The principal oject of my invention is to facilitate the thorough application of the lather to the beard preparatory to shaving.

Other objects of the invention will appear in connection with the followin descri 'tion.

Mounted upon the brush-head is a body, 6, of soft rubber, having its outer surface convexed and studded with soft rubber projections 7. i The body, 6 with its projections constitutes a beard-rubbin body having a roughened or irregular sur ace adapted for the face and rubbing the lather previously applied by the brush, 2, well into the beard,

and thereby softening the beard preparatory to shaving. lprefer to make the projections, 7, of small area in cross-section, and of such length that they are easily flexible and do not act'harshly upon the face or beard. For certain purposes of the invention, the heard-rubbing body maybe any body having a yielding, roughened or irregular surface adapted to work the lather into the beard, and to Work and render flexible the skin and muscles of the face. The rubber body, 6, is preferably formed with an 1111- dercut seat on its inner side at, 8, adapted to receive the flanged end of the brush-head, whereb -the body, 6, is detachably secured to the rush-head. The body, 6, being of soft rubber, the flange, 9, suri'ounding'the opening leading to said seat can be forced over the peripheral flange, 5, on the brushhcad in applying the body, 6, to, and removing it from, said head.

The utensil is preferably provided with a laterally projecting handle, 10, which may be of any known form, and attached to the brushhead in any known manner. I hhve shown a preferred form of detachable handle made of a single piece of wire, the respective ends of which are bent-to semicircular form,

as shown at, 11, adapted to embrace between them the inner end of the head-band, 1, which is provided with a peripheral groove, within which said ends,-11, are adapted to be seated. A hook, 12, is pivoted upon, one member of the handle, and adapted to engage the other member thereof to hold the ends, 11, in close engagement with the headband of the brush-head. The hook, 12, can .be'disengaged when desired, permitting the membeis of the handle to be sprung apart sufliciently to release the head-band from their grasp, thus permitting the removal of the handle. The respective members of the handle are formed with outward bends, 13, in a plane at right angles to the axis of the brush-head. The outer end of the handle is thus formed by the bend, 13, and by the bend, 15, and reentrant loop, 14, afford a convenient grasp for the hand in using the utensil.

In using my improved utensil, the soa is worked into a lather and laid upon the face and beard by the brush, 2, in the usual manner, after which the beard and face are rubbed with the studded body, 6, until the lather is well worked into the beard, and the beard and face become soft and suitable for shaving. Additional lather can be laid upon the face from time to time by means of the brush, 2.

The manner in which the brush-head is mounted iii the handle ermits the head to be rotated upon the hand e, if desired, to facilitate the distribution of the lather.

A lathering utensil comprising in combination a brush-head; a body of hair projecting from said brush-head; a beard-rubbing body of rubber having a roughened sur- 1 face mounted upon'said brush-head; and a handle projecting laterally from said brushhead.

2. A lathering utensil comprising in combination, a brush-head; a body of hair projecting from one end of said brush-head; a beard-rubbing body having a surface studded with flexible projections mounted upon the opposite end of said brush-head; and a laterally projecting handle.

3. A lathering'utensil comprising in combination a brush-head; a body of hair projecting from one end of said brush-head; a

beard-rubbing body of soft rubber havinga convexed surface studded with flexible projections mounted upon the opposite end of said brush-head; and a laterally projecting handle.

4. In a lathering utensil, the combination with a brush-head having a peripheral flange; of a body of hair projecting from said brush-head; and a beard-rubbing body of soft rubber having a roughened surface and provided with an undercut seat adapted to detachably receive the eripherally flanged portion of the brush-head?
