Description

i My@ @VZW ess es y 5%? JAMES M. TAYLOR, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES PARKER, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 92,669, lated July 13, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-LOADER.
' *Maw- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of th same.
To all whom it mag/ concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. TAYLOR, of Lexing-l ton, in the count-y of Fayette, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new Device for Loading Cartridges; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a front view;
Figure 2, a vertical central section; and in Figure 3, a like section, illustrating the operation of the machine.
This invention relates to a' device for charging cartridges, designed especially for breech-loading shotguns, where the cartridge-cases are charged several times; and
The invention consists in the arrangement of a tubular rammer in a vertical support over a platform, upon which the shell is placed, so that the powder-may be poured through the tubular rammer into the shell, (the rammer serving as a conductor.) Then the wad, placed upon the open end of the shell, is driven down by means of the rammer; then the shot poured through the rammer, and the wad driven down upon the shot, so that the cartridge is charged complete at a single operation. t
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will fully describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the base or platform of the machine, centrally above which is arranged a hollow spindle, B, so as to move freely up and down in guides or supports O, and, with a spiral or other suitable, spring,` (as seen in figs. 2 and 3,) arranged so as to hold the rammer up, and
to return it te its up position when it has been forced down.
Beneath the support O a recess, D, is formed, in which to place the cartridge-shell E on the base, A, as seen in iig. 3, so that when the rammer is forced down, it will enter the cartridge-shell. 4
To charge a cartridge-shell, place it upon the base, A, as seen in lig. 3; then, through the tubular rammer B, pour the requisite quantity of powder, and place a wad, a', into the mouth of the shell; then, with the hand or suitable instrument, strike the head of thev rammel', or in any manner force it down, as denoted in red, by which operation it carries the wad a down l ard upon the powder; then allow the rammer to return, pour in the shot through the rammer, place a second wad in the mouth of the shell, and drive it home, as before, which completes the charging ofthe cartridge. Then remove the charged shell, )lace a second, and operate as before: i
Heretofore this charging has been done by arranging, in a convenient ma11ner,vthe number of shells required to be charged, pouring the powder inte each, then, by hand, placing the wad and powder in like manner, by which operation more or less of both powder and shot are liable to be scattered and wasted, and the process is a very slow one, whereas, by my invention, there is no waste of either powder or shot, and the shells are charged with a greatly-increased facility.
Having fully described my invention,
lVhat I claim" as new and useful, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The arrangement ofthe hollow rammerB in its support C upon the base, A, the Whole constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
JAMES M. TAYLOR.
