Be it known that I, EUGENE C. YEOMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Kalb, in the county of Dekalb and btate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealing Devices, of which the following is a specification, referdrawing.
This invention relates to improvements in sealing devices adapted to be used for sealing cars, express trunks or other articles, so as to prevent any unauthorized opening of such articles without rupturing the seal.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and secure device of this character, and I accomplish this object by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing and hereinafter particularly described.
That which I believe to set forth in the claim.
In the drawing,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved seal, in locked position, the casing portion being partly broken away. Figs. 2 and 8 are details, considerably enlarged, of the end portions of my improved sealing strip. l ig. l is a longitudinal vertical section through the sealing strip and the projecting casing, the section being taken at line d l of Fig. 5, and Fig. 5 is a cross section at line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the several figures of the drawing in which corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference numerals- 6 indicates a strip of thin sheet-metal provided with a series of pairs of slits 7 and 8 cut at right angles to the side edges of the be new will be I strip whereby is left between each pair a small plate 9 of approximately rectangular shape, each of said plates being depressed so that its outer face lies slightly below the inner face of the body portion of the strip (3, the depression of the plates 9 being preferably accomplished by the same operation of the tool or die that cuts the slits 7 and 8. One of these pairs of slits and intermediate plate portions is formed a short distance from one end of the metal strip, and as many more may be provided at suitable intervals as desired. At a little distance from the opposite end of the strip, the strip is cut to produce two short tongues, 10 and 11 respectively,'the tongue 10 being the nearer to the end of the strip. Both tongues are cut so as to have their attached ends toard the adjacent end of the strip, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, but the tongue 11 is turned back over the outer face of the strip so that its free end can be brought adjacent to the free end of the tongue 10. The tongue 10 is raised above the outer surface of the strip (5 and will lie over and slightly projeet beyond the free end of the tongue 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. 12 is a small projection stamped in the strip 6 in position to be under the turned-back tongue 11 so as to insure such tongue being at all times held above the surface of the strip.

The casing is preferably formed of a single piece of metal of the required width fold-ed upon itself, as shown, so as to leave its ends open. \Vhen in place on the strip over said tongues it is to be secured against movement, and in the construction shown it is secured by heading back the strip ti as shown at 1 L so that. the turned end portion will lie against the lower face of the casing and then giving to this portion of the strip near its extreme cud another bend as shown at 15, thereby forming a hook portion 16 which is inserted in the casing and lies beneath the inner face of the strip (3.
\Vith the strip formed as described and the casing secured over the tongues 10 and 11, the device will be used for sealing purposes as follows; the strip will be passed through staples or eyes on the two parts that are to be secured together, as for example, a car-door and the car-body, and that end of the strip in which are formed the crossslits T and S and depressed plate portions 9 will be inserted into that end of the casing that is adjacent to the bend I l. The strip may be pushed into the casing to any desired extent as each depressed plate portion will of course ride over the tongue 10 whose free end is extended in the direction in which the strip is'beiug moved and it cannot be caught by the end of the reversely-turned tongue 11 as such end is beneath and protected by the end of the tongue 10, as clearly shown in the enlarged detail in Fig. 3. \Vhen, however, the strip has been inserted as far as desired, a short backward pull on the strip will cause the tongue 10 to enter one of the slits 8 which it is enabled to do by reason of the depressed plate portion 9 adjacent to such slit, such depressed portion then coming of course beneath said tongue 10.
