeegee or rubber strip 21, a drying cloth is inserted in the clamp formed by the spring bail 23 and the glass thoroughly dried. This operation is followed by the insertion of a polishing or powder cloth which may be changed for various reasons to more perfectly clean and polish the glass.

The washer may be made in different sizes to more suitably adapt it for use in connection with large or small windows, and by the use of the long and short handle an operator is enabled to conveniently wash and clean awkwardly located windows.

Having described my invention What I claim is:

1. A device of the character described, comprising a reservoir adapted to contain water, a distributing chamber secured thereto, a threaded pipe intersecting the distributing chamber and provided with recesses and designed to form a valve seat, a threaded plug provided with a reduced end portion adapted to cooperate with said tube and fit within the valve seat to regulate communication between the reservoir and distributing chamber, and a brush secured to said distributing chamber.

2. A device of the character described comprising a reservoir adapted to contain water, a distributing chamber secured thereto and provided with a pipe intersecting said reservoir and also provided with a series of openings, a plug designed to form a valved closure for said pipe, a brush secured to said chamber and an air vent cooperating with said plug to regulate the flow of water from said chamber.

3. A device of the character described comprising a reservoir, a distributing chamber disposed in parallel on said reservoir, a pipe extended from said reservoir intermediately into said distributing chamber, a threaded pipe oppositely extended from said. distributing chamber in registration with said first pipe, a plug adapted for engagement in said threaded pipe, a washer carried by said plug adapted for engagement against a reduced extremity on said first pipe to control the flow of liquid from said reservoir to said pipes into said distributing chamber, said distributing chamber having a plurality of perforations formed in the outer face thereof and a brush detachably disposed on said reservoir adjacent said distributing chamber.

l. A device of the character described comprising a reservoir, a distributing chamber mounted in parallel on one side of said reservoir, a pipe intermediately positioned between said reservoir and said distributing chamber, a valve disposed at the end of said pipe in said distributing chamber for regulating the flow of liquid therethrough, a brush carried by the device adjacent said distributing chamber adapted to receive a liquid therefrom and a squeegee carried by said reservoir adjacent said brush for cooperation therewith.
