AIR-COMPRESSOR.
Neieesnm.
To all whom it concern:
Be it known .that ove, AJAY B. 2LAMPMAN `and Ansusr K1-rrnwnnenn, citizens ofthe .United States, both residing in thecityof New York, .county Lof Kings, and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements .in .Air Compressors, -fully described .and represented yin the .following fspeciication :and lthe accompanying v v .,drawings, forming a .part of ithefseme.

cylinder vF, and G the high pressure cylinder delivery. The lowfpressure c' .lindel-.is shown as equipped-with a suctionrt rottling device iH, -.Whichmay be of any suitableiformpbeing lillustrated as ithe wellTknown -Erie unloading device, vwhich is ycontrolled 4,from the ,high pressure delivery .or receiver through pipe 20so as to close the suctionthrottling va ve andprevent suction fluid entering-the .lowpressure cylinder, when the, pressure in the receiverrisesto the pointfor which the unloading device is set.` The highpressure c linder,.as shown iniF-ig. 2iszprovidedwith .t e well-known Cincinnati air `valve gear ,having 'the mechanically actuated suction and delivery -valves dat oppositeendsof the cylinder, .with automatic Ipuppet valves b controlling .the 4discharge .outside `the nnechanically actuated valves, 10 being the suction and 11 the delivery ipassages of the com ressor.
A the arts thusfar described may beef any suitaiile construction, vand this special tylpe of compressor and unloading device is se ected only-for pur ose ofillustration.
Referring now to t e relief device embodying the present invention, this device isexactly the same at opposite ends of the cylinder Il", so [that a single description andthe same references may bc used for bothdcvices. The discharge ort is connected iinside the puppet -valvesl to a port xl passing through the cylinder head and normally closed by a valve c. This valve c opens-the -port 1 .to a chamber 12 connected t0 the atmosphere through a port 2 controlled .bya springr pressed puppet `valve d the spring rcssurc ofl which is `preferably .made yadi mufllor, as may bc convenient.

pressure .cylinder having the `suction .B :and
the cylinder discharge )tissage to chamber .12. The space in cham er 6 outside-tl1e,pis ton 5yis connected by pipe 14 to the/intercooler D and ,chamber (i on the opposite side b of piston 5 isprovided with an opening 8 to eferring to said drawings, Ais the low l thc-l atmosphere. i
The. o eration. of the deviceis as follows z- When tlic'throttlingunloading device H lis open and the compressor lis run normally,
` reduced, and the relief valve d is used.
the pressure in intercooler D operating through the pipe 14 upon the outer side of piston 5 is suflicient to hold valve c to its seat and close the port 1 so that the valve c is not opened by the dischar e pressure of the high pressure cylinder. hen the throttling valve of unloading device H closes the suction of cylinder A, the intercooler pressure is reduced to some point below atmospheric pressure, and the pressure outside 'pis'.- ton 5 becomes less than the pressure in chamber 6 inside the piston 5, which inside pressure is that of the atmosphere on account ofthe opening 8. The piston 5 is then moved outward by the unbalanced pressure, aided by the spring 7, in the construction shown, thus opening the valve c, so that any air in the cylinder l*` Will at each movement of the'piston be forced out through port 1, chamber 12 and port 2 to the atmosphere outlet 13, the lrelief valve d being set so as to open under a light pressure. When the pressure in the receiver is reduced and the suction throttling device H operates to open the suction valve of cylinder A, the pressure in the intercooler D rises again and returns piston 5 to normal position, thus closing the valve c for the normal operation of the compressor.
It will be understood that the relief valve d may be omitted, if the valve c be arranged to close to prevent the back iiow of air into the cylinder, but preferably the valve c remains open when the intercooler pressure his T e intercooler pressure on piston 5 may be resisted by a spring and the atmosphere, as shown, or by either springs or the atmosphere alone, or springs tending to close the valve may be used to form a relief valve opening under light ressure on the disc arge stroke when t e compressor is unloaded and closing on the suction stroke to prevent back flow of air, according to the intercooler pressure conditions. lt is not essential that the intercooler pressure shall drop to atmospheric, when the compressor is unloaded, the only essential being that the difference between the intel-cooler pressure when unloaded and loaded, shall be sufiicient to operate the valve c.
If the device be applied with single stage compressors, iitted with unloading devices of the suction throttlin type, the chamber 6 outside the piston 5, Wi l be connected to the suction port inside the throttling valve, and the action is the same as above described, the proportioning of the piston and valves, and the arrangement of springs, being such as to cause the valve to remain closed when the pressure in the suction port is at or near normal pressure, and permitting the valve to open when the predetermined drop in the pressure in the suction port occurs, through closing of the suction tnrottling device.
@sensa It Will be understood that the invention is not limited to use With unloading devices of the suction throttling type, but that 1t 1s applicable, also, in connection with other types trolling the outlet valve, and means for ap.
plying inlet pressure to said pistonto normally close the valve and permit the valve t0 open when the compressor is unloaded.
2. The combination with an air or gas compressor having an unloading device by lWhich the inlet pressure is reduced when the compressor is unloaded, of an outlet valve opening to the atmosphere, a piston controlling the outlet valve, means for applying inlet ressure to said piston to normally closet e valve and permit the valve to open When the compressor is unloaded, and an automatic valve outside said outlet valve to prevent the back iloW of air into the cylinder.
3. The combination With a multi-stage air or gas compressor having an unloading device by Whlch the inlet pressure of the high pressure cylinder is reduced when the compressor is unloaded, of outlet valves on the high pressure cylinder opening to the atmosphere, and pistons operating said outlet valves and subjected to intercooler pressure to normally close said valves and permit the valves to open when the compressor is unloaded.
4. The combination with a multi-stage air or gas compressor having an unloading device by which the inlet pressure o1p the high pressure cylinder is reduced when the compressor is unloaded, of outlet valves on the high pressure cylinder opening to the atmosphere, istons operating said outlet valves and su jected to intel-cooler pressure to normally close said valves and permit the valves to o en when the compressor is unloaded, an( automatic valves outside the outlet valves to prevent the back lw oi' air into the cylinder.
5. The combination with an air or gas compressor having an unloading device by which the inlet'pressure is reducedv when the compressor is unloaded, of an outlet valve opening to the atmosphere, a piston controlling the outlet valve, and means for applying inlet ressure to one side of said piston to close sai outlet valve, said piston being subjected to pressure on the o posite side to open said outlet valve when t e compressor is unloaded.
6. The combination with a multi-stage air or gas compressor having an unloading device by which the inlet pressure of the high pressure cylinder is reduced when the cornpressor is unloaded, of outlet valves on the high pressure cylinder opening to the atmosphere, pistons operating said outlet valves, and' means for applying intereooler pressure to said pistons to close said outlet valves, said pistons being subjected to pressure on the-op osite sides to open said outlet valves whent ecom ressoris unloaded.
7. The com ination with a multi-stage air or gas compressor, of a suction throttling device on the low pressure cylinder controlled by the'receiver pressure to throttle the suotion and unload the compressor, and outlet valves on the high pressure cylinder opening to the atmosphere, pistons operating said outlet valves and actuated to close the valves by intereooler pressure and subjected to pressure on the opposite side to open said outlet valves when the Compressor is unloaded, and automaticI valves outside said outlet valves to prevent the back iowzof air into the cylinder.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
