RUSSELLS. FEICHT, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA,- ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE TRIO ASrMANUFACIURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIAI DAYNAMO-ELECTRIYC MACHINE Specification of-L'etters Patent.
A.Patented June 29, 1909.
Application fued october 5, 1907. serial No. 396,039.
To all whom. it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, RUssELL S. FEroH'r, a citizen or" the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new andbnseful Improvement vin Dynamo- Electric Machines, of which the following is a specification.v p
My invention-relates to dynamo-electric machines, and it has for its object to provide means for improving the characteristics and the operation of machines of thisclass in which the winding coils are disposed in open slots provided in the core members..
Induction motors and other dynamo-electric machines are often employed in places where the demands are such as to make their operation almost continuous, and when great inconvenience and loss wouldv result vif the machines should be shut down for repairs for any considerable length of time. In such cases, it is desirable to .employ armatures havin open slots so thatinjured coils. may
vbe rep aced in a minimum time without dis- "curbing the remainder o f the winding.
According .to my present linvelitfioml provide an improved magnetizable v Wedge or strip which may be located near the top ot the slots so v'as to obtain, as nearly as possible, the Well known advantages of partially closed core slots.
Figure 1, of the accompanying drawings,
- is a sectional elevation of a portion of a dynamo-electric machine equipped in accordance with my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views on a larger scale of a coil wedge like those employed in the structure shown in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a' portion of a coil and its magnetizable strip and Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional `views taken, respectively, on lines V-V and VI- -vi of Fig. i.
well known manner and are 'held in posi--` Referring to the drawings, the machine illustrated comprises a laminated magnetizable core member 1 having slots 2, the sides ofV which lie in substantially parallel planes and provided with grooves 3 near their openings. Coils 4 are disposed in .the slots in a grooves 3 and are located nearthe ends of the slots, as shown and described 1n Patent No. 765,228, granted July 19,l 1904, to the Westinghouse Electricv & J' vManufacturing Company, as assignee of Isaac' Kaiser.
Magnetizable strips 7 are located in the topsxof the coreY slots and are bound to the straight oortions of the coils between Wedges 5 and 6 y insulating tape, and the ends oi the strips are beveled-to extend under the inner ends of the wedges. The wedges are also beveled to iit over and form splicejoints'with the extremities of the strip. By binding the magnetizable strip T to the coil, the danger of its beingdisplaced during the operation ol the machine ,is avoided `andthe greatergpart of 'the strain lis borne by the Wedges. It is necessary to insulate the strip 7 from the core as well as from the coil in order to avoid establishing Y local circuits through the core laminations and the strips which are located in adjacent slots. Since the magnetizable strips are located near the openings of the slots and are insulated from the core structure, it will be readily understood that the effect will be simi'larpto't'hat produced by partially closed slots, two 'air gaps being substituted for the single gap in the closed slot and the magnetizable strip taking the place of the tooth projections.
My invention is not restricted to any spe- 'citic class of dynamo-electric machines, and variations in the size and arrangement of parts may be effected within the scope *of 'my invention.
I claim -as my invention.: l. Ina dynamo-electric machine, the'com'- bination with a core member 'having a plurality of slots, and coils partially located in said slots, of magneti'zab'le strips insulated lfrom the coils and from the core anddisposed in the slots outside ,the coils, and iny sulating wrappings around the strips and the corresponding coils. Y,
3. In a dynamo-electric machine, the com- 'binat-ion with a lmagnetiaable core member pr'ovided with a plurality of Nslots each having substantially parallel sides,V coils partially located-in the slots, and wedges located nearthe ends of the slots for holding the coils A in position, of insulated magnetizable strips disposed near the openings in the slots and held in position by the Wedges.`
4.. In a dynamo-electric machine, the com bination with a magnetizable core member having a plurality of open slots, the side walls of each of which are substantially parallel, coils partially located in the slots and separated therefrom by an insulating wrapping, and a magnetizable strip insulated from each coil and secured to it by insulating Wrappings and located near the opening in the slots, of Wedges Which extend inwardly a short distance only from the ends of the core and are adapted to hold the coils and the niagnetizable strips in position.
5. In electrical apparatus, a core having teeth Which form slots to receive coils and are provided with grooves in their sides, adjacent to their free ends, coils partially located in the slots and magnetizable strips secured to l and insulated from the coils and disposed near the openings in the slots, of relatively 'short non-magnetizable Wedges the edge-s of',
which fit into said grooves.
6. ln electrical apparatus, a core having 2,5
having beveled ends and secured'to and in- 30 sulated from the coils and located between the outer, ends of the teeth, of coil-retaining` Wedges the edges of which fit into the grooves,V and the inner ends of which are beveled to form a splice joint With the outer ends of the 35 magnetizable strips. A
ln 4testimony whereof, I Ihave hereunto subscribed my name this 30thday of Septembei', 1907.
