CAR SEAL.

INVENTOR.
, ATTONES.
UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK W. SUYDAM, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO METAL-I. LET MANU- FACTURING (30., INCL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CAR-SEAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Application filed July 14, 1919. Serial No. 310,527.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANK IV. SUYDAM, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Seals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sealing devices, and one of the objects thereof is to provide a new and improved sealing device adapted primarily for sealing doors on freight cars.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character, which is'sure and positive in operation, and which when the parts are in locking position can not be again unlocked without mutilating or destroying the seal.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of embodiment of my invention,
Figure 1 illustrates a portion of the door of a freight car with my improved seal mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sealing device.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, taken through the casing of the device, showing the locking member.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3; and
F i 5 is a sectional view of the seal, showing t e parts in locked position.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views thereof, the reference numeral 1 denotes a box or casing, which is preferably formed by bending up portions of a strip of metal, and from one side of this casing extends a tongue member 2, said parts being preferably formed integrally. One end of the casing is closed, as at 3, and the opposite end is open, as at 4.
Located within the casing, and fastened therein, as for instance by soldering is a locking member 5, the same comprising a nates adjacent the front wall 10 of the casing.
The tongue 2, at its free end, is provided with a plurality of apertures 11, of such dimensions as to receive the tongues 6 of the locking member.
It will be noted that the closed end 3 of the casing is so disposed with respect to the end of the tongue, that. when the latter is in locked relation with the fingers 6, that if the tongue were pushed farther inward, the end thereof would engage with the wall 3 before it would move far enough to disengage the tongues 6 from the apertures 11. It is therefore seen that the tongue can not be disengaged when once locked if moved in either direction.
In the use of my device, which should be largely obvious from the above description, taken in connection with the drawing, it will be merely necessary to pass the tongue of the vice through the staple 12, which receives the hasp 13, of the car door, and then pass the free end of the tongue into the open end of the casing between the flange 9 and the front wall thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 5, so that the tongues 6 will automatically spring into the apertures 11, located in the free end of the tongue.
Inasmuch as the tongue 6 extends rear-.
. wardly toward the closed end of the casing,
it will be seen that it will thereafter be impossible to withdraw the tongue from the casing, as the parts are securely locked together. In order to remove the seal so that the car door may be unlocked, it is of course necessary to sever the tongue before such object can be accomplished.
It will accordingly be seen that I have provided a device well adapted to attain, among others, all the aims and objects above pointed out, in a simple yet efficient manner, and that the device being formed of thin sheet metal may be manufactured at a modicum of cost. 7 7
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the class described, a casing provided with a lateral'extending tongue,- the free end of which is provided with a plurality of apertures, a locking member fastened within said casing, said locking member having a plurality of outwardly extending fingers, the free ends of which engage with one of the walls of said casing, saidlocking member at its rear end having a flange which partially closes the open end of the casing, the fingers of said locking member extending rearwardly and being adapted to enter the apertures, of said tongue when the free end thereof is inserted within said casing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK \V. SUYDAM.
I \Vitnesses:
LEO M. EISENBERG, EMMA VVEINBERG.
