SHUTTLE-GUIDE '10 LOOMS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,263, dated September 14, 1852.
To all wkom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE T. ROBBINS, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cloth Weaving Looms; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described in the following specification and accompanying drawings,
letters, figures, and references thereof.
In the said drawings Figure 1, represents a top view of a loom having my improvement applied to it. Fig. 2, is an elevation of the front side of the same. Fig. 3, is an end elevation of it. Fig. 4, is a vertical central and transverse section of it. Fig. 5, is a vertical central and transverse section of the guide A, B, and a part of the lay on an enlarged scale the same being made so as to exhibit more clearly the spring H, and finger I.
The nature of my invention consists in furnishing the lay of cloth weaving looms With a guide A, B, Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4t and 5, to prevent the shuttle C, Fig. 2, from being thrown out of its proper course by coming in contact with knots, broken threads or other obstruction in the warp and thus prevent innumerable accidents which occur with all kinds of cloth Weaving looms. In all kinds of looms for weaving cloth if the warp threads become snarled by knot or broken threads it is a common thing for the shuttle to be thrown out of its course and frequently it is thrown into an adjoining loom and either breaks out, the warp breaks the shuttle or does some other damage and it is not infrequent that the operative gets seriously injured by being hit with the shuttle. The said guide may be made in various ways. It may be made to consist of a flat piece A, Figs. 1, 3, at and 5, with or without the flange B, and fastened to the reed cap D, or some other part of the lay with hinges E, E, or their equivalents and be placed in front of the reed F, Figs. 1, 4 and 5, and directly over the race or course G of the shuttle C, or the flat piece A may be substituted by one or more rods or by one or more cords and the flange B, may be substituted by one or more rods or cords or by wires similar to those in the reed F, fastened at the top and left open at the bottom, so as to admit the warp threads in between them in case the shuttle presses up against the Warp, or the flange B, may have notches cut into it on the bottom edge to let the warp threads up into, or the guide A, B, may bemade on the same piece with the reed cap D; but I prefer to construct it by having a flat piece A, Fig. 5, for the top fastened to the reed cap D, with hinges E, E, Figs. 1 and 2, and so furnish it with a spring H, and finger I, Fig. 5, to hold it up when it is turned up and to hold it down when it is turned down, likewise to have a flange B, Fig. 5, so arranged that when the shuttle C, Fig. 2, is thrown up into the guide A, B, Fig. 5, the shuttle C, will either be guided back into its proper course or be pinched between the flange B, and the reed F, Fig. 5, and be so retarded as to prevent the shuttle C, Figs. 2 and 4:, from operating the protection rod J, by pressing open the binder K or K. Consequently the dog L, will come in contact with the lever M, and ship the belt from the fast pulley N, on to the loose pulley O, by moving the shipper handle P, out from the catch Q, so that the spring R, will operate the shipper S, and stop the loom, thus prevent making overshots in the cloth.
I therefore claim as my invention 1. The guide A, B, or its equivalent either with or without the flange B, in combination with cloth weaving looms, or as applied and used therewith substantially in the manner and for the purpose of guiding the shuttle as specified.
2. I claim the spring H, and finger I or their equivalent so arranged as to hold the guide A, B, in its proper place substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my signature this twenty-fourth day of July,
HORACE T. ROBBINS. Witnesses: HANNIBAL POWERS,
DANIEL T. RICHARDSON.
